Lost my sense of smell and taste!

DD and I tested positive this morning. DD is asymptomatic and I was too until this evening when I've lost my sense of smell and taste. Now I feel rotten and exhausted but can't sleep and I'm pissed off that I can't taste my fucking tea ☹

I know IABU as we've been lucky to have gotten off lightly but to lose my sense of taste when I'm having to isolate for 20 days (husband tested positive last week) is a real kick in the teeth. Food/baking was the one thing I would look forward to and enjoy most. Grrrrrr Angry

I've read that it can last months! How do you manage?

I have been trying to lose weight and don't like salad usually so maybe now is the perfect time to eat it 😅

I lost my taste and pretty much all smells made me want to vomit for more than 25 weeks due to Chemotherapy. And it has not recovered fully and possibly never will. Oh yeah and after all of the 25 weeks of treatment I still have cancer.

Covid sux but if those are the only side affects that you have then you have it pretty easy.

I hope you have a speedy recovery.

I found yogurt, ice cream and angel delight were the only things I wanted to eat because food isn't nice if you can't taste it, pizza is particularly horrible. The positive is you can buy the cheap brands Grin

After 10 days to 2 weeks it returned but took a good month before close to normal and I'm left with a couple of foods I can't now stomach bizarrely

I don’t know anyone who lost theirs for months in RL. Most of my colleagues had covid around the same time as me, most of us lost sense of taste and smell by day 3, and said it came back after 5-10 days.

I found it really odd but I was also very ill so didn’t want to eat or drink for a while. I kept thinking things were burning though as when it came back everything warm (eg coffee) smelt like burnt clingfilm. But that only lasted a week at most.

My appetite hasn’t returned after covid (long covid now) but it has nothing to do with taste or smell, more a loss of interest in eating and less energy to cook.

FourEyesGood · 12/04/2021 13:38

My sense of taste returned after about two weeks and my sense of smell still isn’t quite fully there, 6 weeks on from my positive test, but I can smell most things. I found that I still enjoyed my usual favourite foods - maybe my brain was tricked into it by the appearance and texture of the food.

Hope you feel loads better soon.

I lost my sense of taste and smell on Christmas day just before sitting down to eat the dinner my son spent 2 hours cooking.

I couldn't eat it. I didn't eat for 4 days because everything just felt wrong in my mouth and made me gag.

Came back slowly over the following 6 weeks.

Alreadyinmypyjamas · 12/04/2021 13:44

This might sound stupid, but does it mean you can't taste/smell anything at all or does everything taste/smell weird?

Mine lasted about 6 weeks. I started to just really mix textures up since I couldn’t smell or taste a thing. Experiment with textures.
MiloAndEddie · 12/04/2021 14:47

@Alreadyinmypyjamas in my case while I had COVID it completely went, couldn’t smell or taste anything at all.
Now certain things taste or smell weird or disgusting but strangely they all smell or taste the same regardless of what it is

LastInTheQueue · 12/04/2021 15:10

I hope both come back soon. I tested positive on New Year’s Day, but didn’t lose my sense of smell or taste until almost two weeks later. Took a while for them to come back, maybe about 2-3 weeks, and I still can’t smell as well as I used to.

It does suck. I know some people are saying it could be worse, but it’s not a bloody competition.

eatsleepread · 12/04/2021 16:46

I had a dreadful time of it with Covid, and now have post-Covid hair loss. I'd have considered myself lucky if yours were the only symptoms I'd had!
That said, I do very much hope that you continue to experience mild symptoms and get well soon (I'm a foodie too, and hate not being able to taste!).

eatsleepread · 12/04/2021 16:47

Oh, and those were my shortest symptoms. The taste and smell returned after a couple of days. Wish I could say the same for my other symptoms Grin

eatsleepread · 12/04/2021 16:50

@Histrionicz

Me too, me too! I feel like I can smell cigarette smoke constantly, and this is a couple of months later!
I mentioned it to the doctor, and he said several other patients have told him the same.
Weird, eh?!

Butteredtoast55 · 12/04/2021 17:09

I have no idea whether or not it was Covid but I lost mine over a year ago and can still smell absolutely nothing. It is actually quite depressing after a while.
