Urgent - does anyone know Hastings?

almostautumn · 28/04/2021 12:38

I know this isn't an AIBU, but I need some urgent advice so posting here for traffic. DH and I are considering putting in an offer on a lovely house in Hastings, but are unsure about schools - an important factor as I have two young DC.

Does anyone live in Hastings or know the area well - and if so can you tell me about schools, both primary and secondary?

Thank you!

What I'm saying is YOU like it and that is really all that matters!

This website was a god send when we were looking at areas to move to. Has info on catchments/ results/ OFSTED etc for last few years all in one area.

admissionsday.co.uk/

We signed up for a month which was around £5 - worth every penny (promise I’m not on commission!)

PrincessFiorimonde · 28/04/2021 13:40

Are you on Facebook? There's a FB group called 'What's going on in Hastings, Bexhill, Battle'; it's a private group but admin seems to accept pretty well anyone who asks. You could join and then ask local people for advice?

I'm sure there are other local FB groups too, but this one seems to have a fair amount of traffic.

julz35 · 28/04/2021 13:44

I live in Hastings. Have 2 in primary schools here and although they go to different schools they are both good. The secondary schools to be honest arnt that good. One of mine went to a secondary here the others go to school out of Hastings. I suppose like most towns there are good and bad bits. Everyone has their own opinions of it.

@Gladimnotcampinginthisweather

Ah, so not another Line of Duty thread.
That's what I thought it was 😂

Not getting the impression of deprivation on your reccy doesnt change the fact it is a really deprived coastal area though.

I currently live in London in what many people would consider to be a rough area, so maybe to me, Hastings doesn't seem that rough? It's all relative I suppose!

Thanks for the website @Perkyduck131, I will take a look.

The St Leonards area of Hastings is quite deprived, though it does have a certain charm.

Rattysparklebum · 28/04/2021 15:54

Parts of St Leonards are becoming gentrified, lots of creative people have moved to the area and house prices rose dramatically a few years ago.

Hastings, where even the tide is afraid to come in Grin

Thisnamewasnttaken123 · 28/04/2021 15:55

I don't know about the schools near the old town OP but just wanted to clarify the school's aren't all shite as PP said.

mamma2013 · 28/04/2021 15:56

I live here and have done for nearly 20 years now. I love it and cant see myself moving away.

Not sure on high schools yet but my kids go to a good primary and yes there are bad areas but we live in a lovely area and cant say anything bad that you wouldn't find in most towns.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/04/2021 16:13

I did a thorough look a few years ago when we relocated. We ended up in Battle, daughter finishing year 4 when we moved.
Which schools are in catchment? The info is available on the East Sussex website and the admissions team were very helpful indeed.
Secondary is tricky in Hastings. Many kids end up on the train to Robertsbridge, Bexhill and Eastbourne.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/04/2021 16:14

And I would live in old town if we hadn't had to factor in schools and parking!

BeneathYourWisdom · 28/04/2021 16:20

Very dodgy, high crime rates. I never felt safe even waiting for a bus. It was 5 years ago mind. Gangs of youths spitting on the street sort of thing.

Lots of socio-economically deprived areas.

Whammyyammy · 28/04/2021 16:28

Went to a wedding in Bexhill on sea, we stayed in a hotel on Hastings front.
It has got to be the grottiest, most run down and miserable place i have ever been to.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/04/2021 16:36

The other thing to factor in as well is the lack of job and career prospects( see deprivation). I can see our youngest dd currently 13 getting part time and summer work easily in local shops cafe etc.
But there are no large local employers

1FootInTheRave · 28/04/2021 16:43

Very disappointing thread Grin

NC26879 · 28/04/2021 16:44

So weird I actually live in Hastings (had to NC for this). I'll be honest there's a few primary schools that are good, but secondary schools are really bad. My son's primary school is excellent but I'm worried about secondary school options. The private ones are even worse. St Richards in Bexhill is supposed to be a good secondary school though.

Babykoala1 · 28/04/2021 16:56

We moved to Hastings in 2017 due to the allure of cheap housing but we moved back to London after 3 years because fuck that

Voomster953 · 28/04/2021 16:58

I only came here for Ted.

IShouldProbablyHooverMore · 28/04/2021 17:01

Check out Facebook page DFLs, OFBs ...in Hastings etc group on FB. There are some great primaries, secondaries still have a way to go. I live here, have two kids at primary - we moved here 5 yrs ago, love it. It has negatives sure, but I wouldn't live anywhere else.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/04/2021 17:05

It's very deprived, the schools are shite.
This.

Whammyyammy · 28/04/2021 17:07

Is there actually anything good about Hastings? Other than driving out of it
