TikTok R*pe Situation

TW: Rape/Sexual Assult

Sadly a group of trolls on TikTok have made this consistent joke about April 24th becoming 'National Rape Day". It is unclear what their intentions with this joke are, however, please be careful on social media that day and be aware of this sick joke.

Here is an article on the situation: www.distractify.com/p/april-24th-tiktok

Please be sure that any young people you know who use tiktok know to report and block anything promoting this behavior. Stay safe.

Why do I need to be "aware" of this sick joke when you have stated it's a joke and it's unclear their intentions?

All you are doing is amplifying fear amongst women which is EXACTLY what they want.

This post would have died a day ago or so if it wasn't for folk like yourself.

Ginuwine · 19/04/2021 08:55

Also there is no "situation". There is a shitty post, and there is the predictable outrage, handwringing, and now increase awareness and fear amongst women that come the weekend they'll have to stay in or risk the threat of assault.

Great. We really are our worst enemies sometimes.

Okay thank you for sharing your view @Ginuwine

I thought it was important to mention sugar

You aren’t suggesting women dont leave the house just that children are made aware of what to do on tik tok when they see this sort of thing

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 19/04/2021 09:21

This stuff really is best ignored. I can take any day and make it up as a 'national' day but if no one listens it doesn't have a lot of clout

I believe it is as this is a key educational point that can be made with young boys. On just how quickly we went from the devastating situation with Sarah and the MeToo movement to men/boys making jokes like this. And just how harmful it really is. But no one has to do anything. I just think it's an important subject, especially as it's a topic of discussion amongst young people right now and we can use that to talk to young boys about the harm this does. But I think putting the information out there and it coming to nothing is more important than if we were oblivious to this and someone actually ends up getting hurt through this.

It is best ignored, these pillocks want to go viral. However also worth being aware it's likely to trend on social media, both due to MRAs/incels finding it entertaining and others tweeting about it in outrage. If someone is likely to find it triggering it's best to mute related search terms, or be off social media that day.

Really it would be best if no-one helped it trend, but let's face it, that's not going to happen (outrage tweeting achieves likes/exposure 🤷‍♀️)

CirclesWithinCircles · 19/04/2021 09:29

Oh it's you again in your self-appointed role of censoring the internet to save women. Very maciavellian. Stop publicising this and report to the police.

That's totally understandable and a valid point. I don't wish to dismiss that. However, I think we are better off knowing this situation is happening earlier on before it could possibly hurt someone. Like with the Momo challenge and other things that were just seeming harmless viral topics.

It has been reported to the police already thank you.

I don't think this is a new thing, it's been going for several years. It's like "Everyone Draw Mohammed Day" or "Steak and Blowjob Day" - ignore it and it will go away.

MedusasBadHairDay · 19/04/2021 09:48

The momo challenge was total bullshit that really didn't need to go viral. I'm not sure what harm was prevented by people being aware of that one. 🤔 Suspect more harm was done by people being told it was a big deal tbh

DuchessOfBuggerAll · 19/04/2021 09:49

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how stupid thing said somewhere becomes a big deal, while if everyone ignored it, as in didn't give it a publicity just quetly reported it, it would just do what lots of online things do. Dissapear into the "meh" abyss and never to return...

Exactly this.

It's more about the person's need to fervently report things - "hey! I've just seen something horrendous! We must get angry! Thank me later for being so caring!"

CirclesWithinCircles · 19/04/2021 11:22

The same poster was trying to get a Twitter account which supported women closed down by encouraging people to pile on. The Twitter account was owned by a mumsnet poster!

This particular poster seems to have nothing better to do than be on social media and report stuff, almost as if its a full time job for them.

TikTok - seriously, leave it to the kids, or the police if reported as a direct threat to identified individuals. OP - you are not the police.

mooonstone · 19/04/2021 11:28

Have you ever heard of the Streisand effect?

Sorry but I am early 20s and up to speed with pop culture. Absolutely no one knows about this random group as they’re irrelevant and have no traction. You’re acting like their posts will get millions of reposts and views when they would be lucky to get 1 view? No one is checking for them.

Why are you trying to draw attention to something that is largely irrelevant? The message is important but surely you know there are random trolls everywhere online? You don’t need to give them the attention they seek. How about you place your energy into contacting your MP to abolish sexism in real life?

mooonstone · 19/04/2021 11:29

This is why (some) old people shouldn’t use social media

These are all fabricated as no 'pile on' or any sort towards MumsNet. If people don't care about this situation then fine. However I find it important to make parents and those working with kids aware of these situations as we don't know what effect they could cause. I understand it might just be some silly boys having a joke, but even then I don't think this is something we should let slide. Obviously I hope nothing comes of this situation but I'd rather people be aware and warned in case anything does.

Because to young people this isn't. This is something parents and schools have heard about in discussion and it should be tackled.

Just to know this has drawn your attention so if your child or any children you work around discuss this you are able to intervene and educate them. Or for facilitators to see if these issues can be included in their work to help tackle this. Not just this on it's own but the whole nature and education needed especially for boys around rape and sexual assult.

This is why (some) old people shouldn’t use social media
Whatsapp limited how many people someone can foreard messages to. Jokes were that it was because of older users falling for stuff and sharing it hence bringing too much attention to it. My mum is one of the over sharers🤦 Her friend forwards EVERYTHING remotely "funny" or about covid to EVERYONE 😂
