I know IABU asking food related questions in AIBU 😂 But I'm meal planning and seriously stuck for inspo. Need ideas for dinners that are circa 500-600 cals per portion. No restrictions on pasta or rice. I've tried youtube but it's all pompous faffy artichoke heart this and that. I just want good old fashioned filling food please!

Can't help because I'm not allowed rice or pasta! If you are that must mean Slimming World does it?

FuzzyPuffling · 15/04/2021 20:46

The Hairy Bikers chicken tikka masala. It is really lovely.

Daria32 · 15/04/2021 20:46

The Hairy Bikers low cal recipe book is really good! I love their chicken and chorizo tray bake. Have a google for some of their recipes

Coldilox · 15/04/2021 20:46

Try the Pinch of Nom cookbooks (and the website has a decent amount of recipes too).

Daria32 · 15/04/2021 20:46

@FuzzyPuffling snap! 😂

FuzzyPuffling · 15/04/2021 20:48

Daria 32 I completely agree! We use it a lot ( the bhuna is fab too) and DH and I have lost 2 stone each this year.

Have you had a look at the BBC Good Food website? Lots of ideas for 400-, 500-calorie meals here: www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/category/all-healthy

Hello! What is the link to the book? I'm trying to locate it on Amazon but they have so many books.
SanFranBear · 15/04/2021 20:52

I'm a demon for smoked fish which is really low calorie so you could make a low cal kedgeree or similar?

greeneyedlulu · 15/04/2021 20:53

Get the fast 800 recipe book, I'm doing noom but can't be arsed figuring out calories etc so got this book for the low cal recipes as its all worked out for you. So each week I go through the book, meal plan for all meals, do a shopping list and stick to it. So much easier than faffing about each day, deciding what to do cook.

greeneyedlulu · 15/04/2021 20:56

This is a firm fav in our house and there's also other meals if you click through

I got The Fitness Chef Still Tasty book recently and its fantastic. I cant eat eat wheat or much dairy and I have been able to adapt the recipes quite easily. I had chinese style chicken with egg fried rice for my lunch for less than 600 calories and it was lovely.

Love this. We’re doing an adaptation with prawns tomorrow night

Thank you! Smile

I'm not trying to lose weight but I want to eat healthier and curb my sugar addiction. Would this book help?

delilahbucket · 15/04/2021 21:19

The pinch of nom recipes are fantastic. I find they use peppers a lot and they are good at filling you up for long periods. They have a website with some recipes on for you to try. Hairy dieters books are also very good.

Tuna Nicoise Pasta

Is pasta but not rich, I always found it a good thing to eat while marathon training because it had lots of carbs but didn’t unsettle my stomach,

I also usually have a veggie chilli for a couple of nights when I’m trying to be healthy.

FizzyPink · 15/04/2021 21:23

I use pinch of nom a fair bit but do I find I need to add extra veg into the recipes. They’re almost targeted at unhealthy people who want to lose weight but not eat lots of salads.
I do find the recipes a bit hit and miss though. A few things we’ve really loved and eat often but other recipes I’ve found don’t really work or are a bit dry.
I’m keen to try the hairy bikers one as well

I second the Hairy Bikers Chicken and Chorizo Spanish Bake. We love it in our house

Mypremiumwhat · 15/04/2021 21:36

Ooh lots of lovely suggestions, thanks!

I have a pinch of nom book that I use regularly but I find a lot of their recipes a bit faffy in an attempt to replicate takeaways, which puts me off a little.

Hadn't thought of the hairy bikers, will order that book thanks 👍

Will also check out bbc good food and the Fitness Chef and fast 800 recipe books Smile

Not doing slimming world, just old fashioned calorie counting. Everything in moderation!

Wow that aubergine parmigiana is seriously low in cals! If only I could get the kids to eat it. Would work well as a lunch for me though I think Grin

I 100% recommend Simply Cook. You get all the spices needed for a meal and you add the ingredients, meaning you can make any necessary replacements to stick to calorie goal. Game changer!

FizzyPink · 15/04/2021 22:23

The only thing to watch with Simplycook is some of the spice mixes alone have over 200 calories so they’re not great for trying to keep your whole meal under 500-600. They also don’t include any of the extras that they show you in the photos in the calorie count

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/04/2021 22:36

This week I've made:
toad in the hole from pinch of nom quick/easy book which i served with red cabbage, peas, onion gravy. I think altogether it was around 600 calories. The toad in the hole was 380 ish.

Mapo dofu from a 2 chubby cubs book alongside a veg stir fry and egg 'fried' rice (did in ninja foodi with no oil).

Roast cauliflower from the Fast 800 book with Jack Monroe's roast chickpeas and something or other - mashed potato maybe. The lemon on the roast cauliflower was so good.
