I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?

"I mean a hypothetical society has collapsed, there are no doctors, someone has appendicitis scenario. I know its not legal for vets to treat humans)."

@iloveeverykindofcat unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question, but if society had collapsed I would have thought there would be no laws in the first place including the law that says a vet can't treat humans 🤔

NotMeItsYou · 20/04/2021 18:25

How do you do eye tests on young toddlers who can’t read or recognise letters?

Dilbertian · 20/04/2021 18:29

@IntermittentParps

Dilbertian, I've read somewhere recently that that's a myth.
It's happened to me - twice!

How do veterinarians have conversations with their doctors, and vice versa? Do they talk like any other patient/client, or do they use medical speak and translate for each other? Also, how well could a vet actually treat a human, in an emergency? (I mean a hypothetical society has collapsed, there are no doctors, someone has appendicitis scenario. I know its not legal for vets to treat humans).
I have been treated by a vet, I was playing in the Bingham cup a few years ago and had my scalp cut quite badly, I didn’t want to waste time at hospital so he closed the wound. That was in Amsterdam, no idea what their rules are.

I know during covid vets were approached to work in hospitals, a vet friend was approached, well, all the vets where he works were.

"It's happened to me - twice!"

Could be a coincidence.

Sobloodyexhausted · 20/04/2021 18:31

I find the school place allocation for primary and secondary school prior to offer day absolutely mind boggling. I know it’s all worked out algorithmically by computer measuring distance and but I do wonder a) if it ever goes badly wrong and b) how places were allocated back in days of yore when computers were not so advanced (in the 80’s say?). Was it done differently then?

lilywillywoo · 20/04/2021 18:33

I'm a GP, we do have to register with and see our own GPs. Although we can write private prescriptions for ourselves and others, it's frowned upon by the GMC to self treat or treat family members, (more so these days than in the past), so people tend not to.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 20/04/2021 18:34

DynamoKev That's a very eloquent explanation of the internet but I was thinking more of how it physically works. With a car you can see it driving, but information transfer on the internet is invisible.

This reminds me of something else I've never been able to work out - when physicists talk about something holding 'information' what do they mean? E.g. that information cannot escape from a black hole. Is it just anything that can be observed?

MammaSchwifty · 20/04/2021 18:37

And condoms have been around for centuries made out of thicker rubber or even leather or animal stomach lining I think.

and in the latter part of the 20th century, Tresco carrier bags

@Blerg

I live in a 23 storey tower block, a friend lives up on top floor and has had experience of mice and ants coming in, I'm on the 1st and get them as well, many voids within the block allow them to travel

@Advic3Pl3as3

1. How do women with really long fingernails put in/take out their tampons? Don’t the long nails make it really awkward?
  1. If you’re injured/unwell and unconscious and you wear contact lenses do the A&E check whether you’ve got lenses in and take them out?
To number 2, yes, it comes to light when you check the pupils if the patient is unconscious. If they are conscious and need theatre, they are asked the question then.

Why are male lions so big, strong, and muscley when they just sleep in the sun all day? Confused
Hi protein and no carb diet Smile, a bit of walking and shging.

@Witchinthewardrobe

Still waiting for the answer on second class post, very intrigued about that one.
Just asked my Royal Mail DH To put it simply: -1st and 2nd class get sorted and separated -1st class are loaded in as priority by a certain time of day and loaded off for delivery at specific time -2nd class will be sorted and placed on a later delivery truck and distributed a day later -people, not machines will separate the deliveries/post

Hope this helps?

@TalbotAMan why did we lose our body hair?

When I come down from having a bath, towel myself dry and put on various layers of clothing, the cat looks at me like 'You humans are odd. Why not have a lovely fur coat like mine which I keep on all the time? Very convenient. Also, I can shed fur if too hot ' She somewhat spoils her superior position by then commencing to lick her own bum.

KisstheTeapot14 · 20/04/2021 18:47

@MammaSchwifty In the series 'Harlots' (18th C), the ladies washed condoms after use, and squeezed 'em out ready for the next chap along.

Just like washing socks and hanging them up to dry. They looked pretty substantial. And obviously very eco friendly.

Probably some sort of animal membrane I'm thinking?

coodawoodashooda · 20/04/2021 18:48

I haven't rtft so if this has already been mentioned I apologise. But...what on earth did Charles and William say to Harry when they saw him over the weekend? And, the rest of the family? I cannot imagine. Genuinely cannot imagine anything that anyone could say to build a bridge between them.

winnieanddaisy · 20/04/2021 18:50

@Blerg we got cockroaches on 17 floor in Hong Kong . My friend had them on the 21st floor . I think you would still get them on floor 42 .

MammaSchwifty · 20/04/2021 18:52

There's a cherry tree in my front yard; there are many beautiful cherry trees in my road ~ there are never any cherries, though

all cherries are descended from the wild cherry tree, Prunus Avium, from memory. Then, some are selectively bred for the beauty of their blossom - these are called ornamental cherries. Others are selected for their fruits - for yield, or flavour, or colour, or size, or fruiting season. These are the varieties of edible cherries. They often don't have such showy blossom. You can buy either edible or ornamental cherries in all their variety online.

@AppleDolphin

Who picks up a guide dogs poo? Are they trained to poo in the garden? Do they pick up their own poo, they're certainly clever enough ;)

Or is it just left?

I always remember when DS was tiny and he dropped a sweet on the bus floor near a guide dog. The guide dog's wee tongue was desperately trying to get it, but just out of his reach. But he did move closer? Did he hell. What brilliant training.

Their handler does So, how does a blind person pick up their guide dogs poo?

It all comes down to training. Just as guide dogs are taught to guide their handler around obstacles and deal with busy environments, they are taught to toilet (pee and poop) on request. This is done by teaching our puppies two different commands, one for peeing and one for pooping. Our guide dogs use “Busy-busy” for urinating, and “Big-busy” for pooping. While out and about, the handler can use these commands to get their working dog to relieve themselves at a convenient time and place.

Toilet training starts early, and is an important skill that is developed during the first 12 – 18 months of the puppy’s life spent at their volunteer puppy raiser’s home. Puppy raisers are taught how to get the puppy into a toileting routine, and how to use the commands to reinforce good behaviour. It is a gradual process, but eventually, the puppy is taught to only go when asked.
encourage puppies to have “clean walks”. When the puppy indicates it needs to go, their red coat is removed and the appropriate command given. “Busy Busy” for peeing or “Big Busy” for pooping. The puppy will learn to associate their red coat with this behaviour, and their working harness later on. The end result is that the dog will only go when the handler asks, usually as part of a routine. When they are out and about the commands can be used either on lead or off lead in a safe and suitable place (but never in a coat or harness).

Once the puppy has grown up they are matched with a handler, who is also taught the toileting etiquette. The handler learns their dog’s routine, and the stances they will take when peeing or pooping. Both male and female dogs pee using the forward leaning stance and will round their back when pooping. The handler can figure out what the dog is up to by feeling the dogs back. This also gives them a good idea of where any poop might land so they can clean it up. Easy!
guide dogs can also be taught to use a toileting harness. This enables the dog to poop in a bag which the handler can then remove, tie up and dispose of.

All guide dog users will have different requirements depending on their lifestyle and level of sight, so it is important that they and their dog feel comfortable and confident with each other. Toileting is just one way that guide dogs and handlers are taught to work as a team.

When the first watch was made, how did they know what time to set it to?

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/04/2021 18:56

At what stage are you actually legally married? What would happen if you said your vows but one of you died before you signed the register? (Cheery I know)

DadDadDad · 20/04/2021 19:02

@BobISMyUncle

When the first watch was made, how did they know what time to set it to?
Noon is usually defined as the moment that the Sun is at its highest point in the sky. So you could set it using a sundial. (Your other task would then to be to make sure it ticked at the right rate, ie that the following day it said noon again at the right moment).
Deathraystare · 20/04/2021 19:03

@Wow, it's never occurred to me before that someone must have to change coma patients' pads. Genuinely thank you for this insight!

In a Pedro Almodavor film that's how they knew a woman in a coma (a ballet dancer) had been fiddled with. She was pregnant by a Down's syndrome lad who worked at the hospital and was obsessed with her.

iloveeverykindofcat · 20/04/2021 19:04

how did they know what time to set it to?

From a sundial, I would think.
