Yesterday we had the police knocking on our door to inform of us burglaries on our street. Not really that unsettling but reminded of keeping windows closed when we are out etc and off they went.

Been out all afternoon today and forgot to leave on the internal light. Came back and was doing something and there was like a tap which could have been a knock but wasn't sure. Shouted out and got no reply, but then there was a bigger knock, so I shouted who was it etc and got no response. We have a glass door and I could see the person was wearing dark clothing so I asked is that the police please?

There was a pause and he said no it's the takeaway man can you open the door

We hadn't ordered any take away so I said this and he muttered "must have got the wrong house".

Walks down the street, hangs around for ten minutes and then jumps in a super fancy car. Couldn't see him carrying anything in his hands.

Partner and I are having a disagreement on whether I should be unsettled by this (I totally am feeling a bit jumpy by it all to be honest), he thinks there's really nothing odd about it at 9:45 on a Friday night.

Yabu - nothing to be worried about
YANBU - would make me a bit nervous.

He wasn't here! He left - that was why we ended up having the conversation about whether I was being unreasonable to be nervous!

(And he's tiny and would be a bit shit in any solution like this so it wouldn't really make much difference... but don't tell him I said that!)

Burglars don’t often knock on hour door proclaiming they’ve a take away..

mistermagpie · 24/04/2021 09:50

He might have been knocking to check whether they were in.

Yes I wouldn't like this, I would probably lay contact the police officers who spoke to you earlier, presuming you have their details. I work with the police and we welcome intel on lots of things that aren't crimes. Don't try to decide what's important to the police, let them do that and if it's not useful then no harm done.

RaiseTheBeastie · 24/04/2021 09:52

It could have been dodgy - but it also sounds plausible that it was a delivery driver.

If it was a driver, they wouldn't have been expecting to be asked if they were the police - hence reasonable pause before response. Hanging around whilst calling the shop or customer trying to check the correct address, before driving off - also easily explained.

And regarding the car, when we get a takeaway I'd say 50% of the time the driver's in a pricey sports car type! Likely to be the business owner helping out in busy times ime, pretty common here.

Overall I probably think it's more likely to be genuine -a rumbled burglar would be more likely to jump in the car and take off, not hang around.

Fir a delivery guy to not be carrying any take away.. that rings bells to me.

Plus you hear of people knocking to see if anyones in/has a dog/phoning the house etc...

Plausible enough it is something to worry about, but not something to allow to rule your life.

Id personally err on the side of caution and let the non emergency police number know, purely as they were knocking to let you know of burglaries.. if they hadn't informed you, it wouldn't occur to me to unless it happened again..

@Bluntness100

Burglars don’t often knock on hour door proclaiming they’ve a take away..

I think they do as a way to ascertain whether anyone is home. If someone answers - lame excuse. If no-one answers - rob away.

LadyBugg · 24/04/2021 10:15

If you have a description of the man and car I would be reporting it. It might be a delivery driver, no harm done, it might be a jigsaw piece to a wider picture that might put a stop to the burglaries.

Usually I wouldn't think to report but would be wary of such an incident, but as you've had burglaries in the street and police at your door attempting to gather evidence yanbu to feel unsettled and report.

FauxFoxFun · 27/04/2021 10:06

@Bluntness100 There's been a spate of burglaries near me where people have knocked on the doors pretending to be delivery / take away etc - sadly in one of them children were harmed.

Thanks everyone.
