To go vegan after watching seaspiracy

Jillybons · 23/04/2021 20:08

I eat meat and fish at the moment (though try to buy less regularly and as ethical as possible) but after watching this I just can’t imagine eating fish again. The global fishing industry is an absolute travesty 🤦‍♀️

I was pescatarian but have cut it out completely since watching it, I was shocked.

MatildaTheCat · 23/04/2021 20:22

I’m refusing to watch it. I adore fish. ☹️

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 23/04/2021 20:27

I've had the same thoughts after watching. I've seen things since criticising the documentary, comments taken out of context etc. However it was the sheer cruelty that will stay with me, so fish is a no from me. I can't go veggie or vegan and keep my iron up, I have tried and got in a right mess! I also need to think about the dietary needs of the rest of the household. So I'll continue to eat meat and make the best choices I can with it.

People like you are the reason our planet is such a mess. What an idiotic thing to say
PurpleDaisies · 23/04/2021 21:35

You can go vegan for any reason you want. You don’t need anyone’s permission.

Scarlettpixie · 23/04/2021 21:38

Go for it. It’s not as hard as people think once you have a reason to give it up.

PattyPan · 23/04/2021 21:39

I am already vegan but I couldn’t finish watching it. I was in floods of tears at the Faroe Islands bit! DP isn’t vegan but I do the shopping, previously I erred on the side of buying him fish and eggs over meat and dairy but I’m avoiding it now unless he specifically requests something.

Welshmaenad · 23/04/2021 21:40

Of course you wouldn't be unreasonable.

I went vegan from veggie 2.5 years ago. My DC and I eat so well, it wasn't as hard as I imagined at all. It's been great for my physical and psychological health.

Highly recommend the Facebook group Non-Judgy Vegans UK for support with your transition minus the stereotypical militant vegan madness.

kikisparks · 23/04/2021 21:41

You can do it! Well done for changing your actions, we all need to be willing to change if we’re going to have a planet left in a century. Cowspiracy is worth a watch too. If you need any help or advice just say.

Have you seen Cowspiracy?
tilder · 23/04/2021 21:41

The documentary was edited to shock and be sensationalist. Doesn't mean fishing is good. Fishing is horrendous for the environment and a cruel way to kill animals.

Climate change will be worse, but for now fishing is about the worst thing we do to the seas.

Go eat farmed mussels. Or farmed seaweed.

Planningobjection · 23/04/2021 21:42

I haven’t watched it yet but I’ve been veggie for over 20 years, I can’t imagine going vegan though. I’d miss proper pizza too much. Can I ask why seaspiracy is a 15? I want to watch it with my 9 year old but not sure if it’s appropriate.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 23/04/2021 21:46

Im actively trying to cut down on meat and fish. I have 2 vegetarian days a week at the moment, but that will probably increase.

I honestly cant face watching it.

Neonprint · 23/04/2021 22:09

Well it's a bit basic. Like are you seriously saying you just learned from an over hyped Netflix doc that meat and fish are terrible? I just feel a bit embarrassed for all these people jumping on vegetarianism and veganism on the back of this.

It makes you look a bit daft because you seemingly weren't aware of the problem before and the makes you look easily swayed. Do what you want but do research beyond a Netflix doc.

sweetkitty · 23/04/2021 22:49

I’m vegan and couldn’t watch it haven’t even watched Cowspiracy. I have been inside slaughterhouses in this country and that’s enough. They were horrendous. I used to work in the food industry and that’s put me off meat and dairy for life. Chicken is the worst, so unbelievably cruel

Dobbyisahouseelf · 23/04/2021 22:50

OP I need to watch this as my teenager DD has been telling me about this programme. I cooked fish for dinner before she had a chance to tell me about it and she couldnt bring herself to eat the fish.

It's so difficult because I thought that eating fish was so much better than meat. I think as a family we really need to up our vegetarian options.

willowtree81 · 24/04/2021 01:34

Just do it! The only thing you'll regret is you didn't do it sooner. I'm 7 years in (always LOVED food, never expected to be vegan). Never felt better plus it's surprisingly enjoyable!

Veganuary has good resources accessible any time of year. Good luck - and I'm happy to help if I can. 🌱

Some people aren't too proud to admit they've learned something new and change their ways. Maybe they hadn't thought about the industry before and the doc exposed things they weren't aware of. I'm sure many did do additional research after watching - but I would never be embarrassed for someone for learning something new and changing their lifestyle for the better as a result.

Hmm I started being a vegetarian as a teenager and I’m now vegan. In my teens/early 20s as a vegetarian I was anaemic and had doctors tell me to eat a steak once in a while. 🙄 The problem was that I was a vegetarian who had simply cut meat out and not made any other changes. When I became vegan, I knew I had to really change my whole way of eating, it wasn’t just more restrictions, it was a lifestyle change. I eat a healthy vegan diet, take vitamins aimed at vegans and my iron levels are higher than they were than when I was a meat eater.

I’ve been vegan for a couple of years now and I have never felt better. I have clear skin, various health issues have improved and my energy levels are better than ever.

Any diet can be crap and cause deficiency. Being a healthy vegetarian or vegan requires a bit of effort but if you’re committed, it’s very easily done.

LemonSwan · 24/04/2021 02:00

Wait till they do Cropspiracy and we may as well all become Breatharians

ThereWasThisBoy · 24/04/2021 02:04

🙄 Yawn.

Luckingfovely · 24/04/2021 02:05

Oh come on people. This program was not a factual one. It's a Netflix entertainment show designed to shock and awe.

Most of the claims were debunked the day it came out, and many contributors same they were misquoted / taken out of context.

A simple fact check ought to remove some of the hysteria, at least.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/56660823

(I'm not, of course, saying that there are not some horrible practices out there, especially in Asia... but that you need to take the whole thing as deliberately provocative, and sense check it, rather than just believing blindly).

LemonSwan · 24/04/2021 02:07

@ThereWasThisBoy

Why are you yawning at that lol.

I am being deadly serious. Seaspiracy was shocking. Wait till you find out about our crop situation and I kid you not - its cricket farms and flavoured oxygen for us

LegoPirateMonkey · 24/04/2021 02:10

I really worry as in our house we have severe (anaphylactic) allergies and limiting our diet further seems hard to do especially with kids who in addition to allergies are in the fussy side. We can’t have any nuts - peanuts or tree nuts - in the house at all, for example. So vegan recommendations for things like nut butters are out. What do nut allergic vegans do? I’m increasingly concerned about the damaging effects of the meat, fish and dairy industries but I do want to give my children a varied and healthy diet that accommodates their allergies.

TrickorTreacle · 24/04/2021 04:17

I cannot say no to a bacon sandwich.

YABU because of that. And you know it!
