AIBU?

To think £17 is too much...

... to charge to cut a 3yr old boy’s hair?

I try to support small, local business. I understand why sometimes this means paying more. But this is a trim/tidy up for a child with short hair.

I went to a chain of barbers instead. Paid £7 and it took no longer then 10 minutes. As it happens I have 2 DC so the saving was actually £20.

What do others think?

YABU - pay more to support local if you can afford it.
YANBU - not many people would pay that.

The barber charges £7 here and thats for a full boys mop.

At that price, I wonder if they’re actively discouraging children? Maybe they want to pitch a more upmarket/adult type vibe.

I used to pay £5 at the local hair dresser when my son was about 4, now he's 7 I take him to the barber who does a great job and it's £10.

£17 is a rip off.

@AnnaSW1

It's £30 here

Wow, now that’s a lot.

Where I live there is a small parade of shops. I need to get a bus to the next town to get to a barbers. I’d rather support my local shops but felt £17 was too expensive.

To those saying use clippers, I have been while they have been shut but it really needed a tidy up by someone who knows what they are doing.

It was looking a lot like a cactus.

Yes that is far too much especially for such a young child. YANBU

If you don’t think it’s worth the price, don’t do it. In my opinion, that can never be unreasonable: you shouldn’t spend more than you want to.

Little boys haircut this morning.

I paid £8 for my 11 year olds hair cut yesterday. £17 is definitely excessive for a child’s cut but I don’t think I’d worry too much about it atm as hairdressers and barbers do need to recoup some money from the past year. Prices will probably even out in a few months.

Rip off. Don’t use them, and the drop in trade will make them rethink prices. Use a business who doesn’t want to squeeze a customer dry. Even if you are using a chain, it will be somebody local working there, putting money back into the local economy.

It means they don't want to do kids haircuts so hope that you take your child somewhere else.

I went to a local business the other day, I normally get what i want from a chain, but thought, no, i will support local business instead, went into the shop, told them what i wanted, went into detail (it was a present), gave them 24 hours notice.

Turned up the next day to collect at the time arranged, they had forgot my order. I was not impressed as i had to hang around for them to finish it. I was using my lunch hour from work so i had to work over to make up the time.

Product was ok, it just felt abit rushed.

I decided to use a local milkman over lockdown, he was knocking on doors and asking for business, i knew it was going to be more expensive but i didnt mind that to support local business. But the milk goes off really quickly and sometimes we have had the carton bashed and squashed and when opened half the milk was missing (it was still sealed) so i am not very impressed.

Will stick to large chains in future.

£17 for a three year old is ridiculous, I pay £8 each for my boys and I think it’s £13 for my DH.

YANBU. DP had a similar issue - he always went to the local barber. A few years back he decided to start shaving his head and went to the barber for his fade every few weeks but the barber was still charging £30 (what he used to pay when he had much longer hair) for what now took about 10 minutes. So sadly he had to find elsewhere and now gets it done for about a tenner.

I pay £15 for my boys haircuts but it's a kids hairdressers with iPads and loads of toys... they are very patient and my boys adore the woman who cuts their hair. She has done it since they were babies and they don't want to change.

We have a small local business that specialises in Children's haircuts. They have an ipad for them to watch and you can sit in a car shaped seat if you wish.
Prices on their website:
Age 2 & under £13
Age 3-5 £15
Age 6-10 £17
@halcyondays no, this is the only hairdresser that is local to us. I had to get the bus to go to the barbers. I would rather have stayed local but I think £17 is a lot.

As it happened, it was the first time my DC have been on the bus this year and were actually super excited by the trip so it worked out well. I just wonder how the business will survive when they charge so much.
How much did the bus fare cost?

Where I am, it would be £3.10/£4.65 maximum for a day.

Where DP's from it would be £10.50 for him and more for two children.

My son used to go to the barber and it cost £7 but I don’t like the way they cut his hair, so I went to the one with the cars and iPads abs they do a better cut so I’m happy to pay £17 for a better cut.

Just sounds like a business that doesn’t particularly want to do kids/offer kids a discount just because they’re a kid. Can be a perfectly reasonable business model.

Our local barbers all have days and times when children are charged less. I'd ask about that next time. I pay £15 but my son is a teen who gets the age 12-16 discount if he goes Monday to Thursday. Otherwise it's £20 like adult men which is fair enough since his head is adult sized.

My ds goes to my hairdresser to get his hair cut as its long and the barber just wants to cut it all off. It costs about £10. The barber charges £5/£6 for a child cut
