@grumpygiraffe there is lots of sport on before and after the funeral

LazyDaisy22 · 17/04/2021 10:17

No, I feel no need to hold a minute’s silence.

ineedaholidaynow · 17/04/2021 10:18

@peak2021 what is the brother doing?

FrankButchersDickieBow · 17/04/2021 10:21

No. Because I don't care.

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2021 10:23

I hope the staff in shops don’t get yelled at for stopping serving for a minute. ☹️

BiteyShark · 17/04/2021 10:23

No.

His life, like the Queens, is fascinating and I have no issue with us having a RF but I don't like enforced public displays like this. If at an event I would observe the silence but at home no I won't.

C130 · 17/04/2021 10:25

No

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/04/2021 10:27

No. I never met the man and he made no impact on my life. He did his duty and I respect him for that. His death isn’t more important to me than many others who have touched my life.

I strongly support the silence on 11/11 as we should all reflect on the reality of war and the costs it brings.

Ohnomoreno · 17/04/2021 10:29

How many more reasons are going to be created for a minute's silence. At least Quakers do it properly!

Vintagevixen · 17/04/2021 10:29

No.

I might have my own private one for Paul Ritter and Helen McCrory though - those saddened me a million times more than Prince Phillip.

Megasaurus · 17/04/2021 10:37

@ShirleyPhallus

The pub will hold a minutes silence.

ALL pubs will be holding a minute’s silence??

What?!

Womencanlift · 17/04/2021 10:40

Yes I will be. I know people have very decisive feelings about the Royal Family but personally I will be watching.

Livingtothefull · 17/04/2021 10:43

No way I'm afraid. TBH I think it is pretty crass to demand a minute's silence for this after what has happened to us over the last year. More than 127,000 people dead, most of them with years of life and their futures ahead of them - and we are expected to take part in this. Not to mention the many many others who have died, much younger than the Duke - Helen McCrory springs to mind.

We are not even being invited to join in if we wish - it is reported in the BBC as 'a minute's silence will be held nationwide, in memory of the duke'.

Believe me I don't enjoy feeling like this on the day of someone's funeral - but there it is.

ComDummings · 17/04/2021 10:44

Nah

You might not have recieved an 'invite' to join, but it's not been made compulsory afaik Hmm
Sirzy · 17/04/2021 10:47

I will be watching with DS who is history obsessed and royal family obsessed so I don’t have a choice in the matter

ElizabethTudor · 17/04/2021 10:48

Yes

VestaTilley · 17/04/2021 10:48

Yes. He served our country and our Queen for over 70 years; I consider it the least we can do. And I’m not a monarchist.

I find all the sneering “no, I didn’t know him/don’t care” posts downright disrespectful actually. It speaks volumes about the priorities of the people of this country today.

I’ve got a toddler so if I can’t respectfully maintain a silence at 3pm and watch the funeral then I will do so later on.

We’ve all suffered losses and heartbreak in one form or another over our lives, especially this year; the silence gives us all a chance to come together as a country and remember them all, which I for one welcome.

GirlsBlouse17 · 17/04/2021 10:50

Yes

Spidey66 · 17/04/2021 10:52

A 99 year old priveleged man who had nothing to do with me dies.

No, I'm not observing a minutes silence.

Isaidnope · 17/04/2021 10:54

Didn’t realise this was a thing but no, I won’t.

He was almost 100 and lived an incredibly privileged life. It was his time.

TunstallTansy · 17/04/2021 10:57

@Vintagevixen

No.

I came on to say this exactly.

Arbadacarba · 17/04/2021 10:58

No. I'm sorry for the Queen's loss (and that of his wider family and friends), but I don't feel a one minute's silence is appropriate. Philip lived to a very good age, enjoyed good health for most of it and also enjoyed privilege which most of us could only dream of. Of course his loved ones are grieving, but I don't think there is any need for wider mourning.

Livingtothefull · 17/04/2021 10:59

Of course people cannot be compelled to take part so to that extent it is not compulsory. But it is definitely being reported as a national minute's silence as if it is a foregone conclusion we will all take part. Which I personally resent.

If it was being presented as an invitation for anyone who wished to take part, it would be totally different.

I am not a monarchist but mean no disrespect. It is not that I don't care about the Duke's memory - just that there are so so many people whose passing I care about too.

rainbowthoughts · 17/04/2021 10:59

@ShirleyPhallus

ALL pubs will be holding a minute’s silence??

I would expect so. It's a national thing and most businesses do observe such things.
