AIBU to put my son in leggings?

DS is three. Currently has a few pairs of leggings and needs some new clothes. Wanting to buy him a few more packs of leggings. They're comfortable, easy to pull up and down for using the toilet. Both DM and DH hate his current leggings and don't think I should get anymore. He's too old for leggings apparently and they're too girly. I do mostly buy them from the 'girls' section because they are harder to come by in the 'boys' section. Yes, they are typically more colourful than a pair of plain black or blue joggers but he's three years old! So, AIBU to just but them for him anyway?

If DH objects.he can go out and buy alternatives can't he?

UhtredRagnarson · 26/04/2021 21:39

My DS is almost 12 and loves leggings. He doesn’t wear them out of the house anymore as I think he is worried he would be mocked but when he is at home it’s leggings all the time. He has worn them since he was a toddler and I stopped putting tights under his trousers (for warmth as he kept losing his socks as a baby!)

UhtredRagnarson · 26/04/2021 21:40

I buy them out of the “girls” section in Asda.

Frogartist · 26/04/2021 21:41

They weren't girly when knights wore them (under armour, but still.....). Wink

Current fashion says they are for girls. Would tracksuit bottoms be a compromise? Still easy to pull down.

Thatisnotwhatisaid · 26/04/2021 21:42

My 2.5 year old DS wears leggings almost all of the time, I didn’t realise this was an issue! I buy them from all over - H&M, Zara, M&S, Frugi, turtledove, cribstar and I love blade and rose ones. I really didn’t think this was an issue, they’re never in ‘girl sections’ either, plenty in the boy bit for that age group.

And so what if he thinks they're "girly"? Is his dad really going to tease his 3 yo child? Is he expecting the 3yo to bully his son?

Leggings are brilliant.

I bet he doesn't think that footballers are girly for wearing under leggings?

Bet he wouldn't call this chap, girly...

H&M have by the far best basic range of leggings for boys...I mean it’s not amazing but it’s 10 times better than anywhere else

They usually have black, grey, navy sets and then a bigger brightly coloured set. They come and go so I keep an eye on their website

Inthesameboatatmo · 26/04/2021 21:44

Sainsbury's do lovely boys leggings

Wtfdidwedo · 26/04/2021 21:44

It's obviously up to you how you dress him, and if your husband cares that much he can do the clothes shopping? I'd find joggers/tracksuit bottoms easier to pull up and down though, leggings are more tight fitting, so I'm not sure I necessarily agree with your reasoning.

Ha! Exactly. He does have tracksuit bottoms as well. I like to have a mix of leggings and tracksuit bottoms. Leggings, I find, are thinner and cooler for summer months. I also buy him an obligatory pair of Jeans for what I deem smarter occasions! 🤣

My 8 year old DS still wears leggings. He has a pair of black jeggings I had to buy him for school show and loves them. Why on earth wouldn't you?

00100001 · 26/04/2021 21:45

If it helps H&M sell "boys" leggings :

I'd buy him joggers or elasticated shorts, they're still comfy and easy to pull up and down.

waddleandtoddle · 26/04/2021 21:46

Nope, not at all. My DS was the same and tbh I think most boys wear leggings these days, they are just called 'skins' which you get from the sports shop. Easy to wash, light, dry quick (no thick waist band and ankle cuffs as with joggers), last ages.

SisterAgatha · 26/04/2021 21:48

Instagram is teaming with small businesses selling leggings for boys, girls, men, women, all ages all sizes, all designs. You can buy literally any material you want (my friend has Labyrinth ones I am very jealous of!)

I find it quite small minded to think of clothes in such limited terms. People can wear what they like and enjoy it. If you want to put him in them, do.

Peachesarepeach · 26/04/2021 21:48

My 6 year old wears leggings all the time - he finds them most comfortable and I think they look nicer than the baggy joggers which seem the other comfy options for boys.

I tend to buy from Etsy, they have some amazing designs in bigger sizes. He's got some great zombie nutcracker and dinosaur ones.

Porcupineintherough · 26/04/2021 21:49

Course not. Tell your dh they are "skins" or "base layers" and beloved of sporty blokes.

dopeyduck · 26/04/2021 21:51

Try Rainbows & sprinkles or Boy & Bird for some more boyish ones. Lots of designs and comfy.

Warofthebuttons · 26/04/2021 21:51

My 6 year old lives in leggings and I often buy them from the girls section, if not all the time thinking about it! Super comfy, easy to run, climb and explore in but don't look scruffy like tracksuit bottoms.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 26/04/2021 21:51

I was in Asda today and they had leggings in the boy section!
Maybe not true leggings, but definitely very very slim stretchy material. Some in a set with a matching top, some on their own.

I nearly bought some for DS4, but didn't, and now regret it.

bellsbuss · 26/04/2021 21:56

My 4 year old loves leggings , I buy his in Zara.

So are leggings.
IFionlyhadbrains · 26/04/2021 22:00

I always had the pull on bright pyjama style GAP bottoms for my DS when he was a toddler, much easier than leggings. Then warm sweatshirt lined printed joggers in the winter. I tend to go with chinos now as, the bright H&M ones.

I do see a lot of boys in leggings, but I don't like the knitted style tights ones they look really strange, on girls especially it looks like they've forgotten their skirts.

CandyLeBonBon · 26/04/2021 22:02

Current fashion says they are for girls.

Where does it say that? I've never, ever seen the words 'leggings are for girls' written anywhere. Ever.

I await enlightenment
