To think water company is taking the piss?

My water used to be tacked onto my rent. This has changed this year and just received the bill. No chance of a water meter to reduce the costs as its a block of flats according to them (not sure if this is true or if they are trying to pull a fast one)

£44.50 a month for two of us. My electric is cheaper than this!!

I think it's all separated. All the pipes for this look the same as if they were on a house if that makes sense. I can turn this all off independently in my place.

Oh could be a postcode thing if it's done like that as I have a C in the first bit.

Seems expensive to me. I live in 3 bed house and pay just under £17 a month. We are a postcode beginning with C as well.

PattyPan · 10/04/2021 17:33

That sounds very high for a flat even unmetered. We are with Thames water too albeit outside of London and pay £21 a month (two adults no children). Before we had the meter fitted I think it was around £30 based on it being a two bedroom house - if you don’t have a meter it’s based on size of house and number of residents. But they can fit a meter in flats so don’t be fobbed off on that. We are in a Victorian terrace and they weren’t sure at first if they could fit a meter. In the end they couldn’t do it in the pavement like they did for our old maisonette so they put it on the pipe with the stopcock inside the house.

Tallybo · 10/04/2021 17:36

I agree with checking whether it's billed over 10 months instead of 12, ours is.

BritWifeinUSA · 10/04/2021 17:40

You’ll be glad you don’t live here. We pay over $100 a month. Two adults. No children.

PinkiOcelot · 10/04/2021 17:43

I pay £57 per month. No meter. We’re in the North East.

pam290358 · 10/04/2021 17:44

Whereabouts in the country are you. We’re north west and paying £35 a month and there are four of us. Seems a bit pricey.

VeganVeal · 10/04/2021 18:30

My water company takes the piss and poo, its part of the service

emmathedilemma · 10/04/2021 18:34

About 75p per person per day for unlimited water and removal of your wastewater, seems quite cheap when you bear in mind it's at least a £ a litre in the shops!

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/04/2021 18:58

Just a few questions (I'm an ex water company employee).
When was the building built?
Is the building a house (or similar ) that has been converted into flats?
Do you have your own stop tap inside the flat?
Do you have your own stop tap outside, or is there just one for the entire building?

canigooutyet · 10/04/2021 19:57

Purpose built around 1950/1960.
I have a stop tap in my property its been used to turn off my supply for some works I had done. Also used it to turn off the supply when I had a leak,
There is also a stop tap for the whole building, this gets used roughly on a yearly basis. When the main tank is cleaned.
I also have a small tank in my property that feeds from the main tank.

I'm wondering if Thames Water have been given incorrect info as a small section of the block has communal heating etc. Whereas the rest us of have our own independent supplies.

We pay £38 a month (for 10 months of the year). 4 bed terraced house with 5 people living in it. No water meter. We're with Affinity.

canigooutyet · 10/04/2021 20:01

And yes its split over 10 months.

OP posts:
Daphnise · 10/04/2021 20:06

I think that's nearly double what should be paid. (Water and Sewerage)
In London it's mainly Thames Water for both Water and Sewerage?

If you're on Rateable Value maybe your place is large or in a very high value area- at any rate there are worthwhile suggestions above on getting a fairer tariff.

SeasonFinale · 10/04/2021 20:10

£53 a month here so seems reasonable to me

BigPyjamas · 10/04/2021 20:25

Seems high.

We pay £55 ish for a large rural house

CloudFormations · 10/04/2021 20:32

Taking the piss is their job. Someone has to manage the sewers.

LaPampa · 10/04/2021 20:33

Seems ok, we pay more than £55 a month. SW

Mylittlesandwich · 10/04/2021 20:33

This is fascinating, out of interest how much is your council tax on top of water?

FlyingBurrito · 10/04/2021 20:34

You can't compare metered water cost in one part of the country with rateable value in another part or even the same place. It's completely meaningless they are totally different things.

Try and get a meter but otherwise there's nothing you can do about the cost unfortunately.

Theonewiththecandles · 10/04/2021 20:35

Previously lived in a flat in the north, two adults on a water meter cost me £15 a month. Didn't have a shower so both of us had to take baths.

Moved house to a less desirable postcode, unable to fit a meter and it's £35 a month for the same two people. Nearly cried but not much I can do since they dug up the front yard and still can't fit a meter.

Ivy48 · 10/04/2021 20:37

£39 in South Wales. Sounds reasonable to me

KingdomScrolls · 10/04/2021 20:37

Ours is £36 for waste and £32 for clean water per month two adults and a two year old, but was the same pre-DS. We're South East yours seems pretty reasonable. When we lived in a flat on a meter about six years ago we were paying £49 a month for both m, just two adults who work full time so not in the house much and that goes up every year.

Motnight · 10/04/2021 20:39

We pay appropriately £22 per person per month for our water. Also live in London. It does annoy me when I walk past leaks for weeks on end!

littlepattilou · 10/04/2021 20:40

@canigooutyet

YABU. That's quite good. Washing clothes, showering, bathing, water for your pets (and you) to drink, teas, coffees, washing up, brushing your teeth, dishwasher, cooking, flushing the loo, watering plants, washing the car, ...

People use water for a multitude of reasons, and £22.25 a month each is great value.
