Few sips of red wine when pregnant?

ShutUpAlex · 27/04/2021 13:07

Did anybody have small amounts of wine when pregnant? I know a lot of people have one small glass a week, but I have found that 3 or 4 sips of red wine in the evening makes my morning sickness just completely vanish! However, those sips added up each day (or at least until the morning sickness is gone) may add up more than what I think.

Would I be u reasonable to do this?
Did anyone else find this helped? I’ve tried sickness bands, ginger everything etc but can’t shift the nausea.

If you say you did it one time then maybe you just had a good morning..

It’s prudent to avoid alcohol in the first trimester and that makes sense of course. There’s just no evidence to say that alcohol in moderation is harmful beyond then. No evidence for good reason - it isn’t ethical to carry out research on that. However anecdotally loads of women over the years have had the odd glass here and there, they just probs won’t admit to it.

I personally had the odd glass, usually weak shandies (which I really craved!) in the second trimester. Not against having it in the third but I had terrible heartburn which made me feel sick as a dog so alcohol was the last thing on my mind!

Actually, evidence wise it is far worse to smoke (which I’m sure we all know) and gain weight excessively due to overeating (risk of gestational diabetes and subsequent foetal macrosomia which may result in complicated labour and stillbirth) Yet you don’t hear of people shouting you down for saying the phrase “eating for two” - which is a fallacy

I'm not the one contemplating drinking during pregnancy I don't need a word with myself thanks very much

My children have always been my priority even while pregnant

Agree, for apparently only doing it once how do you not know it’s gone?

Another recommendation to read expecting better, it really is a great book (the only pregnancy book I've found worth reading).

I'm currently in my second trimester too and I have a glass of wine a week and did during my first pregnancy too (unless the indigestion got the better of me). I wouldn't have any problems with a few sips a night (assuming DH would drink the rest of the bottle, I can't drink red wine that's been open for more than a few days).

I also drank (small, safe) amounts while breastfeeding. My husband even has a particularly classy pic of me feeding my son while holding a glass of prosecco.

Papadontpreachimintroubledeep · 27/04/2021 14:35

Vitamin b6 taken 3 times a day has helped my nausea so much in just a few days.
I had it terrible last time for the whole pregnancy so I'm trying everything and this seems to be working so far.
I have been prescribed prochlorperazine but it makes me drowsy and I've got to be able able drive so I cant even take it.

Try to teach those perfect children of yours how to be accepting of others, ok?

@GreyhoundG1rl

Unnecessarily aggressive, Iminaglasscaseofemotion? What a way to respond to someone not even addressing you.
No it wasn't unnecessarily aggressive. I'm sure the OP feels shitty enough without a stupid response like that.
ArtfulScreamer · 27/04/2021 14:37

Our grandmothers generation were encouraged to have a bottle of stout a day for iron intake and yet our mothers generation aren't all suffering with FAS! I'm sure you'll be fine with a couple of sips a day the risks are negligible, it's just easier for the NHS to say no alcohol as they can't measure for when a little becomes to much and FAS is the result.

saraclara · 27/04/2021 14:39

Jeeze. You do know that if drinking any alcohol at all resulted in major problems, my entire generation wouldn't exist? Drinking and smoking throughout pregnancy wasn't remotely questioned in the 50s and 60s. Despite my mum's chain-smoking and enjoyment of good whisky, here I am, physically and mentally whole.

Now I'm not suggesting for a moment that we go back to those days, and if I was pregnant I'd be very cautious. But the hysteria that's around if someone so much as has a sip from their partner's glass is absolutely unfounded. I had a very occasional glass of wine with meals that really called for one when I was pregnant. I don't see a problem at all with a few sips in your situation.

Well because she's living with it the rest of the time.

Thefaceofboe · 27/04/2021 14:40

If your sickness is that bad go to the drs instead of drinking

Ffs. Op never said her nausea was that bad, just she noticed a few sips of wine helped. I’ve had mild nausea and sickness compared a lot of women and there’s certain foods that help but it’s not bad enough to go to the doctor Confused

Oohhh bravo @tiredmum2468. Did that make you feel better?

She said it vanished due to the wine?
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/04/2021 14:42

Honestly, the absolute hysteria on here sometimes is ridiculous. Actually it's quite funny.

If something was that bad to make me drink wine whilst preg it must be pretty bad is all I’m saying.
Thefaceofboe · 27/04/2021 14:42

Also I found ginger made me worse, but when I was about 9/10 weeks I lived off the caramel snack a jacks, they were the only thing I could face eating. Eating one first thing on a morning seemed to help cos I always felt worse with an empty stomach

Divineswirls · 27/04/2021 14:43

Its fine

Thefaceofboe · 27/04/2021 14:43

@PinkCookie11 she’s had a few sips, stop being dramatic.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/04/2021 14:43

@PinkCookie11 your post makes no sense. How does she know what's not gone?

ArnoldBoo · 27/04/2021 14:44

Hello, I had my babies in France where my doctor advised me not to have more than one glass of wine each day. I didn't do that because I was so bloody sick, but I saw some other pregnant women doing it. Occassional sips are fine.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/04/2021 14:45

People have a glass of wine while pregnant for no real reason. There has never been any proof that it has any ill effect on the baby.

Yep very true but I’m one of them that just couldn’t do it tbh.
