I know IBU posting here but I’m desperate!

I have 6 month old son. He cosleep with me and he sleeps on his side. He leaks, nearly every night and it’s a nightmare.

He is a frequent feeder throughout the night so he wees a lot. I have tried everything but he’s leaking all the time. This means I have to change his nappy, best, onesie, sleep sack and Bed sheets at stupid o’clock in the morning. He always has a break down and takes ages to go back to sleep and it’s tiring us both out.

I’ve tried different nappy brands, active nappies, nappy pants. He’s a size 3 and I’ve tried a size 4. The frills are out as The makers tell you to, the tapes touch the middle. Please give me advice on what else I can try? It’s causing a nightmare for us every night, we’re awake enough as it is!

Thank you

I think the only thing you can do is set an alarm and change his nappy before the time it normally leaks.

L41K4 · 25/04/2021 12:29

@Thatwentbadly problem is he has the same reaction. He has a break down, wakes up and it’s an hour or so before I can get home back down and it really tired him out.

Have you tried the +nappies? I would change his nappy at some point before it leaks, so when you got to bed or second wake up or whenever. You can try a wrap on the outside as well to prevent having to change everything.
You may well find in a month or so's time when he's eating more solids it might get better.

Pumpkinstace · 25/04/2021 12:31

Make sure his clothes are big enough to allow room for the nappy to expand.

If the sleepsuit is even slightly too tight it will squeeze the nappy like a sponge as it expands.

It needs to be big

Northstar1234 · 25/04/2021 12:32

Try the 3 + the plus sign is extra absorbency. Personally I always found Aldi the best for not leaking when mine were little. Failing that get a reusable nappy wrap. Little lamb have ones that you could just put around a standard nappy.

L41K4 · 25/04/2021 12:34

@Pumpkinstace they are big enough and I leave the crotch open too!

Would two nappies be crazy? I have no objections to changing him, but it upsets him so much and we’re already both so shattered that being up for ages in the middle of the night is just a total pain. A lot of my friends with similar ages babies don’t seem to have a leakage issue?

@Northstar1234 there isn’t an Aldi where I live, but the + sounds interesting - I’ll do some investigating and give it a try. Thank you

Try the next size up for their vest, we also use pyjamas instead of sleepsuits with pampers nappy pants and it solved the issue for us (my babies a couple of weeks younger )

Allwokedup · 25/04/2021 12:36

Maybe time for size up in nappy’s? When mine leak it’s because nappy’s are too small in age. I found. Aldi nappy’s really good and no leaks!

LaBellina · 25/04/2021 12:36

We had the same issue.
Our DS’s room was a bit too chilly which made him pee but that’s not an issue if you’re cosleeping. Have you tried special nappies for overnight use? We use them and they’re great.

PinkCookie11 · 25/04/2021 12:48
  • size nappies!
NicFairy · 25/04/2021 13:04

Have had the same problem with my babies, especially the ones who had quite big tummies, tabs never stretch far enough around and would always get side leaks at night. Go up a size or two and use the + nappies that are more absorbent. Bigger vest / looser night clothes.

zaffa · 25/04/2021 13:13

Have you tried pampers? When it came to through the night nappies, pampers were the only ones that worked for me.
Also, I used to change DD at every night feed until she dropped them (I don't do it now if she wakes for a bottle but she's 16 months). To make it easier on him, get some puppy pads and change him on them on the bed so if he wees while changing then it will go on the pad and no need to change the sheets

CupcakesK · 25/04/2021 13:13

You could try adding a wrap meant for reusable nappies over the top. Something like this:

littlelambnappies.com/collections/littlelamb-wraps

www.thenappylady.co.uk/nappy-wraps/peenut-totsbots-nappy-wraps.html

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/baby/9641482031?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Should stop the leaks, buy a couple and wash every other day

wouldthatbeworse · 25/04/2021 13:19

We had this but without the co sleeping . So many sleeping bags... we double nappied. You need to go one or 2 sizes up for the over. I also experimented with cutting the middle bit off one nappy and inserting into another nappy but never quite got it right. A reusable wrap sounds a good idea. Mind just grew out of it at about that age I think. And Always pampers at night. Good luck

billy1966 · 25/04/2021 13:26

I had one like this.
Nappy+ Aldi were the best nappies IMO.
A cloth over that and a plastic pance over that.
Did the trick.

Go up a size to 4+ perhaps try a plastic pance over the nappy if they can be bought anywhere.
Very hard when they fully wake up at an ungodly hour.

gamerchick · 25/04/2021 13:29

You're not using sodocrem are you? A few people use it as a barrier cream when you only need a smidge. Nappy granuals don't like the stuff.

gamerchick · 25/04/2021 13:30

You could always use a nappy liner as well.

WishICouldThinkOfAGoodName · 25/04/2021 13:38

When we had this issue it was always due to the wrong size nappy. Also, maybe he just needs to be changed more frequently? I know that doesn’t help with sleep, but maybe a change right before you go to bed? The other thing is now the weather is warmer you could try less clothing layers, so just a sleep suit rather than a vest too, I’ve found mine all slept better and wriggled less when they were cool.

Good luck!

balalalala · 25/04/2021 13:52

We had the same problem. We had a bit of luck using a reusable nappy on top of a disposal one. I also had some luck by stopping using a vest. I thought it was holding it in place but I guess it wasn't!

FaintlyMacabre · 25/04/2021 14:07

Reusable nappies never leaked for us- the 2 part sort with a wrap over the top- Motherease wraps are very good. You can add a booster for extra absorbency.
Even if you don’t use reusables full time you could get 2-3 for overnights.

RebelByLight · 25/04/2021 14:10

Are you putting the nappy on too tight? We had this and solved the issue by not closing the nappy as tightly, counter intuitive, I know! If you've got the tapes touching in the middle, it sounds quite tight.

SamanthaVimes · 25/04/2021 15:19

We use 2 4+ nappies, one on top of the other making sure the outside one is higher at the back (that’s where we were getting leaks) and it’s fixed our issue
