Aibu - would you say something

I feel like an arse posting this, and am probably being judgy. However here’s the story.

I constantly see a friend of mine posting on Facebook her feeding both her dog and her grandchild completely inappropriate food,

Example - dog - full English breakfast including buttered bread
Granddaughter (less than 1) mc Donald’s breakfast - a whole one - muffin plus hash browns Etc.

I’d never make a negative comment publicly on a post but have seen others quite kindly make hints about the dog (like your vet will tell you off etc).

Would you (privately) say something?

I think they probably know already

MiddleClassProblem · 18/04/2021 09:40

How exactly do you think that conversation would go?

Allwokedup · 18/04/2021 09:40

Stay out of it. It won’t end well for you.

Honestly I don’t think they do. Well not when it comes to the dog anyways. The GD I don’t know. I mean a sausage McMuffin muffin for a less than one year old must be pretty obvious it’s not great.

Fair point. I’d not be all “you can’t do that”. Am thinking more along the lines of something more subtle,

No it is absolutely not your place to say anything!

Macncheeseballs · 18/04/2021 09:45

Macdonalds breakfasts are awesome, sausage and egg mcmuffin is basically a sausage and egg sandwich, what's wrong with that every now and then?

Angrypregnantlady · 18/04/2021 09:46

They're feeding unhealthy food. They know the food isn't healthy. It's not like seeing someone feeding their dog grapes, some people don't know dogs can't have grapes.
The parent of the child must be seeing the same thing on Facebook you are, if they're not saying anything then it's really not your place to.

Is the dog overweight? If not, then stay out of it, dogs getting a nice treat and is clearly getting enough exercise to burn it off.

Isaidachangewoulddoyougood · 18/04/2021 09:46

Fair enough pretty unanimous. I’ll keep quiet.
It was the dog thing I was planning on tackling tbf (the GD is way more sensitive) as I think she’s going to feed it into an early grave.

Yes dog is overweight and it’s not exactly known for being a healthy breed. It’s a small sized dog - not like a Labrador,
I’m talking pictures at least once a week of the dog eating a full human dinner - burger chips and beans, full English breakfast with bread, spaghetti bolognese etc.

But I think everyone’s right - I shall stay out of it.

For a baby who’s under one?! There is 943.8 mg of sodium in a sausage and egg McMuffin, which is the entire RDA for a baby (and that’s before you add in the hash brown and whatever else she eats that day).

The salt is the difference. I’m not against McDonalds for kids - I think it’s a decent treat - it’s the age. I’d have thought (maybe wrongly) that a full McDonald breakfast for a 10 month old was borderline dangerous.
OP posts:
RobertaSloth · 18/04/2021 09:54

OP is a hard situation - what she’s doing is so bad for both dog and child and could cause very serious illness, so I completely understand why you feel compelled to say something. But I agree with PPs that it’s unlikely to help. She would probably be too defensive to accept what you say. Food can such an emotive topic. But that poor pup and baby, they’re the ones paying the price.

picklemewalnuts · 18/04/2021 09:57

A friend's sister was feeding her baby instant mash with instant gravy. The boy seems fine now. I mean, not what I'd want to wean mine on, but honestly, dogs and people have managed to survive on crap food since forever.

Isaidachangewoulddoyougood · 18/04/2021 09:58

Thanks @RobertaSloth that’s exactly it. This isn’t me being “oh how could you possibly feed a kid cereal think of the sugar!

I think both are potentially dangerous and I honestly don’t think she realises. She’s never had a clue around food - at all. And with the dog when I asked about some of the issues with the breed she was completely unaware that any of them were a thing.

OP posts:
Owwlie · 18/04/2021 10:01

Surely a 10 month old doesn’t actually eat it all though? My DD is just 1 and if I gave her that I can’t imagine she’d eat it, she still chucks most of her food around. Is the grandmother just taking a photos of it in front of her for social media maybe?

Isaidachangewoulddoyougood · 18/04/2021 10:04

@Owwlie fair point. The photo is it half eaten but that of course may not tell the story.
Honestly it’s the dog I was more concerned about not because I’m more concerned about a dog than a baby, but because it is DG - so it’s nit like she’s fully in charge of the her diet.

How is a McDonald's breakfast "dangerous "?

nokidshere · 18/04/2021 10:20

It depends what you mean by friend. If a 'real life' friend was posting pictures I would either post or say in person 'Bloodyhell Jane, are you trying to kill that poor dog with all that food' or something similar.

If it were a distant friend who I just have on fb I'd probably leave it to her 'real' friends to say something.

Isaidachangewoulddoyougood · 18/04/2021 10:25

@nokidshere I think I could say that - it’s a proper friend. The GC I think I need to keep quiet.

OP posts:

@LaceyBetty for a less than one year old? It’s the salt. It can quite literally damage their kidneys.

OP posts:
JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/04/2021 10:28

@LaceyBetty it's the amount of salt in the McDonald's that's the problem. A baby's kidneys can't cope with salt. Giving a baby too much salt can permanently damage their kidneys. That's why the advise is not to give a baby any salt.

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 10:29
@LaceyBetty for a less than one year old? It’s the salt. It can quite literally damage their kidneys.
No, one McDonald's breakfast given by a grandparent will not harm their kidneys. No way.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/04/2021 10:29

Sorry - cross posted!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 18/04/2021 10:30

@LaceyBetty it looks like this person is giving a baby McDonald's on a regular basis.
