To not want a shower everyday?

I find they dry my skin out if I shower every day, even if I use lukewarm water and emollient creams - I have kept them short, and tried everything I can think of short of seeing a dermatologist. My skin itches like crazy after most showers.

I do feel a lot fresher of course but is it really unhygienic to switch to every other day? (And for my partner is it gross?!)

For all those suffering with eczema and other skin issues, can I please recommend neutragena visibly renew.
It has quite literally changed my life!
My skin would burn and itch after a shower a pretty much all day and night, the pain would literally take my breath away and I just wanted to cry with the frustration of it. I've tried all the usual creams and emollients which slightly helped BUT the visibly renew body lotion has transformed my skin.
When I first started using it I had scabs and welts from itching but from the first use the results were amazing. I'm actually contemplating putting fake tan on for the first time in 3 years. 😊🤞
I almost didn't want to recommend it for fear it might run out in the shops!

This is it!! The miracle👍

I shower twice to three times a week, I'm not a sweaty person at all. Never had any complaints. I do shower extra in summer because I hate leaving suncream on my skin for any longer than necessary.

starsparkle08 · 22/04/2021 17:57

I live alone with my son and don’t shower / wash everyday . Im so exhausted it seems like a mammoth task sometimes especially washing my hair

inmyslippers · 22/04/2021 18:00

I could get away with it in winter but not now.

Kljnmw3459 · 22/04/2021 18:02

every other day is fine, everyone is different. try it for a while and see if it works.

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/04/2021 18:04

@User33445

I couldn’t do it I’d hate to have a smelly fanny.
Having a strip wash and doing a good wash of your fanny will guarantee that it doesn't smell far more effectively than having a shower.
Meggie2008 · 22/04/2021 18:04

I shower every second day. I have terrible eczema and showers irritate it. I wash the important bits with a flannel on the in between days 🤷‍♀️

FlyingPandas · 22/04/2021 18:13

If you’re not a particularly sweaty or smelly person and it doesn’t bother you, surely every other day is fine.

Personally I have to shower daily but I’m a sweaty stinky kind of person and I’d feel gross if I missed a day. But if you’re ok with it, then go for it!

Halloweenrainbow · 22/04/2021 18:33

I wonder if washing with the flannel is worse for irritated skin because you can't rinse the soap off? What about showering regularly with just warm water? No soap/gel unless absolutely needed.

Howyoudoingirl · 22/04/2021 18:38

@ZZTopGuitarSolo

I take myself through a carwash twice a day. Much more effective. A mere shower really isn't enough to remove every trace of scent and oil from your body.
😂😂
Januaryissodull · 22/04/2021 18:40

Personally I wouldn't like it but it's not exactly unhygienic.

I think we've all got used to being very clean, but that doesn't mean a shower every day is essential.

Do you have a dirty job? You could try a gentler soap.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/04/2021 18:42

Why is MN so obsessed with how often other people wash their bodies and their possessions? It’s honestly so bizarre!

LST · 22/04/2021 18:43

I've never showered everyday. It isn't remotely gross.

Ratched · 22/04/2021 18:44

I shower 3 or 4 times a week.
I dont smell, my skin is in great nick, my hair is thick and healthy.
I wash every morning, I brush teeth 2 or 3 times a day.
I do not use deodorant - i don't whiff.
I am 60 and still remember having a bath on a Sunday night. That was THE bath😁

I am nit anal, about it - if I have been gardening, or it is a hot day, I shower or bath.
But I do not shower every morning as a matter of course.

apooagnuandyou · 22/04/2021 18:46

Good grief...

When you think the government had to tell people to wash their hands and HOW to wash them, you despair sometimes.

partyatthepalace · 22/04/2021 18:50

Every other day is fine w a flannel wash for the vitals in the middle. But I also have eczema/dry skin, and I find a shower less faff than a strip n flannel - so I have a mini shower just for the vital bits most days, and a wash-everything shower less often.

O'keefes is an amazing lotion for dry skin BTW.

sHREDDIES19 · 22/04/2021 18:51

My skin is normal and I only shower daily if I get sweaty (summer, workouts etc). Actually in the summer it might warrant a shower twice in one day. But other than that, every other day is perfect. I don’t have underarm hair and keep my pubes very short so I find I don’t smell after this length of time!

MarinPrime · 22/04/2021 18:52

OP it might be worth thinking about a water softener if you live in a hard water area. We got one for DS when his eczema was very bad and it made a huge difference, stopped my skin itching as well.

therocinante · 22/04/2021 18:55

I generally don't shower every day, never have done unless it's really hot out. Maybe 4/5 days a week? I have very dry skin and I only wash my hair once a week so showering everyday would be a faff and unnecessary.

It doesn't - the shower will wash away dead skin debris, sweat and bacteria far better than moving it around with a flannel, and a shower is also less likely to leave soap behind to irritate your skin - but if you aren't super sweaty it's certainly not necessary to shower every single day

Stellaris22 · 22/04/2021 18:56

These threads make me seem exceptionally gross and I'd love to see the judgey faces if people knew how we lived.

I shower once a week, same as DH. Never had any comments. It's very freeing when you stop conforming to societal standards.

ArnottsUnderpass · 22/04/2021 18:57

I have dry, angry skin. Have a mini shower, literally hop in hair back, quick wash down, out.

I movedt to Moogoo soaps after sons hands got really bad with Covid washing/gels and the body wash, shampoo. Improved mine and his itchy dry skin hugely. Definitely recommend.

MrsBerthaRochester · 22/04/2021 18:57

I grew up having the one bath a week and in between it was a wash with a flannel. Now I shower two or three times a week and that's fine. But I'm definitely a slattern by MN standards😅

cherry425 · 22/04/2021 18:58

I don't shower every day. usually every other
