Would you say something?

A friend of mine regularly wears leggings (2-3 times a week) that are seriously not flattering. I suspect they are too small for her as they are very tight and you can see every inch of cellulite on her bum and thighs. She might as well be naked they are that exposing.

I dont want to hurt her feelings but I've been thinking I should say something to her. If we were Bff's I'd have said something by now but we are not super close. More casual mates. What would you do?

YABU - say nothing
YANBU - Tell her

You're not close friends say nothing

JoyOrbison · 19/04/2021 13:20

If its a good friend, and the leghings are the sort that are turning sheer diue to stretch / thin / poor material them yes, I would to spare their blushes!

user1493413286 · 19/04/2021 13:21

I think you’ll lose her as a friend if you say anything directly. You could try the route of talking about very tight leggings being unflattering or seeing “someone” with very tight leggings which were unflattering.

B33Fr33 · 19/04/2021 13:50

@user1493413286 oh god no don't do that! Just seal head on or don't mention it. No point in slipping in conversational knives. I bet you give smellies as gifts don't you?

B33Fr33 · 19/04/2021 13:51

*deal not seal

PotLucky · 19/04/2021 13:53

I would maybe say they were a bit see through but I certainly wouldn't mention anything about cellulite.

RaginSpice · 19/04/2021 14:01

Definitely tell her (just say they’re see through) but as pp said don’t mention cellulite

Candycane57 · 19/04/2021 14:11

At most maybe mention that you could see her underwear or something, do it as a girl code thing and try to cover her up maybe. She probably either doesn't realise or doesn't care but if she doesn't realise, she'll be grateful and if she doesn't care, she won't mind that you told her. I'd certainly want to be told if you could see my underwear, but saying you can see a part of her body like cellulite is just being nasty.

MorgeMooney · 19/04/2021 14:15

Am I your friend? Lay off my leggings, they're comfy Grin

Tbf I wear sweaty betty leggings, they're thick and not at all see through.

Womencanlift · 19/04/2021 14:15

Where are they wearing them? If it’s the school run or going a walk who cares. If it is somewhere that is a bit more dressed up then fair enough

I think a lot of people have turned a bit more casual in how they dress over the last year. But yes they need to actually fit

SmidgenofaPigeon · 19/04/2021 14:18

Yeah, say ‘oi Sandra you’ve got a bum and legs full of orange peel through your peasant-cheap leggings, they’re too small and you like a sausage bursting out of its skin. it’s offending my eyes! Only telling you for your own good like. Coffee or tea?’

I’m sure she’ll take that just fine and appreciate that you feel close enough to her to let her know.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 19/04/2021 14:19

Unless you're about to drip-feed that she's blind, I'm sure she's more than capable of using a mirror and can see what she looks like herself!

Bluntness100 · 19/04/2021 14:21

Wtf would you say? If she likes them that’s all that matters.

PinkCookie11 · 19/04/2021 14:21

If someone I wasn’t close to said it to me I’d be pissed 😂

BrumBoo · 19/04/2021 14:22

Unless you can see right up to what she had for breakfast, it's none of your business. Woman has cellulite, big deal.

PhatPhanny · 19/04/2021 14:22

I pukl people up in the street if they're having a clothing mishap.
My DC school is next to a fancy off and I have mentioned a few things to a couple of the girls there.

I walked home from school once with my skirt caught in my tights, showing everyone my backside, not one single person told me, I was so upset, I vowed to always tell someone if they were having a wardrobe malfunction or similar.

Happycat1212 · 19/04/2021 14:23

Don’t do as user1493413286 Said, she will know it’s about her and that’s really nasty when someone does that

Maggiesfarm · 19/04/2021 14:25

@AryaStarkWolf

You're not close friends say nothing
That's what I think.

If it makes you wince, see less of her.

BrumBoo · 19/04/2021 14:25

@PinkCookie11

If someone I wasn’t close to said it to me I’d be pissed 😂
I'd take a great deal of pleasure pointing out their physical flaws in return. I dont often answer idiots back in real life, but I'd not let something like that stand.

Really don’t do this. That’s worse. The passive aggressive approach.
PinkCookie11 · 19/04/2021 14:27

Yeah please don’t do what @user1493413286 suggests.
Just don’t say anything

PinkCookie11 · 19/04/2021 14:27

@BrumBoo me either! Just abit unnecessary

CustardySergeant · 19/04/2021 14:27

PhatPhanny "I pukl people up in the street if they're having a clothing mishap. My DC school is next to a fancy off and I have mentioned a few things to a couple of the girls there."

Are there a couple of typos in there? If not, what is "pukl" and what is a "fancy off".

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 19/04/2021 14:28

I wouldn’t.

However, in a professional setting my Mum brought it up with a staff member and I also had a similar private conversation from an employer (to all the women when the men weren’t around) that was more like,

“Jessica, I’m not sure if you are aware but your leggings are very see through and you can see everything/they leave very little to the imagination. I don’t want to embarrass you, I just didn’t know if you were aware of how they look from behind and I know if the shoe were on the other foot, I’d wish someone had told me so I could get some thicker ones or wear a longer top.”

In both cases there was no offence caused, but it was an employer/senior colleague so different dynamic.

Whatever you do don’t bring up cellulite to her. That’s an awful thing to say.

EileenGC · 19/04/2021 14:29

Don’t say anything unless you’re very close. It also depends where she’s wearing these leggings - school run, shops or a walk? I wouldn’t even notice. Board meeting with the CEO of the company? Maybe say something then.
