Do you ever pay full price?

I was walking around Tesco this afternoon getting some bits and bobs and remembered I needed some Alpro Almond milk. I didn’t get them because it’s £1.80 when I only buy it when on offer for £1. Luckily I have some UHT ones at home so I declined the opportunity to pay full price 😏

My question is, do you ever pay full price for branded items that are usually on some type of offer rotation at varying supermarkets? Same with Lenor Unstoppables washing seeds, full price they’re like £8 for a tube of them or £4 when on offer- does anyone actually ever pay that full price? Dishwasher tablets are another one that cost the earth full price.

It just baffles me why they can’t just be the offer price all the time? I realise it supposedly adds brand value and tricks you into thinking its worth the inflated price but it just annoys me now surely consumers are wise to these tactics and refuse to pay up?

For some things, I have a rough price in my head, and I'll buy whatever brand (including supermarket brand) that meets my requirements that's around or below that price.
For example Dc likes fruit yoghurts for breakfast, my top price for 4 is £1.80
I buy biscuit bars for packed lunches, and try to pay £1 or less for 6.
Random things like butter, dishwasher tablets, tinned tomatoes I will buy own brand unless others are on offer.

Other things I have a favourite brand and will stock up when on offer, but if I run out and it isn't on offer I'll buy it anyway (e.g. cat is fussy and likes particular brand of food, I am fussy about brand of peanut butter.)

Some things I see as a bit of a treat and only ever buy on offer.

Some things are never on offer but I like them and always buy them anyway.

Mainly shop Aldi, only full place on clothes if No good alternative

LouiseBelchersBunnyEars · 26/04/2021 22:33

I absolutely love the lenor unstoppables, but they’re so expensive.
I heard Aldi do a decent own version, but I’ve only got a Lidl nearby, and they don’t seem to do one.

DdraigGoch · 26/04/2021 22:35

Has anyone ever bought a DFS sofa when there WASN'T a sale on?

Larryslockdownlunch · 26/04/2021 22:41

I'd have bought the supermarket own brand or any other brand that was on offer. But no I generally don't pay for brands. My DDs like mint hot chocolate, I only buy it when it's half price £2 instead of £4

Kokosrieksts · 26/04/2021 22:42

I buy things when they are about to run out.

ChampionOfTheSun · 26/04/2021 22:46

I buy branded oat milk as I've tried all the cheaper ones and don't like them, but that's the only thing I pay full price for if it isn't on offer.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/04/2021 22:55

There are certain things where they've obviously got consumers so expectant of a particular price. Kettle chips £1 a bag is the biggie in our house. The stupid thing is, I understand that prices rise - I would probably pay £1.20 - £1.40 normal price. But its either £1.80-£2 "full price" or wait til they are on deal. They keep ages so when they are £1 a bag obviously I buy about 12 bags - we have the restraint to make them last so don't buy any more this way.

Bloodylovecheese · 26/04/2021 22:55

I buy more when products are on offer to get a good price but also shop at different supermarkets every once in a while so they send me discount vouchers. £10 off a £60 shop in waitrose voucher always means a tapas night and £6 off a £40 tesco voucher buys me that extra nice wine I like.
My main shop is Aldi which is always cheaper but there are some items I have to purchase elsewhere as I don't like theirs.

Southwestrunningmum · 26/04/2021 23:01

Many stores that discount regularly I refuse to pay full price, eg GAP, Boden, Phase 8

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/04/2021 23:10

I have zero brand loyalty. I just look for the cheapest brand of whatever I want to buy. If it's a favourite great. I'll stock up. If it's not a favourite it doesn't hurt to make do for a week.

Happycat1212 · 26/04/2021 23:13

Yes if I need it, for example nappies I only buy pampers so buy them at full price no if it’s something like Pringles which always goes half price every couple of weeks then I would just go without so depends what it is

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 26/04/2021 23:15

Rarely - I have several supermarkets close by, so will look on line if I need something I don't often buy.
There used to be a brilliant comparison website called "mysupermarket" or similar, that closed a year or so ago.

P999 · 26/04/2021 23:18

Its a clever move. Some pay full price, whatever. Some stock up and maybe buy more than they need cos it's on offer. So a double win

smithyca · 26/04/2021 23:28

The tactics supermarkets use to trick you into thinking you are getting a deal is shocking. When I worked in one they'd put the prices up on everything that was due to go on promo the next day to make you think you are getting a better deal than you actually are. The offers constantly switch back and forth, if Persil is on offer now you can guarantee it's going to be Ariel the next promo change. It gets quite tedious when it's the same stock every 4 weeks on offer, the best deals to be had are always on the end of line reduced to clear items but customers will very rarely get them because it's a staff perk to get first pick even though all supermarkets will tell you this never happens.

Kapalika · 26/04/2021 23:28

I don’t have major brand loyalty anymore since I tried tesco ketchup and couldn’t tell the difference to Heinz!
I’ve got a Lidl and waitrose on my doorstep. The others all deliver.

Lenor bead things are great, but I’ve never paid full price and I refuse to. Sure Tesco do their own.

However, I won’t budge from branded pesto, mayonnaise and always buy free range organic eggs.

Ohnomoreno · 26/04/2021 23:28

Buy the same stuff every week regardless.

tillyandmilly · 26/04/2021 23:39

I don't change brands - I like what I like - ie. Oatly - oat milk - £1.95 - tried other cheaper brands - yuk - not willing to sacrifice for say 30-50p difference per carton- even if on offer can't buy multiples as have no space to store more than a couple.

ZenNudist · 26/04/2021 23:39

I don't pay full price for food because they stick prices up so they can discount. I'm not very brand loyal except for cheerios and flora buttery. I try to buy supermarket own brand, I do z monthly shop at aldi to take advantage of cheap snacks for the dc and hone products.

I tend to pay full price for clothes, shoes, make up. My rule with sale stuff is only buy it if you'd pay full price. I try and get cash back and an offer if I can. I really resent paying delivery charges.

TheSmallAssassin · 26/04/2021 23:54

Have you never heard of "loss leaders"? You're not paying over the odds when things are their normal price, supermarkets will price some things at a loss to get you through the door so you spend your money with them rather then somewhere else. Trouble is for some products they pass the loss onto their suppliers, milk is often used as an example.

BashfulClam · 26/04/2021 23:58

OGX shampoo. I was about to buy it full price as I had been waiting for a deal and was dangerously close to running out. I saw a sticker on the edge of the boots shelf showing it going on half price the next day. Glad I held off, it’s also cheaper on Amazon.

RangerOnCall · 27/04/2021 00:39

I buy somethings on bulk when they are cheaper - cat food, washing tabs, dishwasher tabs etc.

I will buy whatever chocolate bars are on offer, same with other items (crisps, cereal etc).

blueshoes · 27/04/2021 00:47

There are some people, especially those that shop to a list that someone else has prepared, who will buy whatever is available and not hold out for a sale. Men are more likely to do this. My dh will buy the first thing he sees that fits the bill.

LadyWhistledownsQuill · 27/04/2021 00:47

There are certain items that have a long shelf life and always get used in this household, so I do stock up on those when on offer.

Not for the more irregular purchases though.

EverythingRuined · 27/04/2021 00:52

I bulk buy certain items that I know go on sale. Things like coffee, noodles, cleaning products and lots of other random stuff. I’ve got a store room so I’ve somewhere to put it.

I loathe the way supermarkets mess about with their prices. I prefer supermarkets that don’t do deals but unfortunately my local ones (Waitrose,Tesco and Marks) think customers enjoy having to deal, with various offers while they shop. I HATE bogof and similar offers.
