AIBU to put my son in leggings?

DS is three. Currently has a few pairs of leggings and needs some new clothes. Wanting to buy him a few more packs of leggings. They're comfortable, easy to pull up and down for using the toilet. Both DM and DH hate his current leggings and don't think I should get anymore. He's too old for leggings apparently and they're too girly. I do mostly buy them from the 'girls' section because they are harder to come by in the 'boys' section. Yes, they are typically more colourful than a pair of plain black or blue joggers but he's three years old! So, AIBU to just but them for him anyway?

“Get him used to trousers”? How odd.

My 7yo DS has mainly leggings but some joggers. He tends to chose the leggings.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 27/04/2021 07:18

My ds 7 loves the sports leggings , they look good on him he's got the build .I don't see the difference between those and skinny jeans?? For younger boys , next and morrisons do skinny fit joggers as well

@BeneathYourWisdom

How tight are the leggings? If loose fitting like slimline jersey trousers I don’t see an issue.

Lots of designer brands and Scandi brands make boys leggings or unisex. Plain, bright, stretchy cotton or black with a silver stripe and fake buttons, why not?

If they’re more like tights/underwear I think you need to size up or choose a different style. Lots of girls leggings are designed to go under skirts and dresses or tunics. They’d look bizarre with a T-shirt unless your son is a baby.

I love the trend for knitted stretchy leggings on crawling babies as they’re so practical, no runching or bunching or tripping babies up (especially when they practice walking or pulling up). Past the age of 2 not so much.

If your family are objecting have you tried loose fitting cotton jersey leggings in a dark colour? Or slim leg lightweight joggers or skinny summer joggers (I can hardly tell the difference)? My DD has some denim jeggings she loves, they’re basically leggings with thicker fabric and a denim print! She goes through the knees of thin leggings a lot.

Personally I don’t like patterned leggings or joggers on boys OR girls past babyhood or the young toddler stage as they resemble PJ pants. I know they’re marketed as leggings but you still get silly comments like ‘forgot to get dressed did you?’ which seems unfair to the child.

Any leggings that are getting worn or short or a bit tight I put in DD’s PJ drawer if she still likes them.

Also I think you need to style leggings differently to joggers/jeans. They good with ankle boots or wellies or high top trainers. Not so good with sandals or shoes.

Mine (girl and boy) have never had any comments about leggings being like pjs. But to be fair they wouldn't care if they did!

I think leggings are quite fashionable for boys now, part of the whole scandi thing. Boys leggings have always been sold by companies like Polarn o pyret and lindex.

Whatapalavaa · 27/04/2021 07:37

Leggings are great and look fine on both boys and girls!

reluctantbrit · 27/04/2021 07:41

The only drawback I had with leggings was when DD started being more outgoing outside, climbing, tumbling and I found that leggings ripped easily.

I put her in jeans and soft chino-style trousers and left leggings for at home. The trousers I patched up with iron-on patches if necessary, it doesn't work with a legging.

PlasticCupPolitics · 27/04/2021 07:51

My 3yr old DS wears leggings all the time, occasionally elasticated jeans or joggers, comfy & practical for all the running/climbing/jumping that he does!

We buy the majority of ours from small businesses on Instagram, if you have a look at handmade brands such as Black Bird, Rainbow & Dinosaur, JustKaty etc, you will see that a lot of boys beyond the age of 3 wear leggings!

Mine only had the pj comments if the leggings had patterns or busy prints. It upset her that people thought she wasn’t dressed!

PoP and Lindex are great for leggings, but many of their styles are designed to go under fleece trousers and/or a snowsuit (leggings don’t bunch up and all Scandinavian kids tend to wear them under snowsuits). Anything with merino wool I assume is under-layers?

Hankunamatata · 27/04/2021 09:54

Dh was like this. Ended up with leggings with pictures of tractors and dinosaurs as a compromise lol

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/04/2021 09:56

My 6yo son wears leggings all the time! I automatically hand down his elder sisters grey/navy/black ones. I'd totally buy him some funky printed ones if they weren't expensive.

DinosaurDigestive · 27/04/2021 09:57

I have bought my three year old plenty of fantastic leggings and also Harem pants from Etsy at good prices Smile he also loves different patterned rompers to wear with a top underneath. He is comfy in them and that's all that matters! My one has them in all sorts of different colours and prints

Beetlewing · 27/04/2021 10:54

Ds is 10, skinny and finds jeans too stiff and they irritate the backs of his legs (and never fit anyway) so he's often in leggings. If I size up they look like slim leg trousers anyway

totorostoes · 27/04/2021 11:05

My 4 year old lives in leggings, H&M, Lindex, Maxomorra, Raspberry Republic etc. They’re nice and comfy for him and he doesn’t struggle with buttons or drawstrings when going to the loo

BogRollBOGOF · 27/04/2021 12:11

DS(8) loves leggings, usually sports ones. He's very lean and they fit better or be it with a rather relaxed fit on the legs than tracksuit bottoms that tend to be too baggy on the waist.

He's got one patterened pair. I had them first, and he loved them and I ordered a child's pair for him too. We try not to wear them at the same time Grin

TakeMe2Insanity · 27/04/2021 12:33

I think things have changed. Leggings are viewed as thin trousers for boys. You can get then with dinosaurs and footballs on etc

FayleWatersWaters · 27/04/2021 12:35

They're not girly at all in my opinion, but in terms of pulling up/down for the loo, then joggers all the way. I put my 2 year old DD in joggers (sometimes from the boys' section) for preschool because she struggles slightly more to get leggings up and down.

swimlittlefishy · 27/04/2021 12:39

My boys always wore leggings. And tights in winter. Do people actually think they are just for girls?

emmylousings · 27/04/2021 12:49

I've noticed lots of grown men wearing them recently..as long as they aren't tooo tight around the groin, they look fine. Your DH needs to get with the trends... Just call them skins or base layers like someone else said!

mafsfan · 27/04/2021 13:48

I love boy leggings! My 4 year old DS chooses them over any type of trousers as well because they're so much more comfortable than other trousers. It's much harder to find in normal shops now he's out of the 'baby' bit. I used to get them all the time from H&M, sainsburys and Zara. Now I tend to get them made by somebody local who makes and sells kids clothes. I love them with hi top type shoes. They look so much more trendy than a next chinos and polo shirt or joggers and t shirt combo!

Plumbear2 · 27/04/2021 13:56

My son wore leggings untill he was about 6. Comfy and so practical for climbing and running about.

Lelophants · 27/04/2021 13:58

They're being ridiculous

JustMarriedBecca · 27/04/2021 14:06

My DS is rising 5 and in age 2 waisted clothes. They still fall down. He is ridiculously tall and slim. Joggers are a no go.

Leggings or Zara do long legged skinny jeans in cotton which are basically leggings in a harder wearing stretch cotton with pockets

Xiaoxiong · 27/04/2021 14:07

My sons and their entire school wear leggings, they just call them base layers. It's part of the boys' sports uniform! They also love the heattech thermal leggings I got them from uniqlo.

Like @reluctantbrit I don't let my sons wear just leggings on their own to go to the park anymore unless they're doing sport - not because I'm worried their penises will fall off, more because they are much thinner than trousers and we have had two incidents where they have gone through and torn at the knees and the backside when playing at the park. They wear jeans or joggers with reinforced knees to the park, leggings when lounging around at home.

Happycat1212 · 27/04/2021 14:08

Surprised by these comments, I’ve never seen them in the “boys” section in any shop so yes I guess they are seen as “girls” would be interested to know which shop has them in the boys section and I mean high street not online stores that make ones aimed at boys, my boys are 7 and 9 and wouldn’t wear them

notagainmummy · 27/04/2021 14:17

Jogging/sweatshirt material shorts are nice for this time of year.

Xiaoxiong · 27/04/2021 14:20

@Happycat1212 these are the ones my sons have, they love wearing them around the house. They're too thin for playing out unless you have shorts or trousers on top though.
