That these pics on the Zara kids clothes website are inappropriate

Looking for summer shoes for DD online this morning and came across these pics which made me feel uncomfortable. Like an attempt at doing high fashion photography for kids clothes. The poses feel inappropriate for kids this young. Also the sandals are fugly but that’s an aside.

OP posts:

I have similar pictures from when I was a kid and I'm 60 y.o.

So do I. I think there is a difference between them and posed pictures for the purpose of selling clothes.

Girls can wear whatever they like

No, not like that

@Lockdownbear

If 1 was a photo of you as a child would you put it on FB, or would you be questioning Dads photography skills.
I probaby have lots of photos of me basically looking like that, wouldn't think twice about them being put on facebook and they were just as likely taken by my mum as my dad
81Byerley · 13/04/2021 10:54

@GCSEmum2024

They look like most of my childhood snaps from the 80s (with better hair). Not inappropriate or sexualised IMO.
Yes, but I'd presume your family snaps were not shared widely. The first photo is definitely inappropriate.
TheVanguardSix · 13/04/2021 10:54

Totally not the point of the thread, but for the love of God, I wish Zara would let us post reviews. You'd never buy from them again if they did. The clothes are terrible quality. I've bought a lot of Zara over the years (in the 90s/early 2000s for myself- the clothes were great back then) and now for DD (they fall apart in the first wash). Thankfully, DD is outgrowing her Zara phase.

AcornAutumn · 13/04/2021 10:55

Agree OP.

Shedbuilder · 13/04/2021 10:55

@Alondra

BTW, Zara is an Spanish brand, if you don't like their clothes switch to a more conservative ones according to your taste.
It's not 'conservative' to be able to spot the pornification of little girls. It's called safeguarding and being concerned about the safety and wellbeing of girls.

There is no difference. There are different marketing strategies to kids and parents in 2021. If you don't agree with the marketing you go somewhere else. The clothes are the same.
BikeRunSki · 13/04/2021 10:57

@kowari

Sat on a moped wearing a swimming costume seems a weird concept to me for a child or adult. A ride back from the beach or pool in a warmer country?
I think it’s just a Mediterranean holiday vibe.
Hopikins · 13/04/2021 10:58

All this reminds me of my best friends Grandmother.( I am 73 now) She would always tell us to sit with our legs together when we sat on her settee. We hadn't clue why, we would have been about 5 upwards.

SoupDragon · 13/04/2021 10:58

There is absolutely nothing wrong with those poses.

@notagainmummy

I agree with you. There's no reason for legs to be bare and akimbo! Or figure hugging tights.
Do you normally wear a swimsuit over a pair of trousers? Weirdly in a swimsuit my legs are bare.
Viviennemary · 13/04/2021 10:59

I agree they're a bit well not right.

CodMouth · 13/04/2021 11:00

If we took those photos I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t pose the child models like that.

It’s all well and good saying oh innocent family photos etc but it’s not is it....it’s a photographer unrelated to the child taking photos in those poses. She could have been photographed with her legs to the side or closed and it wouldn’t show the clothes and shoes any less.

Mrstwiddle · 13/04/2021 11:00

Agree OP, seems fairly obvious to me, surprised some people are ok with it.

knitonedropone · 13/04/2021 11:02

@CounsellorTroi

I agree with you, those poses are a bit off.
I agree. I wouldn't take photos of children like that myself (I'm a photographer)
Alondra · 13/04/2021 11:04

It's not 'conservative' to be able to spot the pornification of little girls. It's called safeguarding and being concerned about the safety and wellbeing of girls.

Where is the pornification in the shown pictures? A small girl showing her legs? a girl in tights?

What a shock!

Alondra · 13/04/2021 11:05

@Lweji

FFS Biscuit
Yeah, pretty much.

Personally I think it's weird to look at those poses and think "pornification".

crystaltips98 · 13/04/2021 11:07

Too much inner thigh and shot up the legs. This is sexualised unfortunately. They could have gone for the retro feel from a higher angle.

BabycakesMatlala · 13/04/2021 11:09

Erm - that's a real child in the photos. You've posted them on an international forum and now everyone is discussing whether or not photos of that real child are too "crotch-focused" or "pornified". If you were concerned about whether photos of a real child in any other context were suggestive, surely you wouldn't expose them to a broader audience for detailed discussion as part of that concerned process?!

If you're concerned, speak direct to Zara, and maybe think through the impact of discussing these photos in this context and ask for this thread to be deleted.

MorrisZapp · 13/04/2021 11:10

Nah that's pretty grim. They know.

Alsohuman · 13/04/2021 11:14

We don’t know that. Companies have been using employees to take photos with their children as models during the last year.

peak2021 · 13/04/2021 11:16

Not inappropriate but I don't want young children having to be fashion conscious and then become fast fashion victims (hope you get the idea, sorry if the term offends anyone).
