As the title. Would this be a good thank you gift? Does anyone recommend a particular machine?
I was going to get some pods, cakes and biscuits too

I'm a nurse and I'd love this!!! We got one for work and Everyone brings their own pods in it's not a waste at all!

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 20/04/2021 21:36

They may not be able to accept it depending on their gifts policy.

mamal29 · 20/04/2021 21:37
It’s a fantastic idea. Why do people think that nurses won’t be able to buy good coffee for it? Capsules cost

BadEyeBri · 20/04/2021 21:38

@Thunderblunder perhaps read my first post

The pods are technically recyclable but very few are actually recycled. It is a tricky, expensive process and very few sites offer it. In reality it is something like 2% of pods that are recycled.

To say they are recyclable is absolute greenwashing.

Honeybee2021 · 20/04/2021 21:45

Actually where I work and in many other hospitals nespresso machines are quite common in the staff rooms now!

Thunderblunder · 20/04/2021 21:50

Sorry I missed about the cake and biscuits although I wouldn’t be able to have them either unless they were vegan. Smile

BadEyeBri · 20/04/2021 21:55

Well it's unlikely they are for you

We d have to get it tested electric wise - can't remember what it's called. Cafeteria and ground coffee mugs or loads of teaspoons - where do they go???

Embroideredstars · 20/04/2021 21:57

If you really want to treat them, write a personal card to each one who meant something to you or wrote to their matron, naming them rather than generic "thanks everyone"

That means the world emotionally and is something tangible they can use as evidence in their appraisal (because we have to prove we are good at our jobs and care about people a personal compliment is very valuable!) or keep to boost their confidence

Hankunamatata · 20/04/2021 21:59

Our staffroom has a nespresso. Boss brought it (nhs). I love it. So handy for a quick coffee

Bellevu · 20/04/2021 21:59

Sodastream woudl be my suggestion. The most important thank you to give is an email to the director of nursing that names individuals. Ask them to personally feedback to the ward team so your comments can be used for the individuals' appraisals and Revalidation.

You can also ask if the ward has an amazon list - some of them have items that staff tend to buy for patients (colouring books, hand creams etc).

littlepieces · 20/04/2021 22:05

Really kind idea but yes, the pods are so expensive and also the ward will probably not allow appliances that haven't been safety tested... and to get it safety tested will probably be a massive hassle.

We just found a local company to put together a hamper of nice teas, biscuits and fruit for the nurses that took care of my nan. That's honestly what makes their days bearable and they get through it quick.

Recycling should be the last action when considering the environment. Reduce, reuse, recycle. We should be looking at reducing rather than recycling.

20viona · 20/04/2021 22:08

That'a a great idea. One of our SHOs got us a tassimo machines as a leaving present and we all love a posh coffee every now and then.

MumofSpud · 20/04/2021 22:09

My local hospital has an Amazon wish list that you can access!

Crappyfridays7 · 20/04/2021 22:12

We’ve got a coffee machine. And a tuck shop. 3 staff keep both stocked up and we charge for each coffee which then goes back into the pot for more pods/juice/crisps etc much cheaper than the coffee shop & means we have food on the ward & don’t have to leave on breaks if we don’t need to. We manage fine with a rota for the coffee machine cleaning and stocking up. Also time to eat:have a coffee a 12 hour shift is a long time we do get breaks. I don’t drink coffee but I’d think this was a lovely gift & our fridge and coffee machine were new so quick checks and ups date stickers applied by maintenance person and we were good to go.cards are also appreciated, it’s nice to know you’ve done a good job. Also used for our revalidation hope you’re on the mend op take care Flowers

It's lovely to hear of someone so appreciative of good care they've received!

I'm a nurse and would appreciate a nice cake to share around the staff, maybe a little hamper of tea, coffee etc if you're looking to give a few things. But the nicest thing would be a thank you card. And as a pp has said, an email to PALS would be great!

UrAWizHarry · 20/04/2021 22:15

@Babysharkdoodoodood

Agree the pods are recyclable. I have a lovely Caran D'ache pen made from Nespresso pods. They also turn them into pods.

You can also get the pods from Aldi and other supermarkets. Don't have to use the Nespresso ones anymore

Recycling still takes energy, as does transporting the pods in the first place. Using ground coffee/beans doesn't require that cycle of distribution and recycling, it's far better not to waste the material in the first place.

Not to mention that the stats of how many pods actually get recycled is pretty low.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/04/2021 22:15

I did nursery a thank you hamper when DS left. I put good quality tea, coffee (a few different types) squash, hot chocolate, hand creams, a big box of biscuits and personalised pens - maybe something like this op?

WendyJames35 · 20/04/2021 22:20

Nurse here. I think it's an absolutely lovely idea and it would be hugely appreciated by staff where I work!

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/04/2021 22:20
@SchrodingersImmigrant I think it’s sadder to think that nurses wouldn’t be able to enjoy a fresh coffee because it costs 10p. Give them a treat. Don’t give them instant coffee because you think they wouldn’t manage a nespresso. That’s my opinion.
It can be a treat without the machine though. As I suggested in my first post. Nice local coffee and good french press. Easy peasy, can use so so many coffees, no leccy, no hassle.

chickychicchic · 20/04/2021 22:21

Lidl do the pods and new items don't need PAT testing straight away

PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya · 20/04/2021 22:25

There’s a nespresso machine sat in one of my offices and it’s filthy Envy

These threads are popular at the mo. Makes me a bit sad that people think NHS staff want anything other than a fair wage. Fuck I’d just like to be allowed to claim bank hours for the approximately 20 hours a week on top of my wte that I’m doing.

Sorry to derail OP. Any gift you give will bring joy in the moment it is given. I hope you’re on the mend Flowers

Some good ideas on this thread. My mum has been in hospital for the last 2.5 weeks and I'd love to get the nurses something. They're being amazing and it's so hard that we can't visit right now :(

I was wondering if I was able to get them anything and whether they'd take it due to COVID-19 but good to know they would :)
