To think Friends Reunion show is pointless?

Sightforsoreeyez · 11/04/2021 12:44

I loved Friends, watched the episodes a billion times, grew up watching it.

I just don’t care about a reunion where it’s behind the scenes footage, the set recreated and the cast talking about it.

I’d love a one off episode (an hour long) where they actually play their characters and we see how their lives turned out ... jobs, marriages, children,

@MabelPines

So I’ve been amusinf myself for an hour or so thinking what they would be like now and there is so much scope! You could have Rachel as a fashion blogger, Monica and Chandler running a YouTube channel focused on her recipes and healthy eating/exercise, Pheobe joining extinction rebellion, Ross doing a dating blog/insta daddy, and Joey finding lots of work recording erotic audiobooks .

Any other ideas ?

Yes-leave it well alone in the past. Grin

Are the cast desperate for cash?

FireflyRainbow · 11/04/2021 14:47

I'd watch both

Haha fair enough! Grin

MaskingForIt · 11/04/2021 14:54

@Sightforsoreeyez
They could have done it would a vowel renewal for Monica and Chandler

I’d love to see a vowel renewal where they become Manace (a Drag King act) and Chindlor (a Jimmy Hill impersonator).

Sparklingbrook · 11/04/2021 14:58

Maybe Joey could find his 'foot double' this time around. Hmm Grin

sunflowersandbuttercups · 11/04/2021 15:04

I don’t see why not? We’re not talking about a film or even a new series. We’re talking about a one off episode where they have the material there to create something interesting and funny.

I just don't think it would work. It was a great show about a bunch of people in their twenties figuring out who they are. It had great "natural" ending - I don't feel like a reunion would work. Why not just leave it with the ending it had?

Also a show of its time? Well it’s gained a new audience from Gen Z watching Netflix so it’s not been left behind.

By a show of it's time, I mean it was very nineties/noughties in terms oft the fashion, the humour, the commentary - yes, younger people are watching it now (for the first time) but I just don't think it would work if it was set in modern society.

Yes it should have had more diversity however you can’t change that now but a new episode could be more inclusive of the main cast plus other ethnicities and also in writing and production.

But then it wouldn't be FRIENDS, it would be like a whole new show and I think it would ruin what it was. But I'm not a fan of everything being changed and updated - just make new shows, don't keep re-hashing old ones Grin

I agree with this. The ending was perfect as it was.

folloyourarro · 11/04/2021 15:07

I felt like this until I saw the Fresh Prince reunion show and really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to the Friends one.

folloyourarro · 11/04/2021 15:08

I don't think the characters are reuniting by the way, I think it's the actors reliving it with footage and discussing it all etc.

iwishiwasatcentralperk · 11/04/2021 15:09

I loved Friends and me and DD watch it all the time but I am in two minds about an actual new episode.

Half of me would love to see what they are up to now, and the other half thinks no, leave it alone, it ended at the right time, it was about a group of single people in their 20's, and it came to a natural end.

@MabelPines - However, if they did a proper episode, I think that it could be Ross and Rachel finally getting married, having split up and got back together several times over the years, Joey is a famous actor, married to a starlet half his age who adores him, Phoebe and Mike run a vegan coffee shop at Central Perk, where Emma waitresses. Monica and Chandler are still living out in the suburbs , he is still commuting and she is still dreaming of owning her own restaurant.

The episode would end with Rachel running out on the wedding Grin

Just the way it should be imo!
PhillipPhillop · 11/04/2021 15:31

I thought it was going to be a scripted reunion of the characters where they catch up with each other after losing touch. If it's just the actors sitting around trying to be funny with some old clips then it's no different to the 2016 reunion. Hopefully I've got it wrong.

TheGoogleMum · 11/04/2021 15:37

I love friends but yeah not bothered about them all talking about it would prefer a 1 off special episode of them all!

Sparklingbrook · 11/04/2021 15:39

I think the cast talking about the existing series and finding out what they thought of some of the storylines would be v interesting. Way better than a Middle Aged Friends episode.

Sightforsoreeyez · 11/04/2021 15:40

Since when was it about 20 year olds. They had all turned 30 by season 7. Chandler and Ross were also already 30 by season 4. So presumably would have been closer to 40 by the end of the show (maybe around 36)

whenwillthemadnessend · 11/04/2021 15:40

Yes but pointless. The inbetweeners one was the biggest let down EVER!!!

folloyourarro · 11/04/2021 15:41

"It's not an episode. It's not scripted. It's six of us coming together for the first time in I don't know how long." Kudrow also said that she loves getting together with her former cast mates as they all have such great memories."

SubCoral · 11/04/2021 15:41

Agree, I’d love to see the actual character development. Not particularly interested in the actors

folloyourarro · 11/04/2021 15:42

@whenwillthemadnessend agreed it was awful, but the Fresh Prince one was great and also made by HBO Max, Jimmy Carr was the biggest issue and he won't be in sight!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 11/04/2021 15:43

Alright, a bunch of people in their twenties AND thirties then.

But the point still stands - it was a show about young people finding their way in NYC. It wouldn't really work any other way.

VenusTiger · 11/04/2021 15:46

It was never going to be an episode, it was always going to be an 'unscripted discussion' about Friends and the characters.

It's a shame, but I agree that it wouldn't be worth it with all the grown up kids too - you know what it's like when new characters appear - they'd have to do it without the kids for it to be a success.

Btw, they're not in their 40s, they're all in their 50s with Aniston and Perry being 52 and Kudrow 58.

MrsFin · 11/04/2021 15:50

all of the characters are flawed and very irritating upon analysis

Isn't that the basis for lots of comedies?

iwishiwasatcentralperk · 11/04/2021 15:56

sunflower ok, apologies for not being completly accurate, what I should have said was Friends was a show about 20-30 year olds living in New York......

The main point was, that it wasn't a show about married couples with kids, the scriptwriters themselves have said that.

Sightforsoreeyez · 11/04/2021 15:57

But it’s evolving a concept it’s not then pretending to be doing the same thing they did 20 years ago. It’s a nostalgic memory that people want to see what happened to characters - not about people relating to 20/30 year olds. It’s also not a show - it’s a one off episode.

How can anyone say it wouldn’t work when it’s never even been created. Like if they’d done an episode and you watched it and thought wow awful, that totally didn’t work then fine. But clearly none of us have seen an episode - So how close minded do you have to be to think something you’ve never watched, have no experience in writing or acting “wouldn’t work”
