Few sips of red wine when pregnant?

ShutUpAlex · 27/04/2021 13:07

Did anybody have small amounts of wine when pregnant? I know a lot of people have one small glass a week, but I have found that 3 or 4 sips of red wine in the evening makes my morning sickness just completely vanish! However, those sips added up each day (or at least until the morning sickness is gone) may add up more than what I think.

Would I be u reasonable to do this?
Did anyone else find this helped? I’ve tried sickness bands, ginger everything etc but can’t shift the nausea.

Do whatever you need to do! (Within reason of course). Most women I know I had the odd drink through pregnancy. I treated myself to one glass of red wine at the weekend. A few sips will be fine.

When I had my children 30 years ago we weren't ever told that we shouldn't drink alcohol in pregnancy. I have only ever been a social drinker and so continued with the odd glass of wine throughout all my pregnancies and none of my children seem to have suffered as a result. In the 80s we didn't have these pregnancy tests you could take the day your period was due so we often didn't find out until we were several weeks pregnant. My first child wasn't planned so I wouldn't have been abstaining from alcohol on the off-chance.

I understand about fetal alcohol syndrome but I've never really understood why it is now considered so bad to have any alcohol at all during pregnancy. Presumably a lot of babies are actually conceived as a result of too much alcohol!

AliceMcK · 27/04/2021 13:54

I was the opposite, the smell of alcohol made mine worse. I personally didn’t drink at all but that was me.

My Dr told me when I found out I was pregnant to cut alcohol down, not totally out if I didn’t want to. He even said only have 1 or 2 glasses a night... I know I could t believe it either.

If it helps and it’s only a few sips I don’t see the harm. Lots of women drinks lots of alcohol while pregnant when they don’t know they are. I was out partying ever day for a week before I found out. I had a test which was negative, I then had a full on week of parties, leaving lunches, work events and consumed so much alcohol. At the end of the week something didn’t feel right and I felt sick when pouring the dregs of my DHs beer out, I had another test, this time it was positive. My GP, midwife and obstetrician all reassured me the baby was fine and it’s very common for women to drink without realising they are pregnant.

Couchbettato · 27/04/2021 13:57

If you haven't already, ask your doctor about anti emetics.

Even when I was suffering from really bad nausea they helped because it was debilitating and within 20 mins I'd feel like a normal person again.

They were pretty reluctant to give me them until I insisted.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 27/04/2021 13:58

Please ignore the hysterics OP. Of course it's fine.

WomenAndVulvas · 27/04/2021 14:00

A few sips of wine will contain about the same amount of alcohol as a portion of very ripe fruit. I have never heard anyone tell pregnant women to limit their fruit intake!

Horehound · 27/04/2021 14:01

Yeh I did in my first pregnancy but not in the first trimester. A glass every now and then won't do a thing.

I've never heard anything so ridiculous "I feel sick so I think I'll drink alcohol"

Think about that baby
If you plan on breastfeeding it would be a no as-well so if 3 months off it is making you miserable you need a word with yourself about your priorities

Honestly fuck off with that shite. It's a few sips of wine, not fucking acid. Have a word with yourself. What an over reaction.
Derbee · 27/04/2021 14:05

@ShutUpAlex

Yes possibly a coincidence, but I was going to buy one of those small bottles of wine and just have a few sips when I’m feeling sick and see if it works! After 3 months of it I’m pretty miserable.
I wouldn’t do this. It could easily get to a point where you’re drinking much more than you should because you feel it’s helping
notagainmummy · 27/04/2021 14:05

The sickness doesn't last forever. I'd just ride it out.

Rookw · 27/04/2021 14:07

I haven’t voted and I’m not one to shame mums, so I say this cautiously, but I wouldn’t be happy to have wine every day in the first trimester. Exactly the wrong time to do it.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 27/04/2021 14:08

Honestly what is all this shit about an adult intelligent woman having a lack of self control to the point where a few sips descend into a bottle a night and then roaming the streets like Paul Gascoigne looking for an off-licence? I’m sure OP is perfectly capable of managing her own intake and sticking to a safe amount!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 27/04/2021 14:09

Easily said, but I contemplated raking my own life with my last pregnancy the sickness was so bad, so.... I think a few sips of wine would be preferable.

OP is now in her second trimester.

Unnecessarily aggressive, Iminaglasscaseofemotion?
What a way to respond to someone not even addressing you.

We, of course you can have a glass of wine breastfeeding Jesus Christ people are so dramatic.

Have a read of this, notably these sections:
your milk contains the about the same percentage alcohol as your blood does after you have a drink. In other words, if you tested at the blood alcohol driving limit of 0.08%, your milk would contain about 0.08% alcohol.
This is an extremely small percent. By comparison, hard alcohol like whisky or vodka contains 20-40% alcohol, wine 12-15%, and beer 4-8%.
Imagine you were to nurse right after downing four shots of tequila.(Note I am not advocating for this, just using it as a hypothetical.)
This would meet the standard definition of “binge drinking”, or consuming 4 or more drinks in one sitting.
Even then, according to a 2014 research review, the amount of alcohol that passes to your baby is so small it is “biologically implausible” it would have any negative effects on your baby, [2]:

In their words:

“Assuming the worst possible scenario where a mother engages in binge drinking and ingests four drinks of 12 g pure alcohol and then breastfeeds her child at the time of the maximum blood alcohol concentration, the child would still not have a blood alcohol level of more than 0.005%.

It appears biologically implausible that occasional exposure to such amounts should be related to clinically meaningful effects to the nursing children. The effect of occasional alcohol consumption on milk production is small, temporary and unlikely to be of clinical relevance.” [2]

Back in the 70s expectant mothers were advised to drink Guinness and eat extra portions of liver for the iron. We turned out ok despite this.

A few sips would be fine. More than that, probably not wise. The person to ask is your midwife.

FoxgloveBee · 27/04/2021 14:14

It probably would be fine, but honestly, alcohol is a poison so I can't see how that can stop you feeling sick.

It was probably a coincidence - I'd try something else but it's up to you. It's your baby.

Goblin74 · 27/04/2021 14:14

There is no "safe" amount of alcohol while pregnant. Therefore, I wouldn't do it. Sorry op. Morning sickness is horrendous but I'd rather that than run the risk of consuming alcohol and not knowing the effect on my baby

ShutUpAlex · 27/04/2021 14:16

@haliborangemrmen I don’t have a midwife atm! I’m in limbo haha.

candycane222 · 27/04/2021 14:16

I would. Nausea is vile and it seems plausible to me that the wine might settle your insides - the French have known this since they first coined the term 'digestif'. I drank wine on and off through both pregnancies, as was unremarkable back in the olden days. My kids grew up fine.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks you will be on a one-way slope to the gutter with a few sips, you're obviously very conscientious.

Voomster953 · 27/04/2021 14:19

I had whole glasses of wine. Or even the odd beer. It really doesn’t hurt. But I can understand those who have had losses being paranoid about it.

This is the biggest load of judgmental bollocks. Have a word with yourself @tiredmum2468 Hmm
Cindersrellie · 27/04/2021 14:23

An occasional small glass of wine in pregnancy is not associated with any increased risk. So your sips are likely to be fine.

Hyppogriff · 27/04/2021 14:24

I certainly wouldn’t . Not against the odd small glass in a very rare occasion but why risk it ??
