Washing on the line *lighthearted-ish* - WWYD?

Settle a "disagreement" between H and me.

I hung some washing on the line this morning. The weather is now looking pretty dark and gloomy so whilst DD is napping I've gone out, brought it in and it's gone in the tumble dryer to finish off.

The washing includes DDs puddlesuit which she'll need for nursery tomorrow as it's due to rain.

H thinks I'm being "wasteful" using the tumble dryer - he thinks I should bring the washing in when it's raining (easier said than done with a 15 month old in tow) or bring it in tonight as "it will still dry, even in the rain HmmConfused."

  • no money issues re tumble dryer costs. ** yes I'm aware he's an arsehole. That's a separate issue.

So - the most mundane AIBU in the history of AIBU.... but AIBU?!

OP posts:

He sounds like a knob
Can you not afford to run the tumble dryer?

piglet81 · 29/04/2021 13:33

He sounds really unpleasant. Flowers for you OP, and I hope you can get away from him soon.

bitheby · 29/04/2021 13:35

Washing smells funny if it's been rained on and left out to dry afterwards. Much better to bring it in first.

I watch the clouds - forecasts can't be that precise surely?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 29/04/2021 13:38

Does he not understand that rain is made of water, and water is wet?

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 29/04/2021 13:40

@purpleme12

I don't go by the clouds I go by the weather forecast and what time it says it's going to rain and I bring it in a bit before that time
Lol. If I did that my washing wouldn’t be out right now. Weather app (at 6am) said it would rain this morning between 9-11 however when I checked at 8am the weather app changed to not raining all day. However it did start raining at 12 noon. Weather app says it’s raining right now but it’s blue sky with white clouds Confused

If he’s dictating the washing he can bloody do it then can’t he. Like it or (stop making unnecessary comments) lump it.

rainbowthoughts · 29/04/2021 13:41

I couldn't be arsed with someone picking me up for using the tumble dryer. What a prick.

TheWernethWife · 29/04/2021 13:45

I'd tell him to FO

BarbaraofSeville · 29/04/2021 13:46

I look at the sky, it's a lot more reliable than any weather forecast. If you get a small shower in the middle of the day, it'll just dry by the end of the day anyway. It rained a bit earlier here, but now it's passed over and likely to be good drying weather for hours.

For a puddle suit, I'd just put it on a hanger and stick it on a door handle or somewhere. I don't use the dryer unless really necessary because it ruins clothes and makes them a creased mess. And that's before the environmental disaster that is using them even in good weather. How on earth have we come to this?

Scarlettpixie · 29/04/2021 13:48

He has two choices.

  1. Leave you to do it your way.
  2. Do it himself.

Yanbu.

stackemhigh · 29/04/2021 13:51

Argh what a twat! So he's not even offering to keep an eye for rain and run to get the washing?

Stop doing his washing and leave the twat asap.

Ivy48 · 29/04/2021 13:52

I see absolutely no point in washing leaving it in the rain and then drying out again. As much as it’s only rain water it’s not the same as freshly washed. YANBU I do exactly the same but pop it on the clothes horse and I don’t have a dryer. My mothers always done the same as you. What’s wasteful is leaving it out in the rain and potently having to rewash. My neighbour leaves her washing out in all weather for days, surely you’re clothes will wear out quicker with all the wind/rain/sun and may perish easier etc. I think you’re in the right

I don't think it matters what rain is made of. He said that the washing will dry in the rain. Who is a lowly woman to argue with a man? Hmm

Any chance he could spare a few minutes of his time to run you through that so you can come back and explain it to those of us whose science credentials aren't up to working it out?

SnuggyBuggy · 29/04/2021 14:34

My OH once left his washing "to dry in the rain" for several days rather than admit to being wrong. Thankfully it was just his.

Tambora · 29/04/2021 14:35

Perhaps he'd like to go out and stand in the garden in the rain to see if he gets wet.

FizzyApricot · 29/04/2021 14:37

@AmandaHoldensLips

Leave his stuff on the line to dry in the rain. Take yours and DD's inside to tumble.
Yep do this. He can do his own laundry if he wants control over how it is done
FizzyApricot · 29/04/2021 14:38

The rain isn't exactly clean either. It contains the pollution from the air.

insomniaisaballbag · 29/04/2021 14:39

Oh I'm sorry op. He's a proper twat, there's no need for it. I hope you manage to ltb and he has to live in a place where the sun doesn't reach his clothesline but the rain comes in at the perfect angle and his clothes are forever damp. Thanks

andtheweedonkey · 29/04/2021 14:40

He seems to have volunteered to do his own laundry, OP. Well done you!

I use my TD all year round - I hate rough, itchy clothes and refuse to iron.

Next time, leave all his stuff outside and put yours/DDs in the TD or on a maid so you can bring it in without him having a hissy fit.

jazzandh · 29/04/2021 14:43

I get washing in before rain, unless I think it will be a very small shower. I use a weather radar (like netweather) and so I can see exactly when the rain will get to me (or if it is a miss).

If you are at home and play the washing game - it is a gamechanger.

Meowchickameowmeow · 29/04/2021 14:50

He does understand that rain is wet right?

Bluesheep8 · 29/04/2021 15:04

He said that the washing will dry in the rain.

Would you say that he isn't particularly bright?

bettertimesarecomingnow · 29/04/2021 15:08

Is he putting the heating on now, running a bath and leaving all the doors open and the plug out of the bath

But then I'm petty.....

Fuck that - washing gets dried by however means necessary - he can do his own. What a twat!

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 29/04/2021 15:17

Not always easy to do that quick dash with a toddler, you do right OP.

Washing on the line *lighthearted-ish* - WWYD?
Kotatsu · 29/04/2021 15:25

Tumble dryers cost much less than you think - according to Which? A bog standard Beko condenser dryer costs 80 quid a year to run, that's doing 3 loads of cottons every week.

YANBU. Use the dryer when it's convenient - in fact, using it is going to be significantly cheaper than the labour cost of you doing it at minimum wage.
