Neighbours Garden is a mess

Hombadigada · 13/04/2021 17:54

There is a family who lives a couple of doors down who are quite, unsavoury, shall we say. Their garden is a mess, they have 2 of each colour bin in their front garden and often on some the lid isn't closed. There is litter all over their garden and on a daily basis I end up with litter in mine due to it blowing in. Also I have to go up the street picking litter up constantly.

I'm really annoyed by it but don't feel like saying anything would be welcome or taken on board.

What would you do about it?!

OP posts:
Pupster21 · 13/04/2021 17:55

Do they own/rent/housing association?

AmandaHoldensLips · 13/04/2021 17:56

What a pain in the arse. I hate scratty people like that.

WorraLiberty · 13/04/2021 17:58

Contact the council if they're causing a litter problem?

If you're not willing to speak to them, there's not much else you can do.

Bluebird2021 · 13/04/2021 17:59

phone the council and say you've seen rats...that may well get them moving

maddiemookins16mum · 13/04/2021 18:02

We have neighbours like that, 3 doors down. Garden is full of rubbish, broken toys, overflowing bins, discarded boxes, it’s disgusting.

GintyMcGinty · 13/04/2021 18:03

Call council environmental health dept about the mess and litter.

suspiria777 · 13/04/2021 18:03

You don't HAVE to. You choose to. If you keep picking up their litter they'll keep leaving it. Complain to your council about flytipping/littering.

longwayoff · 13/04/2021 18:03

I'd ignore it unless its actually got vermin living in it. Reminds me of a friend whose grandad had the most beautiful garden. When I admired it she said "I remember this garden from when I was growing up, it was famous then as it was the worst garden in the street. There was often an old sofa or fridge and a car on bricks out there. It was like that until he retired, then he turned it into paradise." So you may get lucky OP.

We have just moved. Our old neighbours where like that. We spotted rats several times. Just huge pile of rubbish everywhere. No excuse

Aquamarine1029 · 13/04/2021 18:04

Report them to the counsil. The filthy buggers are going to bring in the rats.

TheSandman · 13/04/2021 18:04

And if it's not true may well end with you being one of those "I've got a Mad Neighbour from Hell" that crop up from time to time on these threads.
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 13/04/2021 18:05

You could use your litter picker to close the bin lid?

The OP may choose to pick up the litter because of a social conscience or simply because they don't want rubbish gathering in their garden and rats

The neighbours aren't truculent tweenagers who won't put their laundry in the wash basket. They are grown adults who are acting in an anti social way.

@Hombadigada presumably you aren't the only person being inconvenienced, maybe you and your neighbours could tackle the nuisance neighbours together to try and get them to take responsibility for their rubbish. If an informal approach doesn't work, get on to the council. Good luck, I've had neighbours like this ....they are a pain in the ass

Somanysocks · 13/04/2021 18:12

The woman over the road to me has people blackberry picking as they go past her garden it's so overgrown.

Seymour5 · 13/04/2021 18:15

I wish people who take no pride in their surroundings would be made to live amongst others who are the same. I often wonder why people take tenancies (I was a council housing officer) in properties with large gardens then fail to make even the slightest effort to keep them tidy.

Sofas in front gardens, car parts strewn around in the long grass, and overflowing bins. Lovely. 😑

StoneofDestiny · 13/04/2021 18:16

Council and environmental health

FangsForTheMemory · 13/04/2021 18:17

overgrown is one thing, litter quite another

I agree, but I also don’t understand why the council/private landlords put up with it.

I have dirty neighbours too, both sides!! 😭
although to be fair, the worst one has just started clearing up her garden.

Rented and I cannot for the life of me understand why the landlord tolerates it, if I was a landlord and the tenant abused my property like that I’d want them out.

They sound like the type of people that will leave rubbish regardless of whether or not OP picks it up. So it’s either pick it up or leave the street become as litter strewn as their garden. They won’t give two shits either way.
Cheesypea · 13/04/2021 18:30

Binge watch sone channel 5 neighbour's from hell documentaries- it could be alot worse.

Greenfairy2468 · 13/04/2021 18:36

I feel your pain. I get next doors rubbish in the front garden and all kinds of crap blowing/thrown into the back garden. I used to return stuff and now I throw it in the bin. Some people have no pride or manners!

Lou98 · 13/04/2021 18:36

I think you can contact Environmental Health at your local council if the rubbish is causing an issue. Although, I'm not sure how much they can do if they own the property for example.

Do you know if they own/rent privately/council? If renting privately try contacting their landlord if you know who it is if you don't feel you can approach them

mumwon · 13/04/2021 18:44

environmental health - Oh you have one that will come out if you contact them about rats - gosh
(& I mean that! Our environmental health department wouldn't come out when I rang them & said there was a dead rat outside a corner shop & they don't come out to kill rats you have to do this privately & surprise surprise there are problems with rats )

mumwon · 13/04/2021 18:47

re private landlords - trying to get tenants to clean up is a nightmare - these kind of tenants might not let you in & what can you do? Evict them?

Georgyporky · 13/04/2021 18:49

" if you don't feel you can approach them"

WTF? Who would approach anti-social bastards - unless it was part of your job & you had appropriate training?
