AIBU?

To want to report bakery for not covering cakes

Walking past my favourite patisserie after closing time I noticed they had left several different ranges of cakes on the counter uncovered overnight. I messaged them to query this and the reply was it was a mistake, they do normally. I have since seen them leave cakes uncovered after closing. I think this contravenes food standards? AIBU to want to report them to food hygiene standards? I am also upset that I can't bring myself to shop there again for my favourite treats too. Am I wrong to be bothered about this ?

Are you sure they aren’t just left out for display? Surely the ones they serve will be fresh from under the counter. This is very normal in my local bakerys

Can anyone link that "law" about having to have all produce like bakery covered?

What's with all the reporting small businesses for non infringements going on on various threads at the minute? People have FAR too much time on their hands.

@Fuckingcrustybread

My local LIdl is the same too and you can still pick your bread/croissants etc... with tongues the same way than before
How do you pick your bread/croissants with tongues? Do you lean over and lick the one you want?
I really don't fancy picking bread/croissants with tongues.

My DS will do this if unsupervised. I stopped going to our local Lidl when the bakery assistant said don’t worry just put it back Confused

@5foot418stone

I would not leave cakes uncovered, they'd go stale far too quickly!

I don't really trust food services that use gloves, people do not change them as often as they should! It's like because their hands are protected they don't consider the gloves getting dirty? Regular handwashing is much better.

Re gloves, you can say the same about doctors and nurses who likewise often don't change their gloves when moving from patient to patient.

My local bakery doesn’t cover bread or certain cakes at night because they often go off. Instead they let them go stale and sell as breadcrumbs the following morning. It’s the only place locally where you can get a massive bag of cake crumbs - They said caterers often just mix them with a bit of water or milk and then set them into cake moulds.

Lucky you, I wrote to my MP when I saw a fly in a fish mongers window last February. That was ages ago and I've not had a reply so far...this Government is beyond useless.

(and I bet the fly is dead now. Sad)[/quote]
I expect you're right.

So many flies get away with the most horrendous behaviour by dying before they can be brought to justice.

(TOTALLY agree re: goverment, too.. Probably have shares a maggot factory or something)

@HoppingPavlova

Rats could easily be eating those cakes overnight.

I would think this would be pretty obvious to staff and customers the next morning. It’s not like rats smooth the icing back over eaten bits or anything.

"Yes, I think after the year everyone has just had, reporting small businesses for things rather than just choosing not to shop there any more is a lovely gesture"

The bakery wouldn't have had to close. On the other hand it's really frustrating for good staff, who want to maintain food standards to work with people who don't. My DD has been stuck in her pizza shop job. She did it while qualifying as a chef. They failed ACE because of stupid sloppy things. It annoyed her and a few other staff members who've worked their arse off during the pandemic.

If it shouldn't be happening, then it shouldn't happen, there's enough people desperate for catering work, who do what's needed to keep people well.

Re gloves, hand washing is better. Gloves get minging.

That's odd. Covered cake left in a glass bakery counter (no heating on)would still be ok to eat & not dried out. Maybe customer numbers are down so they aren't bothering. Bit wasteful .

When I worked in bakery we wouldnt cover what were known as the "Long life" cakes - generally the heavily iced ones or things like bakewell tarts.
