I got a letter in the post yesterday.
Addressed to :
My Neighbour
My full address

It's a copy of The Watchtower

Can they send you unsolicited mail? I suppose it's no different to them posting spam through your letterbox themselves but it just seems intrusive.

The very last letter of my postcode is a U instead of a P.
Where are they getting addresses from? Register of elections?

You don’t need permission to send post to someone.

HughGrantsHair · 25/04/2021 13:00

I've had handwritten notes from local Jehovah Witnesses during lockdown. Never considered what they were doing illegal Hmm they're sending them because they can't knock doors. No different to all the other stuff that goes straight in the bin. UKIP leaflets are unwanted in my house, they can still send them though without breaking the law

IliveonCoffee · 25/04/2021 13:00

If its your neighbours name, you neighbour may well have requested it, but put the wrong house number.

Unless you're something like "The Cottage" and they are "Manor Farm"...even then, if they selected it from a dropdown, could still still be a misclick.

Drop it round your neighbours, say looks like it was sent to yours in error.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 25/04/2021 13:00

Why would it be illegal to send you a letter?

CatsGoPurrrr · 25/04/2021 13:01

It’s addressed to your neighbour. They’ve prob just got the address wrong.
But regardless. Chill. Read it or don’t. Why the angst?

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 13:01

Ok, fair enough.
Usually though unless you sign up to a mailing list, companies generally can't contact you.
It's a bit annoying nonetheless.

OP posts:
WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 13:02

No lol, it's not addressed to my actual neighbour.
In place of my name it says 'My neighbour'.

OP posts:
HughGrantsHair · 25/04/2021 13:02

I get loads of post from people I've never signed up to a mailing list for.

Cocomarine · 25/04/2021 13:02

Sounds like you have an issue with religious material? Because surely you’ve had all manner of unsolicited items through your letterbox? Have you posted about the Farmfoods offers leaflet, or Domino’s menu?
Do you think those aren’t legal?

It’s just another firm of junk mail. Difference being I suppose that the JW’s are trying to “sell” you something that they really believe in, and really think will bring something to your life. Unlike pizza 🤣

I’m an atheist, but think it’s actually rather lovely when religious people care enough to try to bring others in. (Scientology and a few other cults aside!)

It’s a bit silly to think it should be illegal, really. If you find it intrusive, that’s coming from you, I think. Just stick it in the recycling - along with the pizza menus 🤣

Because they annoy me.

Its an incorrectly addressed letter to your neighbour.

Nothing more than an administration error. Pop it though your neighbours letterbox and don't give it another thought.

titchy · 25/04/2021 13:04

Illegal?! Lol. Don't you get campaign stuff from political parties during elections then which are addressed to you? I think you can be certain the Conservative party won't be doing anything illegal during a campaigns!

crazylikechocolate · 25/04/2021 13:05

Lots of companies do sell on personal details like addresses and phone numbers , that's where most cold calling originates

GintyMcGinty · 25/04/2021 13:05

Unless you specifically opted out political parties are legally entitled to send unsolicited addressed election materials.

Really? I get flyers and shit I suppose too. Now that I think of it, I sometimes I'll get letters from estate agents trying to offer to sell my flat. I guess it's not too different. I just find it bloody cheeky. They can fuck right off.

Fallsballs · 25/04/2021 13:05

Oh I’ve just read your update - If he sent it to you then he is being a dick.

TheQueef · 25/04/2021 13:06

They mean biblical neighbour Grin
I like the letters, they are great for starting the fire but Watchtower is that glossy shite that doesn't flame.
Never read one though.

Noooooooooooo

Instead of a name, either my name or my neighbour's name, the first line literally states 'My neighbour'!

OP posts:
ForThePurposeOfTheTape · 25/04/2021 13:07

The letter isn't addressed to her neighbour's name. "Your neighbour" is being used as an alternative to "the householder"

ForwardRanger · 25/04/2021 13:07

I think you're being a bit religious-ist

HughGrantsHair · 25/04/2021 13:07

This is why I'm glad my bins are close to my front door. Anything I don't want goes straight in there. Grin

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 13:08

Hahaha, I suppose I am!

Of course it's not illegal to send things through the mail. It's not illegal to knock on people's doors either, in case that was your next question Confused

GintyMcGinty · 25/04/2021 13:09

*Noooooooooooo

Ok in that case still all legal because "my neighbour" is not your name. I get why you are annoyed though.
