I was wondering today whether GPs see other GPs if they are ill? Can anyone tell me? I'm assuming yes as they wouldn't be allowed to prescribe medications for themselves?

What other random things have you always wondered/wanted to know?

@RedToothBrush

How would modern teenagers cope if mobile phones suddenly stopped working?

On that note, how would things go if we have a massive coronal mass ejection which knocked out our satellite system?

How would modern teenagers cope if mobile phones suddenly stopped working?

I'm 34 and very aware that my job would be nigh on impossible to do successfully if my mobile phone was removed now!

1. How do women with really long fingernails put in/take out their tampons? Don’t the long nails make it really awkward?
  1. If you’re injured/unwell and unconscious and you wear contact lenses do the A&E check whether you’ve got lenses in and take them out?
2 - from experience no they don't check if you're wearing lenses, too busy taking care of why you've come in unconsious .

21:07Staffy1 How computers work. How anyone thought to and managed to invent the first one. I suppose the same goes for a lot of clever inventions.

Just like TV. How did anybody think to come up with sending light down a cable (I think this is how it works!) and then that light rearranges into a picture on the screen?!?! I know somebody who firmly believes there are aliens amongst us, and it's things like this that do make me wonder at times!!

Yes, it does make you wonder.
UnitedRoad · 19/04/2021 23:49

Why don’t we call countries/places by their name? People in Italy (Italia?) call Rome Roma. It’s their city, and they call it Roma so therefore that’s it’s name. I think all countries and places should be called what the place calls itself. It’s very arrogant for other countries to alter names to please themselves.

Rosehip10 · 19/04/2021 23:52

@Rosewood017 Nope - sign language is broadly country dependant.

Who decided that male lions did not a lot and females had to raise the cubs and hunt for food.
It was arranged at the World Patriarchy Conference (women not admitted)

If you watch carefully, you will see that lionesses have no pockets. Therefore they are unable to carry money, weapons or tools, therefore they are doomed never to rule the world.

Rosehip10 · 19/04/2021 23:55

Why did qualified gas fitters in the UK stop being "Corgi" and rename themselves as "gas safe" - even now people still refer to plumbers/gas fitters as such "i.e Make sure they are corgi before touching your boiler!"

Staffy1 · 19/04/2021 23:57

@MintyMabel

*People in other countries associate different sounds with animals. For example, UK toddlers may call a dog a "Woof!" however Japanese toddlers say "Wan Wan". I find it fascinating!

But....is the actual noise the dog makes the same in those different countries?

It may well differ ever so slightly. Apparently pigeons have different dialects, whether they are Scottish pigeons or London ones. Heard the same about dolphins depending on where they are, so maybe other animals do as well.
NoProblem123 · 19/04/2021 23:58

How do you know you’re colour blind ?
Maybe everyone else is colour blind ?

How does electric stuff work ?

How do we know what to eat & how ?

Why do we wear stuff ? and keep so much crap - bears don’t and they’re very happy without.

Why don’t we move around more like the birds, instead of staying put like the trees ?

Have we benefited from living our lives out online, instead of just living ?

Aren’t we funny keeping pets -who started that off and why ?

The fact a helicopter took off on Mars today has completely blown my tiny mind.

omgwhy · 19/04/2021 23:59

When the first explorers went to discover new lands, how did they know if they were on a massive land mass like America or an island?

They wouldn't of had the supply's to explore the whole place to figure out amercia went on for miles, so how did they decide to keep going back?

Also how did they get back to the UK and then know it was worth going back to where they'd just explored?

Or did they take literally everything with them?

Theydidntwin · 19/04/2021 23:59

@thelegohooverer, my Dad was red/green colourblind. He had to pay more attention to the position of the light which was lit up than a non-colourblind person would, eg whether it was the top or the bottom one.

You could try this

But in my opinion it's one of the most misnamed books available!

BusLaneLady · 20/04/2021 00:01

In old coloured photos, how colourful was those days? Is 2021 more colourful (minus covid :D) ? I always used to think my grandma saw life in black & white in her youth but was just wondering how the 80's and 90s were in terms of colours? Slightly washed out? Dull? Did your vision get brighter after the millennium :D

Why is the last month of pregnancy approx. 9000 days long?

Tambourina · 20/04/2021 00:03

Such an interest thread!

My question is who made up swear words and why are they seen as rude?

Why are 'poo' and 'defecate' acceptable, but 'shit' and 'turd' considered vulgar?

No, there are many different versions.
Mamanyt · 20/04/2021 00:12

What those damned footsteps coming down my (empty) sidewalk in the wee early hours (2-4 AM) really are. They are quite loud, very distinct, and quite obviously the sound of someone walking in hard-soled shoes. It doesn't happen often, and it is always on hot, muggy summer nights, usually when there's a storm brewing. I've heard them probably a dozen times over the three years that I've been in this apartment, and they always make me uneasy. Yet another reason I prefer cold weather!

FruityPolos · 20/04/2021 00:13

@Buslanelady I always think this, I was a child in the 80s and always think the 70s had some weird yellow /washed out look. I think it's down to the look of films and TV from that era but I do wonder if things looked more dull in real life as well 😁

Smokeahontas · 20/04/2021 00:15

This is so morbid (sorry for shitting on the thread!), but what happens when you die. I’ve seen the videos / recollections of those who have died, say during a medical procedure / accident then come back to life.

FruityPolos · 20/04/2021 00:18

I have always wondered if you were really close to someone else's face could your eyes stick together? Eyeballs are sort of sticky so I always wonder. I know that's weird.

I used to try to get my DP to see what would happen if our eyes got close together but we always got too scared to keep our eyes open just in case they did stick. We are now responsible parents so have stopped trying to test this out 😁
