To put a greenhouse on the drive

MaryIsA · 16/04/2021 07:50

Garden is fairly small. I could tuck the greenhouse behind the garage....or have a lovely big greenhouse in front of it. Which gets sun all day with shade at the height of the day.

The garage isn’t big enough for a car to fit in, but is double length and full of junk.

I really want to knock it down for more garden but is this a reasonable compromise?

Love the diagram

NeedToKnow101 · 16/04/2021 09:18

Excellent diagram skills OP!

Chasingsquirrels · 16/04/2021 09:19

Based on the diagram I'd have no issue whatsoever with that.
Your neighbours wouldn't even notice it and it's far enough back that I wouldn't be worried about vandalism (unless it's a really bad area).

KirstenBlest · 16/04/2021 09:20

Brilliant diagram. Love the happy little dog. Is the cat yours and is it a happy cat?

Whitney168 · 16/04/2021 09:23

Absolutely fine, particularly with a bit of screening.

Is your cat quite well? It doesn't seem to move much ... LOL.

Tickly · 16/04/2021 09:23

I would. Check planning regs because you do sometimes need permission for permanent structures. Otherwise I would crack on. It's your land and you're presumably growing food which is good for the planet. I plan to add food plants to our front garden when it's redone soon.

MaryIsA · 16/04/2021 09:27

neigbour's slightly grumpy cat. He's old and was put out by our getting a puppy in what he saw as his garden.

It's not an area known for vandalism or theft. And there's a large window over looking the spot for potential greenhouse to deter anyone.

another reasons to have it there is to improve the view from that window which is currently a drive and very boring large tall hedge.

I'd love to knock down garage but anyone I say that to says not to - they are valuable.

Thanks. I have a slightly grumpy cat. He's old too.
I also have a greenhouse, in which DCat likes to sleep on sunny days. He moves about during the day, and it under the potting bench if it gets hot.

I’d like our neighbour’s grumpy cat in the greenhouse. He’d add style.

Excellent diagram 👏🏻 are you thinking a proper glass one or a plastic one?

TabooNCoke · 16/04/2021 13:12

Why not, you see them on corner plots and in front gardens. You can always dismantle it and move it.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 16/04/2021 13:12

You aren't allowed to put just anything in your driveway, you have to check with planning.

SpnBaby1967 · 16/04/2021 13:15

We're not allowed structures on our front gardens, you should check your covenants.

IliveonCoffee · 16/04/2021 13:16

It looks good...but would the new fence location not block the light to the green house, which is the main reason for putting it in front rather then the side?

Assuming you don't knock down the garage, the greenhouse is penned in on all sides.

dudsville · 16/04/2021 13:17

Your diagram is great. I think you could host mn tutorials.

Also I think it's a fine idea. In my neighbourhood there's a street where the bulk of the sun is in the front gardens - they do all sorts, I think it's nice.

MaryIsA · 16/04/2021 13:23

It would have to be a low fence in front of the greenhouse to get the sun in the morning. Which the happy little dog would spend all day peering over woofing at the neighborhood.

Nothing in covenants, and nothing in planning about greenhouses, whether in front garden or not I had to check for a previous house.

FoxgloveBee · 16/04/2021 13:24

I think that's totally fine and it'll look lovely too (not that it's your neighbours business whether you have a garage or a greenhouse). Good luck and good diagram!

LemonViolet · 16/04/2021 13:31

What about converting the garage into a bespoke greenhouse?

I follow a YouTube channel called Yorkshire Kris (exotic style gardening) and he did this, the garage already had large windows on 2 sides I think, he took the roof off and replaced it with polycarbonate, painted the inside white and it looks great on videos at least.

MaryIsA · 17/04/2021 07:04

@LemonViolet that’s amazing. I’m off down a rabbit hole googling garage conversions now. Thank you!

LakieLady · 17/04/2021 07:14

If you fence off the section of the drive that runs down the side of the house, it's no longer a drive but part of the garden, so I think it's fine.

But I'm also liking the idea of converting the garage.

Top diagram, too, best I've seen for a while. Grin

billy1966 · 17/04/2021 08:22

@pickingdaisies

Now that's a proper diagram, the cat on the path is the sort of detail I crave. The greenhouse would actually tuck in quite nicely there especially if it's behind a sturdy fence.
🤣 I have found myself grading the diagrams and mentally looking for one now too. So funny.

Great idea.
You will love your Green house. Go for the largest you can fit.
They are so useful for pottering in.

But then OP would have to find somewhere else to store the stuff currently in the garage?
NewPapaGuinea · 17/04/2021 09:26

Will probably need planning permission. Will be a juicy target for drive by stonings.

Tinkling · 17/04/2021 09:26

You have exactly the same set up as me from your diagram, although your front garden is also driveway for us!

Personally I’d clear out and demolish the garage. We have recently cleared ours and converted it into a cinema room so believe me, the crap can go somewhere.

Tinkling · 17/04/2021 09:26

P.S we kept the front third of the garage for storage and do also have a small workshop behind it so didn’t lose all of our storage.
