Should long hair be tied back for food preparation

Scenario: a restaurant kitchen is being used by a third party to have cooking classes. Should participants of the class who have long hair be required to tie their hair back when preparing the food?
I've just been called a Karen ( apologies to anyone with this name, I hate this usage ) by the owner of the restaurant for agreeing on an FBgroup with someone who said hair should be up. He posted pictures of the class doing the prep of raw chicken and there was a lady with hair hanging down as she was chopping it up. He became aggressive in the tone of his comments and called me Karen. I hate this. It's an attempt to shut women down when they say something men dont like, in my opinion. Mysogyny in action if you will. Anyway, what do you think? His contention was that as it was a private cooking class he didn't have to specify long hair tied up. But if it's on his premises isn't he responsible for the hygiene practices?

I'm not a busybody. I just commented on a in photo and a bully of a proprietor couldn't handle a comment about long hair dangling over food being prepped in his kitchen during a cooking class. He esacalated it and was nasty and insulting. I dont allow men to bully me in real life or in virtual life. That's all there is to it.

Aka.
I'm not a busybody. I just happened to see a restaurant sharing something that a third party company was doing, decided that I didn't approve of the way an adult in a private cookery class was working so instead of scrolling on by because it has nothing to do with me (or the restaurant's food hygiene standards because it was a 3rd party who was using the space!), I simply had to comment in order to share my opinion with the world.

Nobody is defending the owner's response, but the more the thread goes on, the more you really do sound like a busybody.
Even now you seem incapable of understanding that both you AND the owner were unreasonable.

Oh go and brew a cup of sanctimonious tea, love.

You are both unreasonable and you sound like you have a complex. Do you have previous trauma in relation to males to own/run kitchens? Confused

Mollymalone123 · 19/04/2021 22:11

Yes the hair should have been up as they were using a commercial premises- hair won’t just drop directly into the bowl she’s using! Basic hygiene and I suspect he was stroppy because you pointed out the glaring obvious. He hasn’t really covered himself in glory by the way he responded to you and his attitude would certainly put me off his restaurant

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/04/2021 22:22

I don’t tie my hair back because tying it back makes it shed worse. I just make sure the ends are behind my back and it’s been fine. No hair in food in over 30 years. My mil is the same as you, insists on it, but that’s because she’s used to cooking in a semi-professional setting.

LolaSmiles · 20/04/2021 07:47

The irony of being called sanctimonious by someone who claims they aren't a busybody, but simply had to take to social media to complain that strangers in a private cookery class weren't t o her expectations, and who asks if they ABU whilst not liking anyone saying they are.
Grin

MolotovMocktail · 20/04/2021 08:51

If you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen OP 😉

murbblurb · 20/04/2021 09:02

Basic food hygiene to tie up hair when cooking, even in your own kitchen. These skanks probably don't wash hands either.

Don't ever eat in that restaurant!

Wellpark · 20/04/2021 09:06

Lolasmiles (smugly I'm thinking) you are coming across sanctimoniously. Try not to bang your big head on the doorframes today.

YANBU OP

And him calling you 'Karen' is totally unacceptable also

CandidaAlbicans2 · 20/04/2021 09:16

Whether or not hair should be tied up in a private cooking class is by the by. All OP did was agree with someone saying she felt it should be tied up when preparing food, that's all. But "cut price Gordon Ramsey" (love it 😆) got arsey instead of calmly and professionally explaining that no rules had been broken as it was a private class, and participants were preparing their own food. He's a total dickhead. If you own a business it's a really bad idea to show yourself up to be a twat on social media, even if you're in the right. Always remain professional in front of clients/prospective clients, and keep the ranting for in private.

Not smug, just amused.

Most people scroll on by on social media. On every local group or local business page there's always a few busybodies who need to add their 'expert' opinion on stuff that doesn't affect them.

CandidaAlbicans2
I agree that the owner showed himself in a bad light and shouldn't have said Karen as an insult.

The owner was unreasonable in his actions. Equally, the OP was unreasonable in using social media to complain about a stranger in a private cookery lesson. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

It's not by the by. It's precisely what the op was asking! She didn't ask if he was unreasonable in the way he acted. Her question, more than once, was should long hair be tied up when cooking, when it's a private cooking class on restaurant premises.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 20/04/2021 13:56

@PrelovedWithValue, my comment wasn't directed at anyone, not answering OP's question, just a comment 🙂

lazylinguist · 20/04/2021 16:42

He can post what he likes. And you can comment on what you like. But I don't understand why you are so bothered by the sight of a complete stranger cooking their own food without their hair tied up. It affects you in no way whatsoever.

If your extreme reaction to seeing a longhaired person cooking (heaving and feeling ill Confused) puts you off eating in that restaurant, then why not just vote with your feet and not go there? I can understand why the owner was a bit peed off tbh. I'm not defending his use of 'Karen' though.
