Should long hair be tied back for food preparation

Scenario: a restaurant kitchen is being used by a third party to have cooking classes. Should participants of the class who have long hair be required to tie their hair back when preparing the food?
I've just been called a Karen ( apologies to anyone with this name, I hate this usage ) by the owner of the restaurant for agreeing on an FBgroup with someone who said hair should be up. He posted pictures of the class doing the prep of raw chicken and there was a lady with hair hanging down as she was chopping it up. He became aggressive in the tone of his comments and called me Karen. I hate this. It's an attempt to shut women down when they say something men dont like, in my opinion. Mysogyny in action if you will. Anyway, what do you think? His contention was that as it was a private cooking class he didn't have to specify long hair tied up. But if it's on his premises isn't he responsible for the hygiene practices?

Even in a private class where people are eating their own food they should be being taught good hygiene So hair tied back and hands washed.

I do think culturally there is an issue with women not tying their hair back in situation that they really should for hygiene purposes I'm a scientist and the number of people who don't tie their hair back working in the lab drives me mad. When I was a young scientist I always had my hair up.

Plus I completely agree that Karen is an agist and misogynistic insult that should be called out, particularly since hedid it on a public forum.

LolaSmiles · 18/04/2021 19:08

It sounds like instead of minding your own business, you've waded in with someone else to needlessly put your pennies in.
There's no excuse for the Karen response from him, but I do understand why the owner might be thinking random people on social media who have nothing better to do than police what clients in a private cookery lesson do should probably get a life.

Thingsthatgo · 18/04/2021 19:12

I’m confused as to why you felt the need to say it? The people in the class are learning to prep their own food, not training to be chefs. They are not making food for you to eat. Surely it’s their own choice if they put their hair up.

EdgeOfACoin · 18/04/2021 19:13

The Karen insult was wrong and he shouldn't have used it.

I don't think long hair needs to be tied up for a private cooking class. I have long hair and don't get my hair in the food when I cook.

I understand why it's a professional requirement.

Did you reply pointing out your name isn't Karen?

YANBU Long hair should be tied back when preparing food.

Yanbu. I tie my hair back at home when I'm cooking.

redcandlelight · 18/04/2021 19:22

yanbu
hair in food is vile but also it could be h&s risk if operating appliances.

pinkearedcow · 18/04/2021 19:23

I always tie my hair back when cooking, it's yuk not to. Who wants hair in their food?

One thing that bugs me about the lovely Nigella's cooking shows is her hair dangling all over the place. You just know a strand will end up on the food at some point.

pinkearedcow · 18/04/2021 19:26

Oh, sorry OP you mentioned Nigella's hair. I should have RTFT.

Astella22 · 18/04/2021 19:26

You poked your nose in where it wasn’t wanted and he responded defensively which is not surprising. The Karen insult now that’s something which is indefensible IMO.

PrelovedWithValue · 18/04/2021 19:29

It's a class. For adults. Do you expect the person demonstrating to adults to treat them like children?

YABU.

If they were cooking for paying customers you might have a point, but then they'd probably have professional kitchen experience and know the standards required to cook for others.

abeanbaked · 18/04/2021 19:36

He's also probably pissed that he's trying to rebuild and maintain his livelihood after a particularly tough time due to covid and some people are dragging him down on SM. It was a private cooking class, they weren't cooking for the public.

scanning the above quickly, i misread the penultimate word as the male organ of generation.
which rather startled me in the context.

Now THAT really would be a talking point on Facebook Grin

Amdone123 · 18/04/2021 19:56

If he's trying to build his business up, great way to go about it. Not.
Fwiw, I agree wholeheartedly that long hair should be tied back when cooking. I love Masterchef but this drives me mad. It's horrible.

OliveToboogie · 18/04/2021 20:33

Basic food hygiene. Don't fancy eating his food. Grubby oink.

Did you even read the very first line?

Wow. I don't know anyone who cooks for themselves that uses a hairnet while doing it.

I don't think anyone at any cooking class one been to has done that either.

Wellpark · 18/04/2021 20:39

I think if he doesn't want feedback on basic hygiene being ignored on his premises he ought not to invite by posting photos of long haired participants in the cooking class. I get that people are trying to make a living and I wasn't out to trash his business. He did a good job of that himself going by the number of likes my comment about tying up hair. He got defensive and aggressive pretty quickly. I've worked in professional kitchens with men like Jim before. They are bullies and often pick on women and other men in junior positions. It's not a healthy working environment.

Haha men like HIM. Dont know who Jim is!

Yes up and preferably in a hairnet tbh. But, as it is a private cooking class he can't really demand they tie their hair up.

You weren't trying to trash his business, but took to Facebook to complain about the fact a client of a third party company didn't have their hair to your standards for a private cookery lesson.

His response was unwarranted, but I can see why he'd be defensive. Unfortunately part of having small business now also involves having to have an appropriate way of dealing with random people when they feel the need to have their say on social media about services and products they aren't using.

Wellpark · 18/04/2021 22:59

Yes it does and the thing to do is take comments on board and respond professionall and appropriately. Not get aggressive and insulting. Or perhaps think twice before posting photos of long hair dangling over raw chicken being prepared on your premises when you're in the restaurant business.
