When Covid is over I’m taking my kids to England for the fist time. They’re in their teens. Never been to UK before and want them to see and experience different areas. Where would you go?

OP posts:
Whereiswarmth · 11/04/2021 13:39

Where are you from, how long will you be here where are you flying into?

TheMotherlode · 11/04/2021 13:41

What kind of things would you like to see? How much are you willing to travel in that 2 weeks, would you rather stay in one place or move around?

Wingedharpy · 11/04/2021 13:41

Where are you coming from?
Which bit of England will you be arriving at?
How long are you here for?
How old are your kids?
What sort of things do you all like doing?

peak2021 · 11/04/2021 13:41

Do they have any specific interests? Harry Potter came to mind.

OldEvilOwl · 11/04/2021 13:42

So Just in England or the whole of the UK?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 11/04/2021 13:42

What are their interests?
Where would you be flying into?
Are you able to drive or would you be reliant on public transport?
What kind of budget do you have?

beginningoftheend · 11/04/2021 13:44

Scotland, Wales are lovely too Grin

TeenMinusTests · 11/04/2021 13:44

Stonehenge.

seensome · 11/04/2021 13:44

Kent / Sussex you get to see the countryside and coastal areas then a short journey on train to London .

TheMotherlode · 11/04/2021 13:45

London is the probably the obvious place to start, so much to do and see there. But if you want to see some more of England you might want to consider Cornwall, The Costwolds, Yorkshire. If you’re willing to travel a bit further there are some lovely scenic parts of North Wales (with great castles).

Some great answers already there.......unless you're "posting for traffic"

DartmoorChef · 11/04/2021 13:49

Two weeks is not a lot of time to see this country but when my friend from california came for her first visit her list was

London Tower
General London sightseeing
Warwick Castle
The lake district
Stonehenge (you may as well drive on into Devon and Cornwall then as Stonehenge is not much of a day out really..its a walk round some big stones alongside lots of other tourists)
Northern Ireland (we did a 2 day trip which was great)

SimonJT · 11/04/2021 13:51

The UK or specifically England?

Budget?
Age of children?
Things they like?

Seeline · 11/04/2021 13:59

Where are you coming from? Presumably you'd like to see something different to home?

TheMotherlode · 11/04/2021 14:07

There are lots of stately homes you can visit if that’s something by you’re into. Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is incredibly beautiful with amazing gardens, or Blenheim Palace is lovely too. I believe you can also go to Highclere castle now too (where they filmed Downton Abbey).

UnbeatenMum · 11/04/2021 14:19

4-5 days in London to do museums, parks, the Tower and Buckingham Palace. Combine Stonehenge with Salisbury including the Cathedral and/or the New Forest. Then take a week to relax somewhere e.g. the Lake District, the Peak District, Yorkshire or the coast somewhere. Depending on children's ages a theme park might be worth a go. If not just England, Giants Causeway is amazing but would be another flight to NI. Which country do you live in now out of interest?

UnbeatenMum · 11/04/2021 14:20

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is also really cool.

OscarWildesCat · 11/04/2021 14:21

Probably need to be a bit more specific, England is a big place.

dottiedodah · 11/04/2021 14:39

Maybe start with Tower of London(Probably need to pre book tickets ATM for all things like this ) See the sights/London eye .Stonehenge also worth a look .Dorset Coastline Studland / Lulworth Cove .Move on to Bournemouth and the seaside .If enough time Go to Wales /Cardiff .Lots of Castles and things to see there .Cardiff Castle fantastic and right in the middle of town

LesleyA · 11/04/2021 21:45

Thank you all so much. Jotting then down and mapping them out. Much appreciated

There is so much to do in London, you could easily fill you whole time from there. Canterbury is nice to visit, and Bath.

Pupster21 · 11/04/2021 22:08

The Lake District is beautiful, I’d say worth the trip up if budget and time allows. I’d spend some time in London, Tower of London, palaces, museums etc. Then I’d get the train up to Edinburgh and spend a few nights there, from there either Northumberland and Alnwick castle if you’re into Harry Potter or the Lake District for more outdoorsy activities like hiking, high ropes, boat trips. Fly home from Manchester after a few days in North Wales if time allows. You could also go to York, Bath or Chester.

EileenGC · 11/04/2021 22:11

I would do a week in London and a week exploring somewhere else (Lake District, Wales or Scotland... or another city in the north). It could become too busy though and depends on what your children enjoy.

ChelseaCat · 11/04/2021 22:13

Bath is beautiful and a wonderful city to wander around. Lots of Roman stuff to look at if you’re that way inclined

Hastybird · 11/04/2021 22:18

Ok, assuming you're flying in to a London airport, 2 weeks between April-October I'd do:
London - 4 days
Oxford or Cambridge - 2 days
The Peak District, or at a push the Lakes - 3 days
Possibly add in another historic town in the SE that takes your interest e.g Windsor, Canterbury, Stratford Upon Avon - I would say York but that's a lot of travel.

Or - head to Northumberland and enjoy amazing beaches, glorious castles and tales of Vikings.
