BBC coverage of death of DoE

It's too much!!!!! Yes have a tribute but nonstop coverage is excessive. I have just had to turn from radio 4 to Radio Scotland to World Service to try and find a DoE free station. In vain!!! Turned to Radio 2 and got mournful Winkleman playing dreary sad tunes and reading out sad messages from listeners. I really think the national broadcaster ought to be mindful of the pandemic and not overload us with sadness at this time. Prince Philip has come to the end of his natural life at the age of 99. It's sad but it's not a tragedy. Does anybody else agree?

This has been ''done'' - yesterday!

BadMudda · 10/04/2021 10:54

Just turn it off.
There happens to be millions of people who will be watching this on television.

It's your choice to turn it off. Nobody is forcing you to watch it.

Love51 · 10/04/2021 10:54

I felt sick with the radio going on about what a family man he was. He encouraged Charles to marry Diana despite being in love with someone else, and he raised Prince Andrew. Most people do a much better job of raising their kids to become good people than that.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2021 10:55

Isn’t it because we are in official mourning period. Most people don’t have specific rules about mourning periods anymore but the RF do. So we are not used to this.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 10:57

yes, we are in official mourning i guess,
we dont lose members of the royal family very regularly so it takes us by surprise.
i dont even remember queen mother's death but i may remember duke of edinburgh's death for the argumentative sarky mumnsetters.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 10:57

mumnset is a horrible place in times like this.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 10/04/2021 10:57

@CalicoKate

Why do people click on threads they aren't interested in and comment on them? Must be bored
The same reason you've commented just to ask why other people comment?
sunflowersandbuttercups · 10/04/2021 10:58

Nobody has been horrible.

But it's not like anyone is being forced to watch. If you think the coverage is too much, just go and do something else!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 10/04/2021 10:59

i said the same thing @sunflowersandbuttercups, last night and today. i am boring myself Grin

Kiehl · 10/04/2021 11:00

Obviously the BBC and all channels had a plan for when DofE or Queen dies. It's probably a good 10 years old. Outdated.
He was 99, had a good life etc and yes it's sad for the queen but for me that's about it.
The morning on TV reflects a bygone time when the RF were far more important and integral to the British nation.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/04/2021 11:00

Kitchen Cabinet has just been on R4, as it normally would be. The rest of the day has the usual schedule too.

ComDummings · 10/04/2021 11:01

It’s a load of shit. Why do we have to be sad as a nation because a duke who was nearly 100 died? It’s sad for the family, an announcement on TV/radio yesterday with some tributes would have been nice. But lingering on and on is pathetic. Thousands of people die every day 🤷🏼‍♀️

StillCoughingandLaughing · 10/04/2021 11:02

@Wellpark

To those who have taken the trouble to reply without being sarcastic, thanks for your input. To those other snarky ones, I am glad not to have to know you in real life. Mind you I bet you are not confrontational to real people. Save it all for MN.
If that’s aimed at me, sorry to disappoint you, but I’m pretty confrontational in real life too. I’m glad we don’t know each other either.
the80sweregreat · 10/04/2021 11:03

Most of The radio stations were somber yesterday evening apart from ' planet rock ' !

bitheby · 10/04/2021 11:04

I'm finding it really hard to deal with. I'm suffering horrendous anxiety at the moment, I use the radio to help to calm me. I can't take the morose music. I'm trying a commercial radio station but might just switch off.

ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2021 11:06

I wonder how many people complaining about the tv coverage will complain when they get an extra Bank Holiday for the Queen’s funeral (when that happens)

I'm sorry you're struggling Flowers You can play music via YouTube or any other number of streaming services for free. Spotify also has a free streaming option - there are adverts but they're generally for things like Coca Cola or new podcasts.

Same Grin

I can't wait for Monday!

bumblingbovine49 · 10/04/2021 11:21

It has been less than ONE day so far. I'd give it a few days. It will die down a bit until the funeral maybe . Then the media will calm down properly .

Wellpark · 10/04/2021 11:25

Bitheby
I'm sorry you are struggling. I had thoughts of folk feeling like this in mind when I started the thread. I really hope your mood lifts and thank you to sunflowersandbuttercups for helpful comments on how to do that ❤️

Stillcoughingandlaughing, you sound exactly like someone who would drain the life out of a person. Eat some chocolate or something. Please.

Well yeah, that's because there's nothing on the telly...
cyclingmad · 10/04/2021 11:43

High time the RF modernise the mourning process.

Its so out of touch and out of date with current world we live in.

What on earth have they got to say about an old privileged man after a few hours. I mean in all seriousness they must be surely repeating alot of stuff.

Thankfully I stopped paying for a TV licence and watching TV a while ago.

Youngatheart00 · 10/04/2021 11:45

It’s not even 24 hours since his death was announced. There are other channels, both radio and TV, not to mention streaming services, playing other things.

YANBU to not want to watch continuous coverage, but YABU to complain about it.

With a senior royal this is to be expected, we should all show some respect

ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2021 11:48

Maybe Charles will change it when he is King, and then everyone will complain they will miss out on an extra Bank Holiday
