Yesterday we had the police knocking on our door to inform of us burglaries on our street. Not really that unsettling but reminded of keeping windows closed when we are out etc and off they went.

Been out all afternoon today and forgot to leave on the internal light. Came back and was doing something and there was like a tap which could have been a knock but wasn't sure. Shouted out and got no reply, but then there was a bigger knock, so I shouted who was it etc and got no response. We have a glass door and I could see the person was wearing dark clothing so I asked is that the police please?

There was a pause and he said no it's the takeaway man can you open the door

We hadn't ordered any take away so I said this and he muttered "must have got the wrong house".

Walks down the street, hangs around for ten minutes and then jumps in a super fancy car. Couldn't see him carrying anything in his hands.

Partner and I are having a disagreement on whether I should be unsettled by this (I totally am feeling a bit jumpy by it all to be honest), he thinks there's really nothing odd about it at 9:45 on a Friday night.

Yabu - nothing to be worried about
YANBU - would make me a bit nervous.

Yanbu- I wouldn't like that at all.

mayblossominapril · 23/04/2021 21:59

Yes that would unnerved me

Terrysmyorange · 23/04/2021 21:59

YANBU and I would certainly report to the police considering what has been going on with local break ins etc. It will help with any intel they have.

GoWalkabout · 23/04/2021 22:01

I think it was dodgy but you dealt with it well and they went away so don't worry. Remember, you could spend the next few days freaking out and not sleeping, and nothing might happen, you have gained nothing. Just up your home security and make the house look occupied and go about your life.

Fullmoonequalsnosleep · 23/04/2021 22:02

I agree I would be reporting it to the police given they have been knocking to advise about burglaries on your road. I would be completely unnerved by it too.

PolarnOPirate · 23/04/2021 22:03

Yes that would freak me out massively especially as the police have already been around, I’d ring them!

FauxFoxFun · 23/04/2021 22:05

I did look at the police website but it says if a crime is committed to report, and as one hasn't been committed Im not sure i can do it that way.

Will maybe try and speak to someone when I see them around next.

I'd be really shaken. I hope you're ok.

doitwithlove · 23/04/2021 22:12

I would report it now on the non urgent police number - 101.
At least if reported, patrols may be stepped up in your area.

CombatBarbie · 23/04/2021 22:15

Dark clothing, fancy car.... I reckon a drug dealer has the wrong house. But yes I probably would be unnerved by this too.

Percypigg · 23/04/2021 22:17

Would you consider getting a Ring doorbell type thing?

Dizzy1234 · 23/04/2021 22:19

Yep, I'd completely freak out, you're not overreacting.
Ring 101 and report, I'd also invest in a ring doorbell and put some cctv signs up then I'd hide under the bed covers!
I spend a lot of nights aline due to oh working nights so I would definitely freak out 💐

214 · 23/04/2021 22:19

If you by any chance have the details of the Officer that called round, update them direct. Generally speaking, these kind of house to house follow up enquiries / reassurance visits are made by PCSO's, and most forces have a way of contacting your local neighbourhood team of PCSO's on-line, definitely worth letting them know.

LizB62A · 23/04/2021 22:20

You could call 101 and just get them to take a report of potentially suspicious behaviour - they may get other reports.

cerealgamechanger · 23/04/2021 22:22

That is creepy AF. Report most definitely.

SoftPower · 23/04/2021 22:23

Call the non emergency number, they will want a description of the man and the car since there is an ongoing investigation if you were warned about other burglaries.

mamal29 · 23/04/2021 22:23

This would scare me too op!

mamal29 · 23/04/2021 22:24

Defo!
SnackSizeRaisin · 23/04/2021 22:24

We had something similar recently and it was a bit unnerving. Our neighbours have CCTV that covers our house and saw someone trying the doors. Nothing much to do except ensure they are locked really. I might consider a CCTV if neighbours didn't already have us covered!
Do you have a community policing team or PCSO? We do and we are advised to report anything suspicious and they go and check it out - doesn't have to be a crime - just things like door to door tradespeople or people loitering. We do live in an area with a lot of elderly people who are probably quite vulnerable to crime.

SnackSizeRaisin · 23/04/2021 22:25

Also you maybe able to report via a website to avoid the hassle of phoning

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 23/04/2021 22:38

Agree with @SnackSizeRaisin that you might be able to report it online as a general information to the local force. I've done that in the past. Also, your local councillors might be interested - we have a lot of problems in my area with county lines, so my ward councillor asks us to email her even the most trivial of information so she can put it all together. One incident for you, but it may be that it's happened to ten other local people in the last week.

And I would be freaked out too. I had similar happen a few years ago (wrong house), and it made me really wobbly for the next few nights, even though I knew my house was totally safe.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 23/04/2021 22:38

Agreed, especially given he said he had a "takeaway"
Howshouldibehave · 23/04/2021 22:58

Were you watching him-was he holding a takeaway bag??

FauxFoxFun · 24/04/2021 09:32

No, no takeaway bag that I could see.

Will chat to the police if I see them around today.

I’d feel a bit jumpy, but I live on my own. You have a big strong man there, so I hope you feel safer now Grin
