AIBU?

To want to report bakery for not covering cakes

Walking past my favourite patisserie after closing time I noticed they had left several different ranges of cakes on the counter uncovered overnight. I messaged them to query this and the reply was it was a mistake, they do normally. I have since seen them leave cakes uncovered after closing. I think this contravenes food standards? AIBU to want to report them to food hygiene standards? I am also upset that I can't bring myself to shop there again for my favourite treats too. Am I wrong to be bothered about this ?

My local bakery doesn't even wear gloves. The last time I got a cake they didn't even use tongs she just picked it up bare handed. They are a Nash's bakery. Vile.

Yes, I think after the year everyone has just had, reporting small businesses for things rather than just choosing not to shop there any more is a lovely gesture Hmm

You are right to be concerned, they might get darked on, or because of spider willies 🕸

Not sure why they'd do this as surely they're dried out by the morning. Wouldn't bother reporting them though

Leave it, just don’t shop there if it bothers you

Perhaps those ones are being thrown away? I wouldn't want to eat cake that had been out all night uncovered.

Really? You have time for this?

If you don’t like something they do, stop shopping there. Don’t report them. It’s not like you saw a rat chillin’ on the counter.

And yet no one died...

Gloves aren't a good idea when food handling. Cross-contamination, you see. Regular handwashing is far better.

The cakes would have dried out there is no way they can serve it
Go in tomorrow and buy one and see if it is a dried out cake then complain

I would not leave cakes uncovered, they'd go stale far too quickly!

I don't really trust food services that use gloves, people do not change them as often as they should! It's like because their hands are protected they don't consider the gloves getting dirty? Regular handwashing is much better.

I just hate things like this and it really winds me up.
I live in London and i saw this regularly before lock down ( cakes, croissants all on show and not covered at all ),however things have changed in the last year as nobody would even go near a cake ,or sandwich now if it was covered and in its own secure packaging.

I used to work in a bakers. There were a pile of cakes through the back waiting to go out . On the very top a mouse was merrily munchng away on a custard slice.
All of us saw it. They got put out anyway. (Minus the eaten one)
The co,-op regularly has baskets of cakes, croissants etc out uncovered. I saw a large fly crawling over the Seesticky buns one summer, told the girl but nothing changed. They still do it, I don't buy them .

As did many well known supermarkets but not anymore.
They would be Shut down immediately, they can’t have uncovered food about that anybody could of touched, sneezed or coughed on.
Don’t be Ridiculous .

I'm not being ridiculous, the local
co-op still does this.
Covid hasn't made any difference either

Don't report them but do complain directly again to management. Rats could easily be eating those cakes overnight.

If we're worried about the fate of small businesses in these trying times then it's kinder to complain directly to them so that it doesn't end in someone else seeing rats in the window and they get shut down.

I think you were absolutely right to email them. If you noticed it, then it's likely other customers did too. It doesn't help anyone to 'not mention it but don't shop there again.' You might want to shop there to support the business and have confidence in doing so. They have a duty to their customers.
