Is there another whole day of special programmes and mournful music?

@Nith

I usually have Classic FM on when WFH. I must say, I rather enjoyed it yesterday when there were no adverts and the very briefest of announcements between pieces of music.
Me too, although it got a bit grating when Anne-Marie kept saying in hushed tones 'if you've just joined us, HRH Prince Philip' has died'. By 4pm, I doubt anyone could have been unaware of this whether they'd been listening to Classic FM or not.
Nitgel · 10/04/2021 09:29

All the bbc radio stations had the same programme on and I had to switch to virgin and listen to bloody phil Collins.

BrumBoo · 10/04/2021 09:29

@Iamthewombat

They have, thankfully, removed the black banner from CBeebies this morning.

Tell me that this is a joke and that little kids have not been co-opted into royal grief nonsense.

Every time we tuned into Cbeebies yesterday it was there, all sodding day. Utterly ridiculous.

Today does look back to normal. Hopefully Pointless Celebs is still on later, had quite enough Grief TV.

@Iamthewombat

What’s it going to be like when QE2 pops her clogs?
The BBC apparently aren't allowed to broadcast any comedy for a week after her passing.. Confused

I think it's going to be sombre mourning music and non stop back to back programs then.. and maybe RHS gardens will close for a week..

There are over 70 freeview channels available in the UK, even if you don’t have a paid streaming service such as Netflix.
The BBC, as the national broadcaster, was bound to mark the passing of the Queen’s consort. If you don’t like it, vote with your remote.
Personally, I think it was excellent to see a programme about a male role model and war hero who gave up a promising naval career to play second fiddle to his high profile wife.

Grace58 · 10/04/2021 09:40

The CBeebies banner was annoying, we explained it to DD, and every time it popped up she asked us to check to see if someone else had died!

I think the public mood towards this has been quite misjudged by broadcasters!!

There was a thread about this yesterday, probably more than one in fact, and I was quite surprised at how much TV is a thing for so many people

I suppose I didn't realise how many people only watch the main 3 terrestrial channels in 2021

PaquitaVariation · 10/04/2021 09:46

According to the bbc schedules it looks like things are back to normal on all the channels except for Bbc1 this morning, and that’s back to usual programming this afternoon. So no, not all day.

ImaHogg · 10/04/2021 09:47

Normally, I have the radio playing in the background all day but have had to resort to rummaging through my old cd’s as every radio channel I’ve tried has such miserable music playing, it’s making me feel so low.

HunkyPunk · 10/04/2021 09:50

I do wonder about the BBC, sometimes. I fully understand the gravity of the Duke's passing, both to his family and in the context of British history, but identical schedules on BBC 1 and 2 yesterday, and BBC4 was off air! Why?

Womencanlift · 10/04/2021 09:59

It is pretty easy to ignore if you want to. Playlists on BBC Sounds to replace the radio and Streaming services to replace tv.

Apart from about 30 minutes of itv last night I didn’t watch or listen to anymore, not because I am not interested or being disrespectful it was just that by the time I finished work and got myself sorted Gogglebox was coming on so watched that instead

HeddaGarbled · 10/04/2021 10:05

It was a national experiment to find out whether TV really is the opiate of the masses.

ReviewingTheSituation · 10/04/2021 10:08

I was off sick with salmonella poisoning the week Princess Diana died. Only the 4 (or 5?) channels at my disposal, and couldn't leave the house. The schedule may have nominally returned to something 'normal' after a day or so, but in reality most things seemed to be royal/Diana related, and all very sombre. Couldn't have picked a worse time to be ill!

ReviewingTheSituation · 10/04/2021 10:09

Not much in the way of internet as a distraction either - in fact we may not have even had the internet at home, and certainly not broadband.

Cadent · 10/04/2021 10:10

This is way overkill, for what is essentially very old people who have lived a very good life, dying of very natural causes.

Rosieposy89 · 10/04/2021 10:13

It's completely OTT and poor taste considering 150,000 have died in the pandemic and the media barely mention it. It's sad for the queen but we shouldn't be expected to mourn as well.

Agree. It disgusts me too, and no, that is not too strong a word.

Raising kids to bow and scrape to their supposed social 'superiors' is against every principle and standard I hold dear.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 10/04/2021 10:14

If they postpone Line of Duty I’m rioting.

TotorosFurryBehind · 10/04/2021 10:15

Reading this makes me glad we only have Netflix and Prime. This kind of thing is the reason we got rid of our terrestrial TV and don't have a TV licence.

I don't think anyone is expected to mourn. Having a few hours of programmes about the DofE is hardly state enforced mourning.
FourWordsImMuNiTy · 10/04/2021 10:20

However the schedules on BBC iPlayer all look fine actually. 4 hours of D of E on BBC1 now but after that back to sport, Pointless, BAFTAs, new quiz thingy, and Top of the Pops reruns on BBC4. And Line of Duty episode 4 tomorrow evening.

I thought pulling BBC4 last night was definitely a step too far. How difficult would it have been to put on an old Slow TV with 4 hours of a barge going down the Grand Union Canal to soothing music.

Cornettoninja · 10/04/2021 10:21

@Toottootdrivers

That was an accidental YABU vote. YANBU
FYI you can change your vote. I’m not sure if there’s a time limit on it though
Thatwentbadly · 10/04/2021 10:22

@PurBal

I believe it's day after the funeral. Yesterday is D-day. Today is D+1. All being well the funeral should be on D+7. So next Saturday. Depends on how closely they follow the plan given COVID-19.
Surely they will run out of things to say about him by day 7!
