Does anyone else feel 'meh' on Sunday afternoons?

It starts at around 4pm. That feeling of dread, that monday and the working week is around the corner - it's all going to start again.

The world feels shut down after the supermarkets shut at 4pm and the traffic gets quieter. It's like the atmosphere is subdued as it gets ready to reset.

I've felt like this on Sundays ever since school, and strangely I didn't feel it on Friday nights when I used to work weekends. It's only ever on Sundays. Is it just me?

Yessss. Those Sunday scaries really creep up on you

cherrypiepie · 11/04/2021 17:35

Yes I hate it that churning stomach feeling - antiques roadshow theme I hate and countryfile. For that reason.Bizarrely I liked heartbeat and down to earth - those mindless family drama type things. I hate roast dinners and being 'stuck inside'. Long for Sunday trading to be scrapped.

For the past 2 years I have been 4 days and now have Mondays off and it has done so much good for me. I don't get the same feeling in Monday night.

Most people want a Friday off but I love Monday because I don't get the Sunday dread.

Noshowlomo · 11/04/2021 17:36

Yeah it’s why I’m currently pissed on prosecco 🤷🏻‍♀️

Roasteros · 11/04/2021 17:36

There is a word for that Sunday evening / Monday morning feeling of dread; "Smonday". Sums it up perfectly.

Twilightstarbright · 11/04/2021 17:38

You are my people!

It's been better today as it's sunny where I am and we are watching the football but I hate it in winter when it's dark and there's nothing to do. I hate Sunday trading hours, and lots of local businesses aren't open on a Sunday where I am (not UK).

OooPourUsACupLove · 11/04/2021 17:46

I used to...horrible churny tummy on Sunday. With lockdown I’ve discovered it’s not actually Monday or work that’s the problem, it’s anxiety that I need to be up and organised with everything I’ll need that day in time to be ready to commute for work. Now I can roll out of bed at 8, be “at work” work by 8.45 and if I forgot anything I can grab it at lunch, the Sunday icks have totally stopped.

Neron · 11/04/2021 17:49

Used to when I had a corporate job. 7pm was my time of Sunday dread.
Now have a 'job' I love so don't feel that way now, but still wonder how quick the time on my day off has passed.

Earlgrey666 · 11/04/2021 17:49

Yes I get this too! I used to work shifts with no working pattern so could be off Mondays but still felt like it.
It's a feeling of impending doom, I also relate to the Songs of Praise feeling. Antiques Roadshow, Last of the Summer Wine and Mastermind also have a similar effect!

InFiveMins · 11/04/2021 17:55

Same here. I don't even dislike my job, it's fine - I just hate Sundays, always have done. I LOVE Friday nights and Saturdays - but Sundays just aren't for me.

I think it's partly because I wait so longingly for the weekend to come round that I get depressed that it's gone so quickly and whilst I enjoy my job, I obviously prefer being at home more - doing nothing! 2 days is nothing at all, especially when 1 of them is spent wasted because you've spent it dreading the next week!!

My DP loves Sundays though and doesn't feel any dread at all.

peak2021 · 11/04/2021 17:55

I used to feel like the OP on a Sunday. Always had to be doing something, be it a visit to a pub with friends (used to be a group went every Sunday evening until I and others moved), then the gym when I belonged. Whilst my DGM was alive, her garden in the summer on a Sunday afternoon when I could easily have done it on a Saturday and in the week in June or July .

I stopped having that feeling in my 40s, not 100% sure why, but perhaps the choices of things to watch with multi-channel tv and the internet may have helped.

wildthingsinthenight · 11/04/2021 17:56

Yep. The Sunday Scaries.
It must be a throwback though as I don't work now and still get it!

pearpickingporky84 · 11/04/2021 17:59

I normally feel like this but I’ve actually been looking forward to Sunday evenings since the new series of Line of Duty started, normal service will resume when the series is over...

FastFood · 11/04/2021 18:00

Yeah I have that too.
But it's not the monday dread, I like my job and never feel stressed when thinking about work.
It's more the regret of not having done much of the weekend. I should have read more, should have baked a cake, should have taken a long walk, should have had a nap etc...

OnlyToWin · 11/04/2021 18:03

@hennybeans

DH always says it's the dark tea time of the soul. So I guess he feels the same!

This really made me laugh!! Know just what he means.

I once had Sunday fear inso badly that I started getting it during Strictly! 😢

Cam2020 · 11/04/2021 18:04

Not in my current job, thankfully. It's a horrible feeling and I've had it plenty if times before. When I was at college I hated Tuesdays, and it took me years to not hate Tuesdays, long after I'd left! The mind is a funny thing!

I'm finding during lockdown I feel meh mid-morning Sunday though and its an effort to bother doing much. Once I start though, I perk up and have a lovely day.

Coasterfan · 11/04/2021 18:07

Usually yes but not this week as after 5.5 long months Alton Towers opens tomorrow and we have a week off and theme park fun booked every day!!!

OhShitShit · 11/04/2021 18:07

I’ve had this my whole life, except my single twenties in London when I used to go get battered in the pub (winter) or park (summer) with my mates, and ease into the week with a nice fat hangover Grin

Other than that, yes. Sunday’s are shit and smell like Antiques Roadshow, packet Paxo and radox.

I make them “no plans” days for DS and make sure we mix it up (today we’ve Uber Eatsed a take away lunch, did bath time at 3pm and spent the afternoon fannying around with toys in his bedroom) so he never gets these awful, Proustian, painful feelings attached to any Sunday stuff.

Although I do listen to the archers religiously on a Sunday morning, so I suppose there’s a risk there...

somuchpainouch · 11/04/2021 18:08

@Coldwinterahead1

I hate the Antiques Roadshow theme tune.
Yes! Antiques Roadshow, Songs of Praise and Heartbeat were the bane of my Sunday evenings when I was a child. Even worse when it was summer and therefore too light to sleep and too hot as you couldn't have a window open as there was always some bastard doing Sunday evening strimming
OnlyToWin · 11/04/2021 18:11

It was always “Last of the Summer Wine” theme for me...Blush

Sound and smell of the tumble dryer from my childhood - all the windows and mirrors dripping!!😝

ByTheSea · 11/04/2021 18:11

Feeling like that this very minute

Neron · 11/04/2021 18:12

smell like Antiques Roadshow, packet Paxo and radox
Ah the memories!

Cam2020 · 11/04/2021 18:12

@Noshowlomo i like your style 😂
@Coasterfan amazing! I haven't been in years but such good memories! Have a great time!

Ellpellwood · 11/04/2021 18:14

Not really at the moment. A) Line of Duty and B) at 8am on Mondays I get to drop my full-on toddler at nursery and go and sit at a desk in a nice quiet office!

Ellpellwood · 11/04/2021 18:18

@Coasterfan

Usually yes but not this week as after 5.5 long months Alton Towers opens tomorrow and we have a week off and theme park fun booked every day!!!
Sooo jealous! We had 3 fab days there in September. I'm keeping my mask for posterity.
MMMarmite · 11/04/2021 18:21

I remember seeing this sentiment in a book as a teenager, and not understanding at all!

Sundays I'm usually doing some outdoor sport all day, so feel happy and enjoyably windswept as I settle down for sunday evening dinner. No point wasting a big part of every weekend feeling sad it's about to end.
