I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?

@OssieShowman, yes, they do now. But they didn’t always: I visited as a Brownie in 1970, and it was just, you know, there! I suppose if English Heritage need to make sure that people don’t damage it (as they always have, only more idiots have the means to get there now) then they do need to charge people to pay for the security, information Etc. But it is a shame that it’s now a “Pay Paradise”...

@TildaKauskumholm

Fab thread. I often wonder if, in a dream when we are upset/angry/happy etc does our body demonstrate the same physical reaction as it does when we're awake, eg change in heart rate etc?
I once woke up crying for real when I was crying in my dream.

Another time I dreamt dh had cheated on me. I woke up Not Liking Him and barely spoke to him all day.

When I first visited Stonehenge, many years ago, you were able to walk right up to it. I remember wondering why people needed to write their names on it. It was being horribly disfigured because of vandalism. I also remember people there, trying to clean off the graffiti. I firmly believe, but don't officially know, that this is why we now have to pay to visit. I fully accept this, it's a way to help to preserve and protect. What other way is there, to protect our national heritage? Ideas, on a postcard please ......

DaphneHastings · 21/04/2021 15:02

would the child have to call them Miss X or could they say Mum?

my mum was the head of my primary school. I had to call her Mrs X in school settings. My friends called her Julie at my house but then Mrs X at school. Although I dont recall often having to refer to her by name. If teachers wanted me to take something to her they would ask me to go to "Mrs Xs office" or "the office".
it was horrible having her there. if i did any minor thing like chat or forget to bring something they would mention telling her. The other children didnt get threats about ringing home for menial things so it was always embarassing. I was definitely held to higher standards and, in some cases, treated worse because some possibly didnt like her (or thats the impression I got). Also TAs and new staff knew immediately whose child I was, so had clearly been warned to be on best behaviour when I was around! I wanted to be invisible so badly in that school.

 1. Saurons forces would have seen them, they're massive.
 1. They arent the slaves of humans. They want humans to do things themselves
 1. The best way was stealth
 1. The eagles were powerful, the ring could have corrupted them
That last makes sense. I've always wondered that. Having said that, it was my favourite book as a tenager, so if they had used the eagles, I'd probably have had to find another one. 😁

For people to have respect maybe?

As the mother of three girls, there was a period of around eight years when all four of us were menstruating and living in the same house. Our cycles did synchronise. It was a nightmare for the two male members of the household. Grin

normalsaline · 21/04/2021 15:57

@starrynight21

If a woman is taken ill/unconscious and is rushed to hospital, and they are on their period and have a tampon in, does someone check if they are on your period/tampon in

Yes, the nurses give you a wash and it's pretty obvious if this is the case. But no they don't replace it with a new one - they just remove the old one and put a pad in place.

But I always tuck the string inside so it wouldn’t be seen!
HikeForward · 21/04/2021 16:20

If you were unconscious or so unwell they needed to catheterise you, they’d notice the tampon or mooncup when trying to insert the catheter.

@Marchez
Thank you! That is the most comprehensive answer I have ever received. I appreciate that. I now wonder if people are checking their phones, calculators, etc. to see for themselves!

"I’ve thought of another.

What language do people “think” in if they are bilingual?"

If you're bilingual, you may not have a clear distinction between your native language and the other one(s). For many people, it's not the language of the country they live in either.
For me, it's whichever I've been reading or talking in most recently.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/04/2021 16:31

"Or does he just have a different surname from the rest of the family?"

You're assuming Miranda (?) changed her own name at marriage. Did she?

Gwenhwyfar · 21/04/2021 16:33

"1. In my local town the bus drivers go to the public toilets at the bus station, they take the float out of the 'till' on the bus and take it with them.. they also sometimes pop out into the small convenience shop, or stand and have a fag whilst waiting too.. (pre Covid times mind)"

I'm pretty sure country bus drivers go behind a tree etc. Harder for women drivers.

You might have missed it earlier on in the thread when I commented, but the actual starting salary is 26K. I went directly to the actual company website to check, rather than the Reed recruitment one. Reed have clearly made a mistake.
Fair enough:)

Gwenhwyfar · 21/04/2021 16:37

"Why are countries names different in different languages?

For instance Germany calls itself Deutsch land so surely it should be that in every language."

Historical reasons.

"We don't do it with peoples names."

Well, we do to a certain extent. Monarchs' names are translated as well as historical names.

DynamoKev · 21/04/2021 17:04

@AgathaAllAlong

What does it feel like to love music? What does music do for you, what's the experience of listening to it like for you?

I know I'm missing something when I see how music moves other people. For me music is something I might put on to occupy me during a car ride or while doing housework but I'd never sit and listen to an album or listen out and about. It's background noise, pleasant sometimes, and there are songs I like, but it doesn't really go beyond that. I also tend to focus on the lyrics above anything else.

I bloody love music. I cannot listen to music on a phone or a crappy radio or laptop though - needs to something decent quality so I can hear all the different parts. Part of the enjoyment is picking out different instruments and listening to what they are doing - eg following a bass line. Although I can’t play a note I like listening out to see if I can work out time signatures. One time a bloke who played in a band told me they used to wait until everyone had a drink or two, then play “take five” by Dave Brubeck but announce it as a waltz.

I love stuff like that.

At gigs I look around to see which instruments are doing what. It is really noticeable on old tv shows they used to zoom in on the wrong person during a guitar or bass solo due the production folk knowing nothing about music - its hilarious.

DynamoKev · 21/04/2021 17:05

Also at gigs I love listening for mistakes. For bands that don’t take themselves too seriously if you watch carefully you can see them grin when they mess up.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/04/2021 17:07

Dynamo - do you not like a capella then if it's all about the instruments for you?

DynamoKev · 21/04/2021 17:25

@Gwenhwyfar

Dynamo - do you not like a capella then if it's all about the instruments for you?
I never thought about that - but you’re right, I don’t. I do like songs and singing though. A friend sings in a choir and I go to their concerts - but there is always an orchestra.
SallySycamore · 21/04/2021 17:31

"We don't do it with peoples names."

Well, we do to a certain extent. Monarchs' names are translated as well as historical names.

My French and Spanish teachers at school were both native speakers and used to use to call me Marie and Maria rather than Mary (different name, but same idea).

shiningcuckoo · 21/04/2021 19:28

I taught my own children. They called me Mrs Cuckoo. Except when they forgot. In fairness half of the class called me mum.

Chocolatekitty · 21/04/2021 19:35

Based on the music things: if you're very musical, do you 'recognise' the notes and name them in your heard as you hear them? I feel it would really devalue music if I was thinking 'A, E, C, B sharp..." as I was listening to it!

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 21/04/2021 20:01

For me music invokes memories and I can remember different songs from when things happened and vice versa.

It’s not just the words or just the tune, it’s a combination and the feelings it triggers ie when my uncle died I was listening to a Bowie album. So if I hear a song from that album I remember where I was living, what I did, how I dressed etc.

It’s very integral to everything for me.

There are certain musical styles I’m really not a fan of, some are ok, and then the majority I love and would feel incomplete and down without it.

I love to sing as well (even though I’m not a great singer) and can sing the harmonies etc for a few songs. I go through fazes of listening to certain artists or styles.

Notsoaccidentproneanymore · 21/04/2021 20:05

I used to play a musical instrument and can read music. I don’t even think about what notes they are, though I can tell whether it’s a major or minor key, key change etc.
