It’s a parking one!

Ok, I think I need a reality check as I’ve just been made to feel like the most unreasonable person in the world.

For background, we live in a small new build cul-de-sac, there’s a whole bank of visitor parking down the one side and then everyone has 2x parking spaces in front of their houses. Was outside bringing the bin in and a car just drove up in one of our spaces, next to our car. Woman got out and I didn’t know her so I just said ‘sorry that’s our private parking space’ and she replied ‘I’ll only be 15 minutes or so’ and carried on walking so I replied that it didn’t matter how long she was going to be, could she move please’ and she just stopped and stared at me, mumbled something and then shouted to our neighbour but one who was outside “Derek!* I’m going to have to move, SHE (point) has told me to move!!” shot me a few looks, more mumbling etc. Then she drives to the visitor bit and parks (so she knew where it was).

Funny thing is that was at 9am and she’s still here so not 15 minutes. I wouldn’t mind if people asked (no one ever does!) e.g if the visitor parking was full, but it’s the entitlement to park on what is essentially a driveway, without asking that wound me up. But now I feel like the dick.

I’ll see if I can draw a pic 😆

@UhtredRagnarson

I hate this type of parking that is down in new build estates. I had the same in my previous house which was beside a primary school. I had one car, two spaces. People would pull in and head off to collect little darling and then head to the play park Hmm if I was there I asked them to move and they would sulk. Problem was my DC went to a different primary school and sometimes I would come back to cars in both my spaces. So I parked across the back of both of them. Made them wait ages when they knocked to ask me to move.
Yes that’s the thing, I always feel like the bad guy. It’s just the audacity!

Why new build developers think it’s a good idea to put these spaces in, shared drives too, it’s just asking for trouble.

can you put something down boundary of yours and Derek's side? You need to be firm with this or Derek will soon have 3 spaces and you 1.

Weeedonkey · 29/04/2021 10:12

The planter idea is a really good one thanks 👏🏻

Penguin bollards obviously.

Womencanlift · 29/04/2021 10:14

Definitely get some heavy planters and start parking in between the two

Weeedonkey · 29/04/2021 10:14

Penguin bollards obviously.
What’s that? Goes off to Google!

Buy a big Gnome from Asda and leave it in the empty spot...

Oh yes!! Can’t believe I forgot about penguin bollards!! Grin

She should be thankful Derek has visitor parking to begin with without being a CF and parking on your drive.

My sister lives in a similar set up to you OP and parking is an absolutely nightmare. You pull into her close and it’s like a bloody car park, cars everywhere! They’ve been trying to get some guest parking added but the developers or council or whoever aren’t having it.

Weeedonkey · 29/04/2021 10:20

I want to install proper parking bollards (the ones you can lock shut) but DP doesn’t want it to look like we live at B&Q (fair point) and anyway we have a management company that doesn’t like this sort of thing 😄

I know, WHY do developers do it!? The problem with our guest parking (although there were spaces this morning) is that people with 3 cars use it as another parking space. House right next to the spaces does this! So infuriating.

Can you put up a sign saying “private/resident only parking.”?

Weeedonkey · 29/04/2021 10:24

Does anyone know the law on blocking people in? Asking for the future 😆

NoseOfJericho · 29/04/2021 10:24

You can get nicer looking bollards/posts than the basic car park ones.

However, you could try parking diagonally across your spaces, which would probably use them both up, unless you have a tiny car.

Or rent the space out on one of the parking websites, for money.

Weeedonkey · 29/04/2021 10:25

Our management company said no signs. I have spoken to them before and said this needs to be done. They are so useless to be honest.

Are they designated parking spaces? It sounds like they are just spaces outside your house.

No they’re designated it’s on the deeds of the property, thing is everyone who lives here knows this

UhtredRagnarson · 29/04/2021 10:28

Ours were designated spaces, I paid insurance for them! OP probably does too through her management company.

UhtredRagnarson · 29/04/2021 10:29

Yes mine were on the deeds too.

Yes same as you. Does your management company allow you to put signs up, ours is really fussy! No changes to spaces or exterior of property Confused (We have painted in numbers though, most people have!)
OP posts:
Mamette · 29/04/2021 10:32

You were right to move her OP, otherwise she’d keep doing it.

Wegobshite · 29/04/2021 10:35

Just park your car in the middle of the drive or slightly over so that there isn’t enough room for anyone else to park on your drive

UhtredRagnarson · 29/04/2021 10:35

Nope, no signs. I put out colourful planters that I hoped would let people know they were private spaces. But I couldn’t put them along the boundary as the access to my neighbours space would have been affected. They were very poorly laid out tbh.

BashfulClam · 29/04/2021 10:37

We used to have this at the fist we lived in. All the paces were numbered but ours was closest to the door. There were tons of visitor spaces as well. When we first moved in a neighbour was in there which meant we had to Park further over in the visitor spaces and carry out stuff further. A note sorted it. So many times I came home to another vehicle or van etc in my space. I usually blocked them in though.
