My DD (4) has just got another UTI. The last time she had one she was really poorly, fever sickness ect, however this time the only symptom was needing to go to the toilet a lot. Every time she went she was still having quite a big wee. I took her to the drs and they confirmed and put her on antibiotics. That was on Friday.
Since yesterday she has been needing the toilet a lot more, she keeps crying saying it's coming right then and there so it's a rush to get her to the toilet, but when she goes she's having to push and it's only a couple of drips that come out. She hasn't done a proper wee since yesterday morning. Do you think I need to take her back to the gp tomorrow or does she need something more urgent? She seems absolutely fine in her self otherwise

Poor little sausage.
I felt really crap when I last had a UTI a few months ago.
Nitrofurantoin sorted me.

You can also get barley water squash which legend / mythology says helps to soothe. Aldi do nice ones. The pear one is delish.

ruthieness · 18/04/2021 18:53

I found drinking a glass water with a small teaspoon of bicarb of soda in it changes the acid level of the urine so not as stingy but it sure tastes yucky!!!

SeaToSki · 18/04/2021 18:55

Did I read right that she hasnt peed much in terms of quantity in the last 24hr despite drinking normally and is feeling pressure and wants to go?

If so, that is a big problem. Call the doctors back and tell them specifically about that. If she cant pee, and is drinking normally, her bladder might rupture. She needs to be seen very soon/immdiately if this is the case

Catlitter1 · 18/04/2021 18:55

Also let her know it’s ok to pee in the bath if it helps. I don’t know why but my daughter often felt the urge with a uti and felt better after.

Maray1967 · 18/04/2021 18:58

I had three of these in the space of a few weeks a couple of years ago - never had them before. That feeling of constantly needing to go but only passing a few drops - awful. Nurse told me to make sure I’d fully emptied bladder every time. She said that rushing off the loo is thought to be a cause as some urine stays in the bladder. She told me to rock backwards and forwards while sitting on the loo for a few seconds when you think you’ve finished before you wipe to try to empty bladder completely. And yes, always wipe front to back. I hope better antibiotics do the trick soon.

BashfulClam · 18/04/2021 19:02

@Lubiluxe

It could be cystitis? I am prone to it and have been since I was a little girl. Especially the not being able to pee but needing to. It's a common misconception that cystitis is from sex but it really isn't.
That’s is true as I got it a few times as a child. I got it again at 19 when I first became sexually active.
BashfulClam · 18/04/2021 19:03

@Maray1967 I was told to count slowly to 8 to help make sure my bladder was fully voided.

This was my worry earlier when I posted. I rang 111 and told them all the symptoms but they said because she was acting normally in herself and didn't have a temp or anything that I didn't need to worry, they said speak to my go tomorrow. She did get me to press her stomach and my dd didn't say it was painful at all. However since then she has done one bigger pee this afternoon, so I'm feeling a bit more relieved now

If she's not going then toxns are building up in her kidneys and that's dangerous. First thing they tell you is if their not going you need them checked over as either dehydration or risk of kidneys being damaged.

AlexaNeverListens · 18/04/2021 19:10

If you think your DD is prone to UTIs (I am and they're the worst) I'd really strongly advise you to get some dip testing sticks from Amazon. You can quickly see whether she has an infection and/or whether the antibiotics are working.
The only antibiotic that works for me is Nitrofurantoin.
Poor little thing, my DD suffers too. They really are horrible :(

Definitely not dehydration as I've been giving her lots and lots of fluids. I'm going to be calling the gp first thing and see if they can see her in person to check her stomach ect

Agreed it could be cystitis, I'm a regular sufferer. But is not a misconception that sex causes cystitis..my cystitis has only ever been caused by sex and comes on 24 hours after. But it can also be triggered by other things obviously

DishingOutDone · 18/04/2021 19:26

Let her wee in the bath always helped my DDs I know you don’t want to encourage it but say oh it’s just cos you are poorly the water will help you.

Maray1967 · 18/04/2021 19:28

If she’s done a bigger wee that sounds as though the antibiotics are starting to work and she should be beginning to feel more comfortable but I’d seek advice tomorrow.
PP said something similar to the advice I had - counting when she thinks she’s finished to try to make sure the bladder is empty. This might help her in future.

SeaToSki · 18/04/2021 19:32

If you are giving her lots of fluids, please watch her super carefully and see of you can get her to wee ina potty and measure how much is coming out (measure what you are putting in too). It can get very serious very quickly and her tummy not hurting isnt diagnostic.

Thank you I will definitely be encouraging her to try the rocking back and forth to make sure she has finished

Funnily enough that's exactly what I decided to try on the time that she did a bit of a bigger wee. I've asked her to keep doing her wees in the potty so that I can see how much she is actually going, then when I speak to the dr tomorrow I will be able to give them a bit more precise info

@SeaToSki I'm also letting her sleep in my bed tonight so I can keep a close eye on her as your comment has worried me a little because I didn't know that could happen to the bladder

they will check on a scan her kidneys as its unusual, my boys both had reflux of the kidneys where the valve at the bottom of the tube wasnt working so pee would go from the bladder to the kidney, it sounded dramatic but all it ment was they had to stay on a daily low dose of trimethprim to keep the infections away till they were older. it sounds like they are looking into why your DD is getting the infections which is good, but like others say, keep her fluids up as she might try and stop drinking if she knows it will make her need to pee. poor lamb.

That does sound quite scary but glad your boys are ok. Yes I'm glad they will look in to it as this is the second one she has had in 3 months. I'm trying to encourage her to keep a bottle of water with her all the time so she can keep taking drinks from it when she wants to

Glad you got back to dr.my daughter had recurring Utis at this age for almost 3 years- we did not use soap- she had to stand up in shower to wash hair so she never sat in a soapy water. Let her dry naturally etc- after a few scans they said she had a kink in the urethra and as she grew it would straighten out and urine couldn’t then ‘pool’ in the tube and cause infection- it was a nightmare and she went through so many antibiotics she was eventually on a prophylactic dose for a year. Always act on worsening symptoms if your Dd isn’t getting better after a couple of days on antibiotics- my dd eventually ended in hospital with kidney infection-drs always take children with Uti seriously so never worry about phoning as soon as you think there’s an issue. My daughter was worst case scenario and I’m sure your dd will bounce back.Just to let you know it is important to call drs in these circumstances. It’s miserable for them

Thank you for your advice, I hope your daughter is better now. I'm hoping that we get the appointment for the scans soon so that we know what is going on. I am definitely going back to the dr tomorrow, I feel like I hate wasting their time when there is so much going on with the world but I just really don't want it to go to her kidneys

When I was a child I had repeated UTIs between the ages of 4 and 6 that resulted in me being hospitalised and then having weekly follow up appointments for 2 years. I'm now in my 50s and have never had a UTI as an adult and although I was diagnosed as a child as having kidney scarring, my kidneys are functioning normally. I just wanted to give a positive story. But do keep taking her back.

Does she get them persistently. If she has had UTI with fever GP is supposed to refer her to a paediatric urologist to get it checked out. If she is getting them persistently then please insist she gets referred.
