I got a letter in the post yesterday.
Addressed to :
My Neighbour
My full address

It's a copy of The Watchtower

Can they send you unsolicited mail? I suppose it's no different to them posting spam through your letterbox themselves but it just seems intrusive.

At least that way I can tell them where to shove it.

Or you could show an ounce of respect whenever someone approached you, regardless of their beliefs, and/or choose to ignore both them and their mail. Honestly, you must have a lot of free time to get this worked up about an envelope that wouldn’t take more than 5 seconds to put in the bin if you didn’t want it. I don’t get the drama.

Mumoblue · 25/04/2021 15:18

Not illegal, definitely annoying.

Just I’d just chuck it in the bin and hope they don’t try it again. We used to get witnesses around here about once a year, but I’d just say I can’t be standing at the door in case the cat gets out. My ex would just say “No thanks, we’re atheists”, but I never felt comfortable being that blunt.

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2021 15:20

I don’t see how it’s annoying either, it’s no more annoying than some junk from spec savers or where ever,

Mumoblue · 25/04/2021 15:24

@Bluntness100

I wouldn’t say it was more annoying than other junk mail, I just don’t like receiving junk mail in general. I also don’t think it’s unreasonable for myself or others not to like people trying to convert them.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/04/2021 15:26

Bluntness100, you were lucky.

I had them coming back here at least 3 times after I’d told them extremely firmly but politely that I wasn’t interested and never would be, so would they please not call again.

They once also came right into my DPs’ back garden after they failed to answer the door - ‘Oh, we heard the children (Gdcs) so we thought we’d come round.’

IMO JWs are a bloody menace, and if that’s religion-ist, frankly I don’t give a shit.
OP, I don’t blame you for being annoyed.

Wowthatsimpressive · 25/04/2021 16:42

@Bluntness100

Gosh you seem very upset for what amounts to junk Mail.
Always amused by the ‘queen bees’ of Mumsnet. Especially the endlessly predictable ones, whose names come up again and again and on almost every thread in AIBU.

Did you know you’ve passively aggressively used ‘gosh’ 397 times? Flowers

Impressive.

fakeplantsdontlookreal · 25/04/2021 16:46

JW have been sending out letters addressed to "Dear Neighbour", there was a thread on here about it a couple of weeks ago.

I just binned it like I do all junk mail.

Crankley · 25/04/2021 17:11

Don't you get piles of junk mail through your door every day? This is no different - goes into recycling bin with the rest.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/04/2021 17:22

We used to get an elderly couple pre lockdown, then when the new hall was built we got upgraded to a pack of more senior ones to invite us to the new hall. Made it clear politely that we weren’t interested. This was all ds’s fault btw. He started chatting to them when he was doing a level RE. They fixated on him, asking for him by name until one morning I cracked and said “well he’s a bit busy smoking dope in bed with his girlfriend but I’ll see.” They cleared off.

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 18:15

Not sure where you've got the idea from that I'm angered. I'm annoyed and irritated and I don't like religious zealots posting shite to me. I'm so anti-religion, I'm like the antichrist, so to have these intruding into my life uninvited by sending their propaganda through Royal Mail is just irritating. I don't want their fucking watchtower. How fucking dare they? Imagine I decide to set up some sort of propaganda piece and post it to all my neighbours? Fuck that. They shouldn't be allowed. I don't want their mail! It's not like Facebook where you can block someone. Ye, it might be harmless. But I can't block the fuckers from posting me shite. I don't like it and I don't want it. It's intrusive and irritating and fucking aggressive. How fucking dare they.

No, as I live on a first floor flat and unless it's posted through Royal Mail, they can't get to our front doors in this block. Postie can get in obviously, but the usual spammers can't.

@Cocomarine

Sounds like you have an issue with religious material? Because surely you’ve had all manner of unsolicited items through your letterbox? Have you posted about the Farmfoods offers leaflet, or Domino’s menu? Do you think those aren’t legal?

It’s just another firm of junk mail. Difference being I suppose that the JW’s are trying to “sell” you something that they really believe in, and really think will bring something to your life. Unlike pizza 🤣

I’m an atheist, but think it’s actually rather lovely when religious people care enough to try to bring others in. (Scientology and a few other cults aside!)

It’s a bit silly to think it should be illegal, really. If you find it intrusive, that’s coming from you, I think. Just stick it in the recycling - along with the pizza menus 🤣

Would you not consider the JWs a cult tho?
Captpike · 25/04/2021 23:02

I could be wrong but I don't think farmfoods promote homophobia or denying blood transfusions to children.

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 23:17

Of course they're a cult! I nearly got nabbed by them once when you eldest was a baby. It wasn't the usual suited and charming young men, but two elderly women dressed a little bit like nuns. Given that I wasn't entirely in possesion of all my marbles, I invited them in. They cooed and oooed and aaahd at my baby and I made them tea and offered them a biscuit. They vaguely mentioned a church and asked whether I needed any help. Thinking they might be social workers or something I started listing out jobs to be done lol. They then enquired as to the father of the child and when they heard that I was unmarried, off they fucked like the flames of hell were behind them. Hmmph!

OP posts:
WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 23:19

I dunno. I can block people online. I can't do that with Royal Mail. It's a minor annoyance I suppose, but moreso just a question as to whether they can just randomly post shite to whoever they want.

LemonViolet · 25/04/2021 23:20

We got a ‘dear neighbour’ handwritten letter from a JW - it was proper handwritten in fountain pen on lined A4 paper (5 sides!) - talking about how helpful God had been to her during lockdown (I wondered if maybe He’d done her shopping when she was isolating or something) and something about how her daughter was cured of a disease (fab news) and inviting us to an event somewhere. I did feel quite sorry for her because a fair amount of effort had been put in there and it went straight in the recycling.

Wtf with the lot of you putting it in the bin. RECYCLING PEOPLE!!!

When I was at uni the JWs came round and actually got stuck in spring cleaning our absolutely disgustingly filthy student house share so they could talk God at us whilst they did. Which was very nice of them.

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 23:22

I have been judged so many times by church-goers (of various faiths), that it's like it hits a raw nerve when they then spam me with garbage. I literally bristle at the thoughts of religious folk, my hackles raise and I get annoyed. Feel like spamming them with phonecalls in the middle of the night telling them I need work doing lol.

OP posts:
WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 23:25

LemonViolet snap! I might just give them a ring and tell them I'm feeling lost but that I might find God if they painted my flat.

OP posts:
PollyThePony · 25/04/2021 23:28

@LemonViolet, what do you call the receptical you put your recycling into? Would it be a recycling...bin by any chance?

WalkingDownTheStreet · 25/04/2021 23:37

Ye should all be reading it. Heathens the lot of ye. Might put manners on ye.

OP posts:
KingdomScrolls · 25/04/2021 23:42

We get regular two to four page handwritten notes about how to live correctly from both Jehovahs and Baptists, the last one DH used to light our fire. The JWs have stopped knocking though since DH engaged then in conversation for about half an hour during an early lockdown

HahaAreyouSerious · 26/04/2021 02:33

How many people do you know that have ever signed up for a visit or a letter from bloody jehovahs witnesses?

Exactly zero, so stop blaming you neighbour fgs.
If they were of jehova, they'd be too busy down Kingdom Hall and while a bit brainwashed, I think they'd remember whose house is which if they were trying to recruit you.

HahaAreyouSerious · 26/04/2021 02:36

So it turns out you did invite them in???

Sorry, but you're a total shit for blaming it on the postman, royal mail, your neighbour or anyone else.
You literally invited yourself to be put on a list fuck sake.

HahaAreyouSerious · 26/04/2021 02:37

This has got to be a shit post because you casually invite anyone in "thinking they were social workers or something"

HahaAreyouSerious · 26/04/2021 02:41

@Wowthatsimpressive

The irony of posting this, though:

"Did you know you’ve passively aggressively used ‘gosh’ 397 times? flowers

Impressive."

Do you do a control f for all the posts you read when you call out the "Queen bees"
