To buy a nespresso machine for the nurses on the ward that have looked after me?

As the title. Would this be a good thank you gift? Does anyone recommend a particular machine?
I was going to get some pods, cakes and biscuits too

It’s a fantastic idea. Why do people think that nurses won’t be able to buy good coffee for it? Capsules cost

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 20/04/2021 19:21

I'm surprised to see people saying they're expensive, a tube of ten pods is 3.50 - so 35p a coffee. Is that expensive?

And Nespresso recycle the pods as someone else pointed out.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 20/04/2021 19:22

Agree the pods are recyclable. I have a lovely Caran D'ache pen made from Nespresso pods. They also turn them into pods.

You can also get the pods from Aldi and other supermarkets. Don't have to use the Nespresso ones anymore

Babysharkdoodoodood · 20/04/2021 19:23

Should say they also turn them into *bikes.

SwayingInTime · 20/04/2021 19:24

Also a nurse and we would love it. Cafetières are a nightmare to wash up.

SwayingInTime · 20/04/2021 19:24

Glad you have had such a good experience that you’ve been inspired to gift something.

Cissyandflora · 20/04/2021 19:58

@SchrodingersImmigrant I think it’s sadder to think that nurses wouldn’t be able to enjoy a fresh coffee because it costs 10p. Give them a treat. Don’t give them instant coffee because you think they wouldn’t manage a nespresso. That’s my opinion.

TeaTimeReader · 20/04/2021 20:15

Is it a particular nurse or two or a much bigger group? I got my midwife and a trainee midwife Starbucks vouchers as a thank you

espressoontap · 20/04/2021 20:16

I'm a nurse. It's a lovely idea but it would need PAT testing, plus where would it be kept? It's ok if they have their own kitchen but management used to get arsey with us saying it was for patient food prep only.

I would go for some nice hand cream and biscuits.

BadEyeBri · 20/04/2021 20:18

@TeaTimeReader it was a gift for their rest room so for the whole ward. They've all been amazing. I just want to get something as a treat for them. They deserve so much more.

Another NHS worker here. We had a tun of chocolate, cakes, biscuits during January- it was lovely, and very much appreciated, but the best gift was a huge box of fruit. We were all so OD’d on sugar, was so nice to have a change.

mummabubs · 20/04/2021 20:23

Really kind idea OP but as others have said staff then have to pay for pods, plus some may be Nestlé boycotters (I am and so are a few others in my team). Another consideration is that in both hospitals I work in all electrical equipment has to be approved and PAT tested by the fire officer before it can be used, ours will literally go around and cut wires if they find staff using equipment that's non-qpproved... Happened to our microwave 😅 Maybe best stick with some nice snacky bits and a really thoughtful card.

MissSM9102 · 20/04/2021 20:25

Lidl and Aldi do compatible pods for Nespresso machines, as do most of the other supermarkets, they don’t have to be expensive.
I finished my weekly visits to a ward last week after 6 months of going and will genuinely miss the team, I put £50 on a Costa gift card for them to share as they’ve said a few times they like the cheap coffee from the takeaway cart but nothing beats a Costa hot chocolate which I know can be quite expensive. I also did them a mini hamper with hand creams, fluffy socks and scrunchies, the stuff they use all the time Smile

Juliettbravo · 20/04/2021 20:26

We have one in our staff room. Originally the consultants bought it for themselves and it sat in their office but then it suddenly appeared, apparently to be used by all. I've never used it but quite a few do. Tbh I'd rather get a cappuccino from the costa on the ground floor. Getting it pat tested isn't that difficult but sadly people don't tend to look after things properly when it's not theirs. Somebody will undoubtedly break it. Lovely idea but really good instant coffee/tea bags and nice biscuits is a more practical idea !

MumOfOneAndAHalf · 20/04/2021 20:30

What about some nice new mugs?

crazyaccountant · 20/04/2021 20:35

I bought one with a large supply of pods and mugs for a unit I owe more than I can put into words, I spoke to staff and asked them what they would like and it was their suggestion. By all accounts it's been a great success and those that use it bring in their own pods and enjoy a decent coffee when they grab a minute. The unit isn't huge as very specialised and they have their own office/staff room to keep it in so I can see how it may not be as suitable on a huge ward. I would contact the staff and ask them if there is something specific they would really get the benefit from!

ThrowingAShellstrop · 20/04/2021 20:35

We have one in our tea room and it’s used plenty. The pods are recyclable so they go in our green waste bins. When we run out, we all chip in a couple of quid and whoever goes to the supermarket next gets the pods. We also have a toastie maker that we shove the dry hospital sandwiches in. As for PAT testing, they just come and test it when they’re next doing the rounds. They do all our phone chargers whilst they’re at it too Grin

As a department we recently got asked what we would like as a “treat” and I thought a subscription box of some kind would be great. You get tea/coffee/chocolate etc and can have it delivered to the department or ward.

TooStressyTooMessy · 20/04/2021 20:38

HCP here. I wouldn’t. As others have said maybe some standard but nice tea and coffee. The absolute best gifts are thank you cards or (the winner) an email to PALS / ward manager / that sort of thing.

TooStressyTooMessy · 20/04/2021 20:38

Unless you know the ward well enough to ask and get an honest answer back, just in case they do want one!

Candycane57 · 20/04/2021 20:45

Maybe a small hamper with tea bags, biscuits, coffee. It doesn't have to be fancy to be appreciated. What a lovely idea though, I'm sure they'll be very grateful for whatever you can give them.

1Morewineplease · 20/04/2021 20:45

It would be expensive to upkeep and staff would have to keep a rota .
It's also environmentally unkind and not every one drinks coffee.
However, your gesture is very generous indeed and you are so kind to be thinking this.
Is there a subscription service for tea/coffee/biscuits that might fit the Bill?
Or maybe a hamper of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, chocolate, deodorant wipes, hand cream, instant soups, blister plasters, paracetamol/ibuprofen tablets ( or not if it's a hospital) , breakfast cereal bars, small jams, body sprays , nail files and breath freshening chews.
We had such a hamper from an ex-member of staff... so bloody useful. It also included sanitary towels and tampons too.

This member of staff had remembered everything that anyone had secretly asked her for.
A legend.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/04/2021 20:48

Get some good coffee bags. Harrogate make lovely coffee bags.

Anyoneforadogwalk · 20/04/2021 21:29

My son is a pediatric doctor. Always getting gifted lots of chocolates. He says it’s lovely but the best gift by far is a card, particularly detailing why so happy with treatment. V necessary for annual reviews

Thunderblunder · 20/04/2021 21:33

What about those who don’t drink coffee?
What are you going to get them as a thank you present?
