It's too pointy to be a mouse dropping.

Doesn't look anything like wild rice or unhusked rice. Are pps looking at the same google images as me.... looks like mouse droppings

Try covering it with a few drops of water. If it's mouse poo, the water should discolour after a few minutes and the poo will be soft.

Anyway, you might be seeing a few more mouse droppings in your food now if this article is to be believed...

Rice that got damaged and shrunk.

dh from Pakistan always wash & rinse rice first regardless - often get stones gritty mud husks & etc - it is harvested from a field after all
As long as it doesn't move or wriggle & is white -that's a whole different thing

That looks like the droppings left by DS's pet rat. Maybe it is unhusked rice but I wouldn't take a chance. I'd definitely bin it.

You do sometimes find a grain or two of black or brown rice in a bag. It just hasn't been polished sufficiently, a bit of the outer coat has been left. Don't worry, it's not a mouse dropping!

@Gobbeldegook

Looks too small for mouse poop. When I had mice in a house the poops were bigger than a grain of rice, not much bigger but not that small

Are you sure you didn't have rats?

Looking online it seems mouse poo is often pointy at the end and not straigh, can be curved, ..... can be as your sample but more likely to be rice

You should always wash (rinse thoroughly) your rice. I'm just saying.

Rice, surely?

Report
CrazyHorse · 17/04/2021 15:47

Surely everyone rinses rice first? Anyway, if the bag was sealed it's nothing from your house. Is rice bagged up in the UK? Who knows where the rice has been between the field and your kitchen (well somebody will!) I've no idea, but whatever it is, if you rinse the rice then boil it, you'll be fine.

I did find maggots in rice once when I was young, not long after I'd left home I only discovered them when the rice was cooking and they floated. I just picked them out and still ate the rice. Hmm For some reason I thought it was normal. When I told my very unfussy mother she was horrified Grin

There are children in third world countries who are sent out to pick up stray grains of rice off the street.

Throw the black bit away, rinse the rest before you use it and get a bloody grip.

Consensus here is mouse poo or chrysalis but didn't get anyone to do a taste test! ... will take a closer look later on. We had wraps for lunch instead Wink definitely wasn't from my kitchen as I just opened the bag

A bit Hmm at the idea of comparing the bag of rice I bought from the shop yesterday with third world food shortages tho!!

Another vote for mouse poo (we have pet mice so I see enough of them)!

Report
Gobbeldegook · 17/04/2021 16:12

@QueenStromba definitely mice. I stayed up every night to to a stake out to see where they were getting in. Definitely house mice.
Rotten. I moved out at the earliest opportunity.

The consensus was that it was unhusked rice.

I'd guess unhusked rice too. Try and cut it- if you can't then it's rice. If you can...

It's small and black, not like the unhusked rice on Google images when I search! It was in a bag of white basmati. Will give it a thorough check over this evening 🧐

Put it in water - rice would remain the same and poop would squish

Reminds me of a few weeks ago when I opened some flour and found weevils in it - vile!! Needless to say it went in the bin and I used plain flour with baking powder 🤪

When and where did you buy it, OP? Is it worth taking it back to the shop?
