Lost my sense of smell and taste!

NotAGreatGamer · 12/04/2021 01:26

DD and I tested positive this morning. DD is asymptomatic and I was too until this evening when I've lost my sense of smell and taste. Now I feel rotten and exhausted but can't sleep and I'm pissed off that I can't taste my fucking tea ☹

I know IABU as we've been lucky to have gotten off lightly but to lose my sense of taste when I'm having to isolate for 20 days (husband tested positive last week) is a real kick in the teeth. Food/baking was the one thing I would look forward to and enjoy most. Grrrrrr Angry

You are right YABU.

FrankButchersDickieBow · 12/04/2021 02:19

Well I would like to tell you it gets better, but my sister tested positive on Xmas eve and still has not regained her sense of taste.

I'm sure it's different for everyone though.

Frownette · 12/04/2021 02:22

Poor you! It's a great time to drink water and eat healthy food and look fresh as a daisy and glowing though :)

EdinaMonsoon · 12/04/2021 02:29

My sense of smell & taste has disappeared/reappeared randomly since testing positive 3 weeks ago. I can be fine for an hour or so & then it will disappear again or things taste weird. I was particularly gutted when my tea began to taste like tar & shop bought hummus tasted like cheap ketchup 🤢 I actually cried when I first lost my sense of smell (at the end of the first week & I was exhausted & really unwell). But It’s (mostly) one of life’s simple but great pleasures, isn’t it?

HikeForward · 12/04/2021 06:18

It may come back in a few days. I think mine disappeared for about 5 days then gradually came back.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 12/04/2021 08:11

If you've tested positive and that is your only symptom, look on the bright side - if could be a lot worse.
You have the strength to get out of bed, not so exhausted you need to sleep 20 hours a day, you're not in hospital...

Timper · 12/04/2021 10:14

I’m sure those in hospital wish they had your symptoms. Ridiculous post.

Pupster21 · 12/04/2021 10:16

Just a word of warning, I thought I had got off lightly too. Day 5 the other symptoms came.

pepsicolagirl · 12/04/2021 10:20

Just because some have it worse does not mean the OP is not allowed to feel crappy about her symptoms. Ridiculous comment.

Hmm hope you never complain about anything in your life ever because somebody will always have it worse.

I hope it improves for you soon OP

Timper · 12/04/2021 10:26

Of course she has the right to complain but i think it’s a bit crass and insensitive to do so on a forum where there’s likely people who have suffered far worse than her.

So where would be suitable for her to complain? On the top of a deserted mountain? In a locked, soundproof room? Because whenever we complain about anything there is a change that we are doing so to someone who is worse off. It's the classic MN "My mother is driving me insane" / "Well my mother is dead" argument.
rainyskylight · 12/04/2021 10:32

Yeah YABU. In your position I’d be relieved that I’ve got it and got off lightly.

Shopliftersoftheworldunite · 12/04/2021 10:35

Not to one up you or anything OP but this happened to us on CHRISTMAS EVE after we’d paid £100s for a big Christmas shop, including roast with full trimmings, loads of perishable treats and expensive wine.

We win.

Histrionicz · 12/04/2021 10:36

My brother got it in February 2020 (on a flight). His sense of taste is still absolutely fucked. He says everything tastes like menthol cigarettes and he can almost constantly smell burning. Sad

MiloAndEddie · 12/04/2021 10:39

Argh I feel your pain OP, it’s actually a pretty shite side effect that you don’t really appreciate until it happens!
Sorry to break it to you though, I had COVID in October and mine still isn’t back to normal

BigFatLiar · 12/04/2021 10:56

I suspect many have failed to see that OP is being a little light hearted.

Stuck in with no sense of smell/taste when you would normally have enjoyed the taking the time to bake and cook.

ViolaFields · 12/04/2021 11:05

Well. I am right now drinking a cup of tea that I cannot taste. I had Covid over New Year. I can smell and taste certain things but it is not normal at all.

This was my main symptom and a terrible headache that I still have slightly.

skirk64 · 12/04/2021 11:39

Be careful what you wish for, you may find as your sense of smell returns it goes a little haywire. Some people find that as their sense of smell comes back, things smell different or disgusting - vegetables smelling like rotten flesh for example. Years back I had a virus that led fresh bread to smell like fresh excrement for a few months - lovely period that was.

Oh give over timper. I've lost a family member to covid. I'm not offended by this post Confused

pickingdaisies · 12/04/2021 11:43

Crass and insensitive to post on aibu???
Give me strength.

Yeah well I'm just gonna one up you there too. We had spent THOUSANDS on our Christmas party. Sir Elton freaking John was coming round. We ALL caught covid. None of us could eat for another month, all of that food gone to waste.

We win. Grin

Rosieposy89 · 12/04/2021 11:57

I had this last year just as we locked down in March. It wasn't a key Covid symptom then so didn't think it was that but obviously was. It was the weirdest thing, was peeling garlic and couldn't smell it. I think mine took 10 days to come back. It was horrible, was so worried it wouldn't return!

Beeme29 · 12/04/2021 12:02

You have my sympathy op. I lost my sense of taste (but smell was still there just weak) at Christmas. I tested neg so I’m not sure what it was or a false neg. I did have a throat and tooth infection and it’s really common for me to lose my senses with any virus I’ve ever had.

It wasn’t even covid after testing negative and not having to isolate and it was bad enough! Not being able to taste at Christmas was hell.

You being isolated for so long sucks too op. I think people are being awful some of the comments on here. I would be frustrated too!

KoalaOok · 12/04/2021 12:27

Does anyone know how it does this? I find it really weird that some people can not taste things but other people end up in ICU.
