What age/height would you let a child sleep on the top bunk?

Sensible child, not sharing room (bunks were bought back in the good old days when cousins could actually stay over).

Full 3ft singles, normal height bunks rather than mid sleeper etc.

What age would you let them sleep on top?

Probably 6.

Quornflakegirl · 18/04/2021 21:11

From age 6.

bunglebee · 18/04/2021 21:14

5 or 6, I'd say, depending on sensibleness of DC. My 6yo has just moved into a top bunk.

serin · 18/04/2021 21:16

6 or 7.

Foxhasbigsocks · 18/04/2021 21:16

Age 6

Insertfunnyname · 18/04/2021 21:17

6

FoxyTheFox · 18/04/2021 21:17

Around age 5-6 depending on how capable I thought they'd be at getting down the ladder during the night if needed.

greenfiish · 18/04/2021 21:17

I allowed mine at age 6/7 - seemed a really common age amongst friends too.

NisekoWhistler · 18/04/2021 21:18

We let ours when just over 4, he's ok.

SirSamuelVimes · 18/04/2021 21:18

DD was in hers at four. About to turn seven, no accidents so far. Sensible girl, rarely up in the night.

TheGriffle · 18/04/2021 21:18

My 3 year old had a mid sleeper and moved to a high sleeper (so similar height as a bunk I think?) around 5 or 6.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 18/04/2021 21:19

With a side guard & depending on the child and if they get up much in the night etc, from 4 (but I think the advice is 6) but I'd put a mattress on the floor until they're used to it

BettyOBarley · 18/04/2021 21:19

I've been looking at cabin beds recently and they all say over 6.

Flowers24 · 18/04/2021 21:20

6-7

Emmy93 · 18/04/2021 21:20

My son is 4 and has a high sleeper

ContessaVerde · 18/04/2021 21:20

I once they don’t fall out of or wet the bed.

THNG5 · 18/04/2021 21:25

My oldest was 3 when he went into a top bunk. He's always been a very sensible child and knows to call us if there's a problem (baby monitor in room). He's now 4 and a half and at the top of triple bunk beds. Unfortunately, space is an issue at the moment so needs must.

KurtWilde · 18/04/2021 21:27

Eldest was 4 when she went into top bunk, no issues.

gingganggooleywotsit · 18/04/2021 21:27

My son has been sleeping at the top in his cabin bed since age 4.5 no problems so far and it’s been a year.

Nextyearwillbefun · 18/04/2021 21:28

5

Mol1628 · 18/04/2021 21:30

5/6

BreatheAndFocus · 18/04/2021 21:52

6 or 7. I’d probably still put a mattress or cushions down for the first few nights though. I fell out of a top bunk as a child and it bloody hurt! I was asleep and only woke up when i hit the floor.

Notworking123 · 20/04/2021 01:11
  1. She's now 5.5 and far more likely to fall out now doing something daft than when she was a toddler and very proud of being so grown up as to be allowed to sleep up top.
Meatshake · 20/04/2021 07:16

My eldest has been in a bunk on holidays before, she's 4.

RatintheCat · 20/04/2021 07:48

My 5 year old currently sleeps at the top. He wasn't allowed until now as he gets up every night and is the child who will mess about but he's reached the point where I trust him to be sensible up there. He alternates weeks with my oldest who had the top until recently and went up there from about 6.
