Washing on the line *lighthearted-ish* - WWYD?

Settle a "disagreement" between H and me.

I hung some washing on the line this morning. The weather is now looking pretty dark and gloomy so whilst DD is napping I've gone out, brought it in and it's gone in the tumble dryer to finish off.

The washing includes DDs puddlesuit which she'll need for nursery tomorrow as it's due to rain.

H thinks I'm being "wasteful" using the tumble dryer - he thinks I should bring the washing in when it's raining (easier said than done with a 15 month old in tow) or bring it in tonight as "it will still dry, even in the rain HmmConfused."

  • no money issues re tumble dryer costs. ** yes I'm aware he's an arsehole. That's a separate issue.

So - the most mundane AIBU in the history of AIBU.... but AIBU?!

I do realise logic and reasoning doesn't seem to be one of OP's DP's strong points though

FlyingBurrito · 29/04/2021 15:42

@Kotatsu

Tumble dryers cost much less than you think - according to Which? A bog standard Beko condenser dryer costs 80 quid a year to run, that's doing 3 loads of cottons every week.

YANBU. Use the dryer when it's convenient - in fact, using it is going to be significantly cheaper than the labour cost of you doing it at minimum wage.

3 loads a week?

You do know that everyone on here does 3 loads a day minimum if you read the help with my laundry threds Grin

3 loads a week really is one persons amount I'd say by the time you include bedding and towels etc so not really a very realistic view of the costs

CovidSmart · 29/04/2021 15:59

His attitude is crap, no question about that.

Re the drying in the rain...
I’m drying all our washing outside, all year around and I have to say washing CAN dry when it’s raining. It does depend on how heavy the rain is, how long it lasts etc...but I’ve been known th élevas the washing to dry when it’s raining too.

PattyPan · 29/04/2021 17:11

Your DH is obviously BU but is there not a middle ground here ie an airer indoors? We don’t have a TD and still manage to dry things on rainy days by using an airer!

PinkJellycat · 29/04/2021 17:32

He's still arguing 'til he's blue in the face.

There are no money issues, we are financially comfortable. He certainly isn't frugal with money, he has spent quite a bit recently on new gear for his (many) hobbies.

I think he's just being a bully. He's certainly made this into a massive argument.

Obviously popping it on the airer would be the middle ground and maybe I should have thought of that, but I can't remember the last time I used the airer, genuinely. It usually goes in the tumble drier or if nice, out on the line Confused if I didn't have DD home, I would've waited until it rained and then probably done exactly the same.

He's smug because it didn't actually rain as badly as it looked it would. Surely that's really not the point? The washing is now folded and put away and DD has her suit for tomorrow?

Not always easy to do that quick dash with a toddler, you do right OP.

I’m in the ‘tumble dryers are evil’ camp, use it a handful of times a year. Line or inside airing for most stuff. Dryers have a hefty carbon footprint. A 2Kw machine for an hour would be the same as a 15 minute shower or leaving 250 lights switched on. Your maths may vary. Water is still wet though :)

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 30/04/2021 07:40

So the drying isn't really the point here, is it. Does he belittle/bully you a lot? Does he often start arguments over nothing? How is your relationship? Are you happy and loved?
Sad

3scape · 30/04/2021 07:45

I don't use a tumble dryer, so I would be airing things indoors, which works well in a room with a window open.

But. .. where does he get off TELLING you what to do with laundry? I'd say if he has these strong opinions on the laundry he should take over all the laundry. It seems to matter to him way too much.

mogloveseggs · 30/04/2021 07:49

I throw stuff out on the line all the time even if it says rain but wouldn't have an issue with putting it in the dryer if I needed it ready for the morning. He sounds rather overbearing op hope you're ok Flowers

Cadent · 30/04/2021 08:20

Will you keep doing his washing?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 30/04/2021 08:32

He's ridiculous.

Our tumble dryer packed in last weekend so I dried stuff on the line. DH was very quick to tell me how lovely line-dried washing is and how quickly it all got dried Hmm

I told him if he wanted his washing line dried all the time, then he was more than welcome to wash it and hang it out himself before he left for work at 7am - he soon changed his tune Grin

We live in Cumbria so it rains A LOT. I pop everything in the washer/dryer before work and come home to nice clean, dry laundry. Like fuck am I making extra work for myself and dealing with damp partially dried washing everyday!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 30/04/2021 08:38

What the fuck? If dh dared speak to me like that (or I like that to him) there would be hell to pay.

Does he often speak to you like that, creating arguments out of nothing?

Apart from him being totally incorrect that clothes won’t actually dry in the rain, rain isn’t necessarily clean and the clothes may have needed to be washed again.

What a dick

honeylulu · 30/04/2021 09:37

I don't even know where to start with this. What a cock.
No, washing will not dry in the rain.
If there is something you need dry before morning you need to find another solution - the obvious one being a tumble dryer.
The laundry was a chore you were doing so it is none of his business how it is done.
Tumble dryers are not in fact costly to run.
He called you "useless" - this is so disrespectful, insulting and rude!

My husband has a horror of tumble dryers too. He insists line drying or hanging stuff on radiators/an airer is the correct way. Guess what he is in charge of over 90% of laundry so I let him crack on. When I do the laundry I do chuck the small stuff (pants, socks, tights and t-shirts) in the dryer (it is a half size one) rather than be arsed to hang it all on the rack.

When we had our kitchen refurbed he insisted on getting rid of the old dryer that had belonged to the old owners. I agreed as it made more space and looked like a bit of a deathtrap. He insisted we didn't need a new one. I bought a half size one and set it up on a shelf in the kids TV room. It is black and just blended in with the other tech - he didn't notice it for 6 months. if he doesn't want to use it that is fine, but I want to use it and I do. However, we had a central heating leak in Feb and no radiators on for 2 weeks - he was bloody glad of the tumble dryer then. (I might have said I told you so.)

I am not sure where his obsession comes from that it is wasteful and bad for the environment. The man drives a bloody diesel car!
