Pooling money in a relationship

Supposing you were unmarried and no children but had moved in together.
Both worked full-time but one earned 20k and one earned 30k for instance?

If it were me I'd want the rent and bills etc. To be paid pro rata according to salary, so the higher earner paid more.

But do you think that all money should be pooled together, and that both should have the same disposable income and savings, even though one earns more?

50/50 theres a reason why 1 job pays a 1/3 more than the other they deserve the benefit for the shit that goes with higher pay .

Yep, this is what we did but we were madly in love and committed since the very start. Took 11 years before we got around to getting married but I never saw marriage as a big deal anyway.

No, rent 50-50, unless one partner is pushing for a more expensive place and volunteers to make up the difference..

Initially we had salaries go into our own accounts, then opened a joint and paid half of all bills into that, plus pro-rata extra for savings towards holidays etc.

Got married and switched it around so all salaries into the joint and we "pay" ourselves an allowance each month, the same amount each regardless of differences in wages.

My husband and I didn’t pool incomes until we bought a house together. Until then we paid for certain bills each. We early roughly the same amount and paid a similar amount in bills. The money leftover we could do what we please with.
It’s very different now we have a mortgage and 2 kids, there is no leftover money to start with Grin

No, but you’d need to thrash that out before you moved in together.

I agree with kisskiss

If the man earns more, it should be pro-rata - he should contribute a greater proportion of his salary - this is equality.

If the woman earns more it should be split 50/50 - this is equality.

Or more accurately, the way household expenses are allocated depends on the stage of the relationship, marital status in some circumstances, and whether there are children involved.
