Why drag out a thread about what this suspicious thing in your rice? As someone mentioned in one of the first comments, have a look to see whether it’s soft or hard. If it’s hard it’s likely to be a husk (most likely option) if not it’s something else. I’m assuming you cook your rice in boiling water for at least 10 minutes so I don’t really see what the problem is here 🤷🏻‍♀️ Tbh it seems a little bit bonkers to me to start a thread in MN about what potentially is a grain of rice.

If you take it back to the shop (assuming it's a large supermarket) they can send it to the manufacturer for testing. I worked for a large retailer and that's what we did for any foreign bodies and a report will be produced detailing what it is.

@CrazyHorse

I did find maggots in rice once when I was young, not long after I'd left home I only discovered them when the rice was cooking and they floated. I just picked them out and still ate the rice. Hmm For some reason I thought it was normal. When I told my very unfussy mother she was horrified Grin

Lol maggots are the reason why rice is soaked in Asian countries before being cooked. Even washing doesn’t always remove them.

Oh ffs that’s rice husk or grit. But the risk of weevils or insects are a reason why people from countries where they know what to do with rice pick rice before washing it 7 times and soaking it. If you get insects don’t throw out your rice - you need to take it out of the bag, pick it, and then transfer into an airtight glass or steel container.

I once had a packet of my very favourite chicken and tarragon cup a soup and it has a freeze dried spider in it - big spider - I realised when it was in my mouth 😱🤮

Not likely to be maggots as much but pantry moths larvae which look like maggots (but become moths)

They lay eggs though microscopic holes in the plastic packaging (in the supermarket or while they are processed)

When and where did you buy it, OP? Is it worth taking it back to the shop?

Report
custardbear · 17/04/2021 16:44

Put it in water - rice would remain the same and poop would squish

Reminds me of a few weeks ago when I opened some flour and found weevils in it - vile!! Needless to say it went in the bin and I used plain flour with baking powder 🤪

It's small and black, not like the unhusked rice on Google images when I search! It was in a bag of white basmati. Will give it a thorough check over this evening 🧐

I'd guess unhusked rice too. Try and cut it- if you can't then it's rice. If you can...

@Changinglunchplans

Consensus here is mouse poo or chrysalis but didn't get anyone to do a taste test! ... will take a closer look later on. We had wraps for lunch instead Wink definitely wasn't from my kitchen as I just opened the bag

The consensus was that it was unhusked rice.

@QueenStromba definitely mice. I stayed up every night to to a stake out to see where they were getting in. Definitely house mice.
Rotten. I moved out at the earliest opportunity.

Another vote for mouse poo (we have pet mice so I see enough of them)!

There are children in third world countries who are sent out to pick up stray grains of rice off the street.

Throw the black bit away, rinse the rest before you use it and get a bloody grip.

Surely everyone rinses rice first? Anyway, if the bag was sealed it's nothing from your house. Is rice bagged up in the UK? Who knows where the rice has been between the field and your kitchen (well somebody will!) I've no idea, but whatever it is, if you rinse the rice then boil it, you'll be fine.

You should always wash (rinse thoroughly) your rice. I'm just saying.
