To ask for help with reflux

Aliceandthemarchhare · 20/04/2021 19:12

And sorry, it’s a shameless post for traffic Blush

Is there ANYTHING I can ask for or do to stop my 4 month old spewing his feeds up, sometimes up to an hour and a half later?

I am fed up of changing his clothes and my clothes and hair washing and so on. But also the obvious problem is I don’t know how much he’s having. So it’s difficult to gauge fed times and so on.

Worse than that though is that he’s very distressed by it and I think (though can’t be sure) it stops him napping well. He rarely sleeps for more than two hours in the day. As a result he’s very overtired in the evening.

Sitting him up doesn’t work. We’ve had Gaviscon and omeprazole and neither have really helped and it’s driving me mad!

Is he breast or bottle fed? Has he been checked for lip and tongue tie?

PinkCookie11 · 20/04/2021 19:14

If bottle fed, Kendamil milk is a massive game changer!!

Aliceandthemarchhare · 20/04/2021 19:15

He had a tongue tie snipped when I was trying to establish breastfeeding- I don’t think it was a particularly bad one though. I can look into Kendamilk. What is different about it?

My dd2 was like this, it was hideous and soul destroying. All my clothes were soaked with vomit and every time I washed my hair she puked in it.

To be honest nothing worked (sorry!) she was much better when on solids and it just gradually improved from there.

Hang in there and hopefully you've done the worst bit xx

InvincibleInvisibility · 20/04/2021 19:17

Have you tested for intolerances? DS1 was like this and was diagnosed lactose intolerant when he was 3. I wish we'd known earlier.

Other than that, we just had to wait it out until he was 12 months and could have a stronger reflux medicine (inexium) which he took until he was 5.

The reflux will definitely disturb sleep unfortunately

Aliceandthemarchhare · 20/04/2021 19:19

The thing I can’t make any sense of is that although according to all the literature he should be on six bigger feeds a day he can’t manage more than 60-90 mls - unless it’s night, when he sleeps quite well!

DS1 was like this but it was cow milk protein allergy which was the underlying cause. Once he was on neocate, it gradually cleared up.

DS2 is 4 weeks old and has silent reflux - he’s bottle fed expressed milk, or breast fed, we’ve just started with carobel - following your thread with interest for tips too!

You’ve likely tried all the tricks, but paced feeding (although this hasn’t worked for us and gave DS bad wind), feeding slowly with lots of breaks, sitting upright for 30 mins or so after a feed

PinkCookie11 · 20/04/2021 19:23

It contains no oils, organic, made in the Lake District.
My LO had silent reflux and someone recommended it to me and it change mine and my babies life! Different baby

My son was lactose intolerant but undiagnosed until 3. The change was remarkable.

I believe colief is really helpful?

onthecathunt · 20/04/2021 19:28

We used the cow and gate anti reflux formula for DS silent reflux, can buy it in the big supermarkets. It's just a much thicker formula so we use the biggest teat size on the bottles but it changed him overnight. No more back arching and screaming for hours on end!

Jubaju · 20/04/2021 19:29

Aptamil reflux milk really helped my daughter as it’s thicker and sat better, stopped her puking everything back.

Gothichouse40 · 20/04/2021 19:29

Take your child to the GP. I know someone whose child had this and they needed a small op to fix it. It was projectile vomiting the child had though, constant.

capricorn12 · 20/04/2021 19:38

My eldest son was like this to the point where I actually took a puke stained bib to match up for a new carpet because I was constantly cleaning his vomit off the floor( and him and me). He also had Gaviscon which made little difference but the doctor told us that once he was on his feet he would be fine and that was exactly what happened. Luckily he walked at 12 months so the wait wasn't too long.
He's 18 now and still suffers from heartburn.

WaferThinIce · 20/04/2021 19:41

Worth checking for allergies or intolerances. My son was like this. They kept telling me he’d grow out of it. And he did.....but it took 3 1/2 years! The constant acid can cause damage to the oesophagus plus leave them deficient in essential minerals so it shouldn’t be ignored. I had to take a change of clothes for me as well as him when we left the house.

second this, it's awesome my girl is thriving!!
PollyRoe16 · 20/04/2021 22:40

Research possible allergies as reflux is usually a symptom of something else not a stand alone issue. You can try things like carobel to thicken the milk hopefully helping to keep it down or infant gavsicon. If these don't work there are medications such as omeprazole and lansoprazole that can help

Starrr123 · 28/07/2021 22:41

Hi!!! Just wondering did the corabel help anyones little ones ? I am gonna try it tomorrow x

NewFlav · 28/07/2021 23:08

Ah I remember this stage well. I think I have a little PTSD from it tbh. The first 6 months of DS's life were not enjoyable for me. Everything and everyone constantly covered in puke and DS couldn't lie on his back or he would choke on vomit so we had to take turns of holding him upright so he could sleep. It was torture! He always seemed so unsettled too as if he was in constant pain. I felt like a complete failure as a parent as I could never soothe him. I became a hermit as I was too afraid to leave the house with the crying and puking. Rest assured it does and will get better.

Do you use a prep machine? I found that this always made things worse. I think it made the milk more frothy. Aldi formula was the least frothy I could find and it did help slightly. Also hold upright during a feed and keep baby upright for 30 minutes after every feed and make sure they are well winded. We eventually seen a pediatrician after months of vomit covered hell. They gave us omeprazole and carobel to thicken the feeds. It helped slightly but in all honesty the only thing that made any difference was weaning DS at 6 months. He was like a completely differently baby once we started him on solids. There was no allergies or anything as we had all the tests, sometimes you just get a sick baby unfortunately. Hopefully this phase passes soon for you.

Starrr123 · 29/07/2021 06:59

@NewFlav ooo bless you :(
Its awful isnt it ! Thats how i am becoming :(
My gp said just to see how it goes because they dont want to be giving medication and told me to ride it out and when my lo is on solids things will get alot better like you said! But shes only 8 weeks! I have a long way to go! It is awful :( gonna try the corabel and pray for a miracle! She gets bads days with the eeflux and better! I do have a prep machine? Maybe i need to stop using it. I sit her upright for 45mind after afeed. I just hope this psses xx

Starrr123 · 29/07/2021 07:01

@NewFlav the thought of 6 months :( how did you cope :( xx

NewFlav · 29/07/2021 09:52

Don't let them fob you off reflux babies are HARD work. Maybe try a few days of making the bottles with the kettle instead of the prep machine and see if it makes any difference? Easier said than done when you have a screaming baby at 2am!

We initially tried baby gaviscone but that gave DS horrible constipation so we stopped that. We then tried ranitidine and that made no difference what so ever. DS started to reject feeds and lost loads of weight and eventually after a few trips to a&e we were referred to a pediatrician and that's when we got the omeprazole and carobel.

It took us months to get to that stage and it did only help slightly but it was better than nothing. It might seem like forever away but the time will fly past and before you know it your baby will be on solids and it will all be a distant memory. Good luck and I hope the carobel works for you.

Starrr123 · 29/07/2021 10:08

@NewFlav they are telling me its reflux but are like dont worry it will just go! But they arent living in it. And my little isn’t comfortable!
I wish they had better care! If it continues i will take her to A&E!
At what age did your little what refuse feeds etc?
They arent bothered as she is putting on weight but i am worried she will refuse the food!
I reallly hope the corabel works too! Hopefully wull help keep they sicky acid down! Xx

NewFlav · 29/07/2021 10:19

They said the same to me. It's not reassuring when you have a baby that cries and is uncomfortable all day long. I think DS was about 4 months when he started refusing feeds and loosing weight. It was as if he was afraid to eat because the vomiting was too painful for him Sad I have absolutely no idea how we coped without turning on each other because it was a very very stressful few months but somehow we got through it.

Let me know if the carobel helps. Ds would still try to vomit on it but his vomit was too thick to come up so this is what made the most difference. Try and get as much help from family and friends as you can so you can have a break and a rest. We never had any help and I feel like this and the lack of sleep lead to PND with me. It will probably get worse before it gets better so try and work out a good routine with your OH so you are both getting a break and taking turns to deal with the baby.

HelplessProcrastinator · 29/07/2021 10:36

I started my 4 month old on food on the advice of the HV. Just fruit and veg purée at first. She calmed down almost immediately and was less distressed. She still had reflux but it wasn’t as bad and she started to gain more weight as she was keeping more milk down. Sleeping through by 6 months.

I do feel she was let down by medical professionals who did not take the reflux seriously at all. She lost so much birth weight and struggled to gain and was distressed so much of the time. Really tough times.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 29/07/2021 10:38

LOL I came on to massively sympathise and reassure the OP it does pass and my now 7 month old is loads better …

No wonder it sounded like me Grin but why on earth was this resurrected?!
