Who should pay?

I rent a flat that has velux windows in one of the bedrooms. The window don’t have blinds. This has not been an issue for the last 5 years as it was not used as a bedroom. Now it’s being used as a bedroom the windows need blinds.

Should my landlord provide them? I asked him and he said no, but he would fit them if I bought them.

When I eventually move out I wouldn’t be taking the blinds with me, so why should I fork out £45 per window?

YANBU - landlord should pay
YABU - you should pay

Him I think. Whenever I've rented a flat I've never had to provide my own curtains.

Ellasmummyx1 · 20/04/2021 11:52

Does a landlord have to provide blinds or curtains?

The answer is a resounding ‘no’. It is not mandatory for landlords to provide window furnishings for a rental property in the UK. Whether it’s a furnished or unfurnished home, window coverings are considered a personal choice and are left to the discretion of the landlord and tenants

Aprilshowersandhail · 20/04/2021 11:53

Just hang a voile up.

Mydogisagentleman · 20/04/2021 11:53

I would say you, we are landlords and don’t provide anything beyond the cooker

Imapotato · 20/04/2021 11:53

I don’t think curtains are normally included when you rent. Maybe I’m wrong, but when I’ve rented I’ve always provided my own. I’d buy them and take them with me/sell them when I moved.

peboh · 20/04/2021 11:53

If you turned it into a bedroom, and it wasn't specifically when you signed your contract I'd assume the landlord would ask you to purchase them yourself.

parisian67 · 20/04/2021 11:53

I would say he should pay. I suppose there's a few other elements to think about too. Is it furnished or unfurnished? If furnished he should pay. If unfurnished there's probably an argument to be had! If it's a house share and he's charging and marketing it as a bedroom he should also pay.

AryaStarkWolf · 20/04/2021 11:54

If you want them you pay for them, Velux windows are standard sizes as far as I'm aware so you could actually take them with you if you moved out or you could sell them

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 20/04/2021 11:54

@Aprilshowersandhail

Just hang a voile up.
Do you even know what a velux window is?
ImNotThatPathetic · 20/04/2021 11:56

I've rented since I was 16. Lived in 10 different properties. I have never had blinds or curtains provided.
If you want them, you buy them but take them with you.

denverRegina · 20/04/2021 11:56

A voile 😂

I think you need to pay if you want a blind up. Good of him to fit them though. The IKEA ones are about £3 aren't they?

ImNotThatPathetic · 20/04/2021 11:58

Blinds2go is dirt cheap for blinds too.

Reinventinganna · 20/04/2021 11:58

You would pay. You are the one that wants blinds.

Reinventinganna · 20/04/2021 11:59

It’s very kind that they will fit them.

Is it classed as a bedroom/habitable room? If not I would understand ll reticence. I would have thought you could improvise if needs be using something like stick n sew velcro and fabric panels.

Fabpinky · 20/04/2021 12:00

I didn’t think about taking them with me/selling them. I’ll do that then!

Cf.. I used 2 net rods and a voile. Made my own.
Or is that too difficult for some?

User135792468 · 20/04/2021 12:01

You want the blind so you pay for it. Some people really are cheeky af.

Fabpinky · 20/04/2021 12:02

My line of thinking was that they’re not just any old windows I can put a curtain/normal blind up in, you have to get the specific ones for the code of the window.

It was always rented to me as a bedroom I just didn’t use it as one.

OP posts:
AOwlAOwlAOwl · 20/04/2021 12:05

I would usually say you pay. But a blind that will fit a velux window is quite specific and you probably wouldn't be able to use it again somewhere else.

Fabpinky · 20/04/2021 12:05

@User135792468

It’s not really cheeky though is it. Velux windows need specific blinds, not just any old curtain for £10 that I’m trying to dodge paying. It’s going to be £85+

emilyfrost · 20/04/2021 12:10

You pay. There’s no obligation for the landlord to provide window dressings.

JosephineBaker · 20/04/2021 12:20

It wasn’t there when you agreed to rent it, so it’s not included.

Felifox · 20/04/2021 12:27

You pay but when you leave offer them for sale to the LL.
