AIBU -first time using Bing, typed in "how to" - WARNING their predictive fill-in came up with suggestion about child murder [[Edited by MNHQ to add: MYSTERY SOLVED, MINECRAFT THING]]

This was the very first time I used the Bing search entry. I typed in "how to" meaning to say "how to find info on the ESA" and predictive text came up with this.

For a first time use of Bing this is awful. I'm just very glad my young kids weren't around to see this.

I have actually reported it to microsoft and their suggestion was to put "safe search" mode on. It should have been on automatically imo.

Basically this is a warning to people to be careful if they use Bing to put the Safe Search on first! (I'm not going to be changing my search engine after all)

@ofwarren

I got how to draw and then how to get free robux which isn't surprising as my kids use it. Who else uses your computer because it's based on an algorithm.
That's what I get and I don't have kids or use roblox, they're probably just the most common searches.

Does someone else use the laptop OP?

Imreaaaaady · 12/04/2021 18:00

If it's coming up as a suggestion from the algorithm then that means the person who has searched it hasn't cleared the history. Therefore, you should be able to find out what they were searching for.

iklboo · 12/04/2021 18:00

I got 'how to make pancakes'.

Nursingdreams83 · 12/04/2021 18:01

Its your computer. If i type how to kill on bing it doesnt mention a child at all

VenusTiger · 12/04/2021 18:02

OP have you been looking at crime novels, crime programmes, storylines in soaps, children's clothes, children's bedding (as examples) and the algorithms have muddled these searches up perhaps??

I use DuckDuckGo now - not Google anymore because of who funds it - Bing isn't great imo.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 12/04/2021 18:03

Anyone writing a book in the crime genre in your household, OP. That’s the least disturbing explanation I can think of

picklemewalnuts · 12/04/2021 18:05

Perhaps related to the awful case in the papers, the person recently sentenced? a have you been reading about that, OP?

GoToSleepBabyPlease · 12/04/2021 18:05

I got how to...
draw
get free robux
take a screenshot
make slime
make pancakes

Given that so many people got draw, the algorithm can't be that personalised...

BlueDahlia69 · 12/04/2021 18:05

Mines came up....

How to ..

make french toast 🤣😂

thecatneuterer · 12/04/2021 18:06

I get

How to draw
How to get free robux (which I've never even heard of)
How to screenshot (which I have googled recently)
How to make slime (definitely no previous history for that)

BlueDahlia69 · 12/04/2021 18:06

next on the list was...

lose weight fast .. 🤔 its been reading my mind darned thing 😂

slashlover · 12/04/2021 18:07

@therocinante

Given the Minecraft search (bottom, about villagers - which can be adult or child), I'd say the top search is actually something one of your kids has searched for, hopefully in relation to Minecraft...
Optifine at the bottom is also a Minecraft program. Apparently there are baby zombies in the game which are difficult to kill so it may be that.

I’ve never used bing before so just tried it now and this is the result

I don't use bing on home devices but it's in my work laptop (that's not been switched on for a week Grin - I'm in AL!)

But I agree it's usually based on pervious searches.

Although lockdown with a teen DS may have caused bing to suggest that to me if it has ears WinkGrin

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 12/04/2021 18:11

Never used Bing before and I have the same results as everyone else, in the same order.

I haven't ever used bing before and get the same results as @ColinKnocksTwoPence

Dreamer202 · 12/04/2021 18:14

How to draw as well!

3Britnee · 12/04/2021 18:18

I wonder if op is going to come back?

Ijsbear · 12/04/2021 18:22

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

Isn't it all to do with algorithms based on previous searches and language used on that device?
I most certainly promise I have -never- looked anything like that up! or remotely near.

It doesn't do this by accident, it predicts based on prior searches.

Create a child's account for them to log into the laptop separately.

expires in relief now -this- makes more sense .... the older one does play minecraft ..... all the same, deeply disturbing. I'll be having a chat with him.

Did you read any of the replies saying nobody else had that or that that it could be related to Minecraft? Does anyone else in the house play it?

Boomchicka · 12/04/2021 18:27

Erm yeah, looking at the other searches it's one of your kids. Time for a chat!

Ijsbear · 12/04/2021 18:29

thanks therocinante and slashlover, the mystery is almost certainly solved. He was complaining at length about the baby zombies in minecraft.

I was horrified ...
